Today, visitors of web sites are generally heterogeneous and have different needs, and this is likely to increase in the future. The aim of the AVANTI project is to cater hypermedia information to these individual needs by adapting the content and the presentation of web pages to each individual user. The special needs of elderly and disabled users are also partly considered. A model of the characteristics of user groups, individual users and usage environments, and a domain model are exploited in the adaptation process. One aim of this research is to verify that adaptation and user modeling techniques that were hitherto mostly used for catering interactive software systems to able-bodied users also prove useful for adaptation to users with special needs. This paper presents a Generic Advice System Architecture (GASA) to assist in developing such systems. It describes how the architecture was used in developing the SPIRE system, whose aim is to provide advice and information which will assist the integration of students with disabilities into higher education. The paper discusses the way in which the GASA addresses key issues in the development of hypermedia advice systems including the need to make such systems available to users with little training and limited knowledge of the domain; the requirement to support diverse information exploration strategies; the provision of purely ‘point and select access; ’ and the minimisation of user disorientation and cognitive overhead.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. While we now enjoy the possibilities of totally new levels of dissemination of cultural knowledge (including contemporary culture), the greatest barriers to investment and publication in interactive multimedia are the varied and often conflicting concerns of interested parties about ability to both protect and reasonably exploit intellectual property, world-wide. This paper briefly outlines the framework of IPR, explores some of the principal factors relating to current concerns, practice, standards and guidelines, particularly in relation to museums and the visual arts. Any detailed consideration of other aspects of culture (e.g. Libraries, Music, Cinema or Television) would raise further (and sometimes conflict...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. At the same time, significant limitations in many current Web-based applications demonstrate the need for new research. The history of hypermedia usability research predating the WWW and the relatively new area of research in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems (AHS) offer promising possibilities for enhancing this new medium. The problem is to design an AHS which (1) provides the integration of information from heterogeneous sources into a unified interface, (2) provides a filtering mechanism so that users see and interact with a view that is customized to their needs, (3) delivers this information through a Web interface, and (4) supports the automatic creation and validation of links between related items to help with ongoing maintenance of the application. We present a design to address this problem which makes use of object-oriented methods, information retrieval...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. In this paper we consider the role of descriptive process modeling in understanding and subsequently improving the hypermedia development process. We will look at problems with existing hypermedia development processes and the role which design tools, methods and models can play. We then go on to consider how descriptive process modeling can be used to model hypermedia development processes and subsequently identify potential flaws within these processes. We propose a hypermedia development process reference model, and an associated modeling and process assessment method that provides the mechanisms necessary for measuring and improving hypermedia development. We provide some examples that demonstrate the validity of the approach. The result is a technique which is...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. We propose a meta-experimental framework where research is carried out through a dynamic interaction between what and why questions, and between confirmatory and exploratory analyses. This approach preserves many of the advantages of formal experimentation, while permitting a more holistic examination of phenomena that is characteristic of ethnography. The application of the meta-theoretical framework is illustrated in three case studies that examined new information exploration functionalities and interfaces and their relationship to expertise and exploration strategy","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. Test users were studied during their interaction with three versions of the SPEAK! system. Two versions offered active help, either in the form of spoken or written output, whereas a control version provided standard passive help texts only. The study was explorative in nature and mainly relied on qualitative data analyses. In order to evaluate the dialogue guidance/active help approach and the influence of the output modes, evaluation criteria focused on usability and subjective satisfaction of users with the interaction. The study was designed to be open for the exploration of typical usage patterns and the users own evaluation criteria. Data from the observations, users*think-aloud comments, and an open-ended questionnaire were combined and further qualified by differential analyses considering ...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. We examine the issues of scalability encountered in supporting open hypermedia in a large-scale software development environment. The World Wide Web is discussed as an alternative approach to supporting relationship management in these environments and we identify reasons why open hypermedia is a superior approach. We also report on a research project where the Chimera open hypermedia system was used to support the relationship management needs of an industrial-scale development project of an aerospace organization. The results of this project supply insights to developers about the implications of supporting data scalability in open hypermedia systems. We conclude by evaluating the level of scalability achieved by our efforts and describe our future plans with respect to supporting additional orders of magnitude.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. It is concerned with the design, installation, operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical systems in buildings. Design software developed for the bse industry is typically structured on sets of well-established rules and building codes. Anecdotal evidence indicates that junior designers, who may lack experience and confidence, frequently adopt a ‘black box’ approach when applying design software. This may be contrasted with the more experienced designer who typically questions the assumptions and algorithms adopted before applying the programs. However, this is not always possible even for the experienced designer, particularly where ‘conventional’ computer-languages have been used to develop die software. It is therefore argued within the paper that for some applications design software based on hypermedia may be more appropriate. This is demonstrated through the development of a protot...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev.
