The proposed technique is a specialisation for hypermedia of a general methodology for usability evaluation of interactive systems, named SUE -Systematic Usability Evaluation. Our approach aims to support a systematic evaluation process, making it well organised, fast and cheap, and is based on the use of a hypermedia model, a set of hypermedia-specific usability attributes, and a set of patterns of inspection activities, called abstract tasks. The model identifies the ‘dimensions’ along which hypermedia usability can be analysed, defines the application constituents that must be inspected, and allows a precise formulation of usability attributes and abstract tasks. Abstract tasks provide operational guidelines for systematically checking usability attributes throughout the application. To exemplify our approach, we will report som...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. This prescriptive and descriptive approach might be useful to evaluate and compare quality characteristics and attributes in different phases of a Web product lifecycle. Particularly, to discuss this methodology, we evaluate the level of accomplishment of required quality characteristics (like usability, functionality, reliability, efficiency, and derived subcharacteristics) in six typical academic sites. At the end of the evaluation process, a ranking for each selected site is obtained. Specifically, the evaluation process generates elemental, partial, and global indicators or quality preferences that can be easily analyzed, backward and forward traced, justified, and efficiently employed in decision-making activities. Hence, conclusions about the state-of-the-art of the quality in the operative phase of these sites can be drawn. In addition, recommendation...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. The primary reason that audio has not attracted as much attention as other media can be attributed to its obvious lack of visual identity. The main focus of this work was to identify a generic and meaningful visual representation of audio within a hypermedia context, and significantly promote hypermedia support for audio through the provision of a sound viewer. This paper describes the inherent difficulties in providing a consistent interface to audio, and discusses in some depth the issues raised during the development process. The sound viewer is then introduced and the associated concepts described. The creation and traversal of links to and from audio are facilitated by the sound viewer across formats including WAV (proprietary digital sound file format from Microsoft), CD (Compact Disc) Audio and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). The resultant viewer provides a unified and extensible framework for interacting with audio from within an open hypermedia environment. The open hypermedia system Microcosm was used as the development platform for this work. Microcosm can be augmented to supply a hypermedia link service to additional media with minimal overhead.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. This method, integrating different approaches for describing colour information, can be more satisfactory than standard techniques in fields such as textiles, ceramics, and paintings, when the user would like to retrieve from the database those images that actually resemble the query image selected in their colour distribution characteristics. Experimental trials on a database of complex antique textile images are reported and compared with human perceptual judgments, using an innovative procedure for estimating retrieval effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. The major problem for users is to find their way in this heterogeneous hyperspace and to quickly access the information they need, the major opportunity is the connectivity and interactivity between a substantial population and a considerable amount of resources and knowledge. In this paper we present, through an example application, a novel way of supporting the user of a WWW application. The approach is novel in that we generate a context-sensitive meta-text to serve as a navigation guide for an existing application (rather than to make the application itself user adaptive) and that we use a very dynamic user model, trying to capture the user's minute-to-minute evolving context. We finally discuss how the foundations of this approach fit into a radically new way of sup...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. The underlying semantic space of the user interface consists of a collection of papers from the three most recent ACM SIGCHI conference proceedings, visualised as a virtual reality network. This network was automatically constructed based on semantic similarities derived from latent semantic analysis. We studied die search strategies and general preferences of eleven subjects who used this system to find papers on various topics. The study has led to a number of interesting findings, which should be valuable for designers and evaluators of 3D user interfaces. The results highlight the importance of structural elements in the design of a semantically based user interface, because search strategies of users relied heavily on these mechanisms in the design. The results of this study also demonstrate that...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. Retrieval tasks occur along a spectrum starting with the Data Pole, which involves retrieval of images for the information which the images include, and ending with the Objects Pole, which concerns the retrieval of images as objects. Each Pole generates a certain searching behaviour which has characteristics opposing those of the other Pole. These characteristics suggest that: (a) Relevance feedback may not be useful for tasks on the Objects Pole; (b) Measuring precision on the Data Pole should be replaced with another measurement of effort and time, while on the Objects Pole, the quality of browsing sets and the precision of the browsing process should be measured instead of precision; and (c) Recall is not useful for the Data Pole, and requires much exploration before it can be adopted for the Object Pole. Since the mid-1980s bibliographic descriptions of all the Archive's 5000 plus datasets have been available to users of the JANET and the Internet via the Archive's BIRON (Bibliographic Information Retrieval Online) System. Data are provided on a variety of electronic media and by networked transfer, according to the wishes and resources of the end user. Documentation, that is, the full texts of questions asked, the contextual background to the studies and the technical details needed to read the electronic data, have normally been supplied on paper and by post. The Archive is now seeking to extend the bibliographic information on BIRON to the full texts of the documentation held. Because of the efforts involved in manually creating links, the hyperbases created using these systems are seldom modified even when they were found not to fully support the requirements of the intended users. This paper studies the development of automated tools to aid in the process of link creation, browsing, and link refinement. Only relation links are considered in this study. The automated tools are developed to help in three of the major stages of developing and using hypertext applications: (a) during authoring to generate a set of relation links between pairs of nodes; (b) during browsing to recommend an optimal set of starting nodes for the users to begin browsing, and to guide the users at each stage of browsing by suggesting a set of “next” nodes to traverse; and, (c) during training to modify, remove and add link...","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev. The system applies link weights to the hyperlinks in the networks and updates these link weights according to three learning rules. The learning rules are based on how often a particular hyperlink is being traversed and operate on strictly local information of link traversals. Changes in network structure are fed back to users by dynamic link ordering according to descending link weight. The system has been shown to be able to structure random hypertext networks into valid representations of their users' browsing preferences in two WWW experiments and a simulation using a mathematical model of user navigation.","PeriodicalId":301199,"journal":{"name":"New Rev.
