This paper explores a way by which this may be achieved, namely, the recommendation of services to the end-user at an opportune time. Presented is an architecture for the recommendation of services. A possible deployment with a mobile operator and mobile is presented. Supporting artifacts for an implementation including the collection of context and delivery of recommendations are presented. We present several characteristics of a large scale P2P video multicast system of over 120,000 users. Our findings highlight several network provisioning issues that accentuate the difference between P2P video multicast and traditional IP multicast from a quality-of-service perspective. Further, our results also indicate that P2P video multicast suffers from slow channel tune-in times, further differentiating the service quality of P2P video multicast and QoS-enabled IP multicast. In addition, we illustrate how commercial grade P2P video multicast may require additional bandwidth resources through bandwidth augmenting server-farms, a result that counters the common perception that commercial P2P video multicast is a completely free content distribution platform. These feature servers have begun to be deployed as IMS Application Servers to support both in-house (premises based) or hosted service (IP Centrex) offerings. At the same time, there exist applications that are external to IMS that can provide a richer communications experience, when integrated. The application layer in IMS allows these external applications to be blended with the advanced telephony features. An example of this is the use of Microsoft Office Communicator for call control. Several current implementations integrate this feature through a back-end proprietary interface to specific feature servers. The SIP protocol defines several types of request messages for its operation. A call setup, for instance, involves SIP INVITE request, which often generates message exchanges across multiple SIP proxies before the call is established. While requests such as INVITE are initiated by end users (referred herein as user-triggered requests), other SIP requests are system-triggered, wherein the user equipment (UE) automatically generates certain SIP requests for addressing and other housekeeping purposes. In particular, the SIP REGISTER requests are required to allow the UEs to register themselves with designated SIP registrar servers. Also, UEs are required to refresh their registrations by means of fresh REGISTER requests, at regular intervals. Consequently, a SIP server can experience a significant amount of load, even if the user call rates are low. In this paper, we suggest that the performance of SIP based systems can be improved by differentiated handling of the user-triggered and system-triggered requests. For instance, since the user-triggered requests have more direct impact on response time experienced by end users, these type of requests can scheduled with a higher priorities on the server. Moreover, the system-triggered requests can be delayed or even curtailed, in order to ldquosmoothenrdquo the request arrival rates at the server. We also attempt to quantify the impact of user-triggered and system-triggered requests, on the performance of an IMS system. In particular, we compute the performance of IMS by means of simulations, driven by real-world traffic statistics. We further propose and analyze a simple heuristic algorithm for controlling the rate of generation of REGISTER requests. Polices are set of rules which regulate the usage of critical resources thereby enforcing QOS and security. The overall architecture of IPTV involves multiple transport capabilities and network aspects at the lower layers and infinite possibilities of primary and supplementary services at the application layer. The very thought of monitoring, controlling and billing the usage of resources throws open a Pandora box of problems of coordination and control. Added to this are facts of maintaining QOS and network performance aspects as defined in the SLA of the providers. QOS is Ubiquitous in IMS. Charging domains are created keeping in mind the content provider, portal operator, service provider, network operator & infrastructure provider. A central resource monitor, operating accordingly to the applied polices, facilitates the charging domain to get a common bill for all the services used in various IMS entities. This keeps both the customer and operators at multilevel, informed and content. Enabling end to end QOS and providing usage based charging are the 2 primary topics addressed in this paper. IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) techniques are one of the strong contenders to solve the above problems by proposing overlay network architecture. It is imperative to find out an optimum network design to support rapidly increasing users efficiently, for signaling and services. Our present work addresses the issues involved in predicting the performance (end-to-end node delay) for signaling in the IMS network. We have implemented IMS-signaling prototype test bed and also did the simulation of the same model. Moreover, we have introduced in this case a rule engine to dynamically alter the call flow direction through different network nodes, to effectively study the performance of the various nodes. Our observed results from the implementation and simulation are close. Almost all major service providers are strategizing and planning roll out of IMS compliant network and value added services, to provide rich user experience. Moving to the hyper connected world, users have to manage multiple identities, corresponding to each connection, spread across multiple networks. Multimedia services are envisioned to be delivered seamlessly across the multiple devices of the same user. Current implementations around Presence agent aggregating presence information have limitations due to user identities spreading across multiple access devices. This limited the power of rich presence and mostly application tends to use presence aggregation around enterprise applications like email, calendars and Instant Messengers. With the advent of IMS technology, we can foresee a world exploring the benefits of presence from different networks, with presence being aggregated at the network rather than presence agents. IMS architecture eases the aggregation of presence from multiple sources and technologies. The access agnostic IMS architecture also promises one unified identity for a user spread across multiple devices and media types and thus making communication user centric. This paper details how IMS architecture can be envisioned to provide network based presence aggregation and demonstrates how the presence aggregation can be used to implement complex new services. The ECOMPS is built based on the approach presented in (Kolberg and Magill, 2007) which manages the feature interaction between call control services within a single session; therefore, the good characters are inherited. The ECOMPS introduces a cocoon surrounding the centralized multi-party service, called COMPS, to modify the original SIP request message to include the information about participants in the multi-party service; in addition, the cocoon for call control services in (Kolberg and Magill) is extended, called COCCS, to describe the servicepsilas execution on the modified request message. Moreover, the ECOMPS can be applied to the service capability interaction manager (SCIM) in 3GPP IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) to detect the feature interaction between SIP application servers where call control services are deployed on, even with the centralized multi-party service involved in the communication. The ECOMPS is also illustrated by taking the multi-party conferencing service as an example. Telecom service providers have great expectations from these new networks, helping them to reduce their costs, to extend their reach (with the ability to offer services across multiple access networks to a wide range of personal devices) and to respond more quickly to ever-changing requirements from consumers and enterprise customers. Indeed, these customers are expecting more and more blended lifestyle services including multimedia and interactive services. But, even if network technologies are evolving, the biggest barrier to increased service adoption is still that the user experience does not meet consumer expectations. Then, this paper describes work being undertaken within HP OpenCall Software group and explores strong new user experiences and business models and their associated benefits, technical challenges and implementation choices. This work is based on our experience from using standard IT services in collaboration with the IMS technology in different areas to implement the instant group communication class of applications. Many of the large service providers are deploying networks and delivery infrastructure to deliver IPTV and VoD on IP based networks. At the same time, they are looking at the possibility of migrating their traditional PSTN networks towards IMS. Given that the two events happening almost at the same time, service providers will need to consider the possibility that IPTV+VoD services could be delivered over IMS network to prevent IPTV+VoD as another service capability of an IMS network. This paper proposes an architecture for deploying IPTV & VoD as services on an IMS based network.
