The Java/sup TM/ Platform has brought a simple, powerful object oriented language and set of libraries to a large developer community. It has delivered on its promise to bring increased productivity, \"write once run anywhere\", security, and dynamically downloadable code to desktop and workstation environments. Java technologies are now being extended into embedded devices. These devices often require software that exhibits real time characteristics. Java language semantics are not specified tightly enough for such software, and certain API extensions are required. Supervisory tools are very useful in the context of real-time industrial automation systems. Recent researches prove that the use of object-orientation paradigm in the development of these systems tend to produce better-structured and more reusable programs. This paper analyses, using case studies, some of the widely used commercial tools for modeling and supervisory control generation. After that, some case studies using the analyzed tools are reported and finally a proposal of an integrated object-oriented environment for application development and monitoring is made. A naming system allows users and programs to assign symbolic names to objects, and subsequently use the names to refer to those objects. With the interconnection and sharing of computer resources in the distributed environment, the application/system domain over which naming systems must function is growing to encompass a wider area. This paper describes the motivations and the main features of ADDNS-A framework for the construction of the ADlets Distributed Naming Service (ADDNS). Adlet system is a new approach for the multimedia information retrieval and fusion based on the concept of active documents advertising, whereby an Adlet (the metadata of a document) travels in the network to seek out documents of interest to the parent document, and at the same time advertises its parent document to other interested Adlets. ADDNS provides the clients with a notion of an Adlet that hides the details of how and where an object is actually located in the network. ADDNS supports location independency, transparent migration, and replication transparency of Adlets in the system. The paper also describes the inter-object communication and the invocation mechanism used in the ADDNS. The ADDNS system is featured with a dynamic data structure that expends or shrinks according to the scale of the system component. Our TAFT (Time-Aware, Fault-Tolerant) scheduling approach especially addresses the realization of this important property for future real-time applications. The main idea is to trade timeliness of tasks to be executed for maximum functionality. TAFT scheduling uses the concept of the expected case execution time (ECET) of a task in order to achieve adaptivity. We describe the design and the implementation of an integrated on-line monitoring and execution time prediction infrastructure that is able to compute the ECETs efficiently during run-time. We explain how object-orientation can be utilized to achieve more fine-grained, and thus often more precise execution time predictions and we exhibit performance figures, that prove the viability of the approach.","PeriodicalId":302179,"journal":{"name":"1999 Proceedings. In order to evaluate the fault-tolerance capability of k-coterie-based methods, the notion of (k, /spl tau/) availability has been proposed as a generic measure. However, the applicability of the only existing evaluation method is limited to systems such that the nodes are fully connected by completely reliable links. To overcome the limitation, we propose a new method that can evaluate the (k, /spl tau/)-availability of k-coteries in general topology networks with unreliable nodes and links. The proposed method uses a new notion called minimal quorum spanning forests to perform evaluation effectively. Using the method, we find that the k-majority coterie, which is optimal when the network is completely reliable, is not necessarily optimal if the links can fail and/or the system has a topology other than a complete graph.","PeriodicalId":302179,"journal":{"name":"1999 Proceedings. The importance of this relies on the fact that this formalization can be used as a guide to a mapping from projects to transition systems based model-checkers. Since model-checking is a technique based on finite transition systems, this approach, currently, can only be applied to applications that do not modify dynamically the amount of interacting objects. Hence, the applicability of the pattern is limited to statically configurable systems. The pattern, namely MULTI-AUTOMATA, is presented through a variation of the GoF form. A high-level specification language used to instantiate the pattern is also presented. However, the current CORBA standard, version 2.3, provides neither interfaces to manage resources for real time response, nor interfaces to manage the redundant object entities required for a highly reliable, fault tolerant application. The paper describes the design and implementation of an Object Request Broker (ORB), compliant with the OMG standard, that includes extensions to support both real time response and entity redundancy capabilities in the context of the CORBA standard. These components may extend the useful lifetime of a legacy system by making a subset of its data and functionality available to new applications, including intranets and extranets. However, the availability of the legacy systems often does not meet the requirements of these new applications. This paper presents a strategy for migration to enterprise components that improves the effective availability of legacy functionality and data by storing component data in native, object form. It proposes the use of persistence services embedded in the component execution environment to store persistent enterprise data.
