The walkthrough is founded upon an analysis of the cognitive processes and representations formed by the comprehension of an MM presentation. Issues include evaluation of attention, topic focus and information types. The walkthrough provides a series of guidelines for evaluation based on these cognitive models, such as the use of media, scripting and presentation techniques. The value of the guidelines is validated by several empirical studies. An eye tracking study is reported, providing evidence as to how visual attention responds to MM materials. A series of comprehension studies then investigate the effectiveness of a presentation before and after our guidelines were applied. The paper is illustrated with an example evaluation and studies of a commercially produced CD-ROM MM presentation ‘The Biology of Cancer’.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. Typical data include textual catalogue cards manageable through an information retrieval system (IRS), as well as textual captions, images, video, and speech, organizable as a hypermedia network. In this paper we propose a model for the design of these applications, and discuss its effectiveness in improving the quality of the application. The model exploits a multi-level design approach to organize data and access structures of the IRS, while the Entity-Relationship (E-R) approach, tailored to model hypermedia applications, is adopted to describe the structure of the documents and their links.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. However, authoring enviroments to date have had little impact in the real‐world production of text. One possible reason is our poor conceptualisation of current writing practice. In the present paper, 31 adult writers kept diaries of their writing activities over the course of one week. The results indicate that for most pople, real world writing is a short communicative act aimed at a limited audience and that technological support for such writing is less likely to resemble a hypermedia workstation than a portable personal communication device. Implications for work in the design of authoring tools are developed.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. This paper describes a case study aimed at validating empirically metrics proposed to measure the development effort involved in authoring a hypermedia application. The case study is one of the empirical evaluations that we have conducted and it has been planned according to a scientific method of research. Our objective is to improve hypermedia authoring by measuring some quality characteristics of hypermedia applications and the processes involved in developing hypermedia applications. The metrics proposed here adhere to the representational theory of measurement and all the measurement activities have been developed according to Fenton and Pfleeger's Conceptual Framework for Software Measurement and the guidelines from the DESMET project. The theoretical validation of the metrics proposed is also described. Results have shown that several...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. ARIANNA employs two knowledge sources (a decision tree and a taxonomy of concepts in the clinical domain) and schema and ATN-based NLG techniques, to dynamically generate the hypermedia. This appears to the user as a frameset with three main components: the guideline itself, an explanation of related concepts and a justification of individual steps. Each component is adapted to the user: i) the guideline is adapted to the user's goal in consulting the system (tutoring vs decision support); ii) explanations of concepts are adapted to the user knowledge and to the interaction history; iii) justifications are reserved for the tutoring consultation mode.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. The proposed model consists of an expert system with a hypermedia user interface module and hypermedia output explanation module. An implementation based on the proposed model, an expert system named the Tourist Hyper-Expert Consultant (THECO) is described. The results showed that the proposed model and structure, which employ hypermedia features, can enhance the user interface and output explanation modules of expert systems. Incorporating hypermedia into the user interface module enhances the flexibility of the expert system application in acquiring inputs from the users. Hypermedia also improved the ability of the output explanation module to give more comprehensive recommendations","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. In this paper we describe an approach we have developed to semi-automatically generate a hypertext from linear texts. This is based on initially creating nodes and composite nodes composed of ‘mini-hypertexts’. Following this we then compute node-node similarity values using standard information retrieval techniques. These similarity measures are then used to selectively create node-node links based on the strength of similarity between nodes. What makes our process novel is that the link creation process also uses values from a dynamically computed metric which measures the topological compactness of the overall hypertext being generated. Thus link creation is a selective process based not only on node-node similarity but also on the overall layout of the hypertext. Experiments on generating a hypertext from a ...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. While this development has resulted in increased openness and flexibility, integration or adaptation of various different tools (such as content editors, viewers, services, or even other link servers) has remained a tedious task. Many developers were implementing essentially similar components, simply for the benefit of having their own platform on which to experiment with hypertexts. The open hypermedia community is addressing this issue of interoperability between open hypermedia systems. The goal of this effort is to provide an open framework that can be used by application developers outside the community to construct more powerful hypermedia-aware applications. The design and evolution of this framework is presented along with the requirements that drove its development. The framework has matured to the point where it has supported the creation of a number of researc...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev.
