The targets were both transmissive and reflective and good results were obtained for both types of targets. Figure 1 is a sketch of a typical experimental set up for a reflective target. A motorized precision rotatable mount held the target so motion was possible. The half waveplate in the local oscillator arm rotated this field's plane of polarization by 90° so only the field components in the plane of the page would interfere also the polarizer before the detector selected this state of polarization. Both the frequencies of the L0 and signal beams were shifted by acousto-optic modulators. A 64×64 element array of the camera was used to record the intensity pattern. The target was moved using a stepping motor so at each sampling interval the target was at rest and the data at each element of the camera was sampled 10 times so the intermediate frequency waveform was recovered. In a given sampling period at least 10 or more different samplings were taken. This number is small but was limited by the camera and electronics. The camera frame speed was slow which restricted the intermediate frequency of the heterodyne signal to be no higher than 10 Hz.","PeriodicalId":300704,"journal":{"name":"Signal Recovery and Synthesis IV","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129122567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this approach the Fredholm equation of the first kind which describes the imaging system is solved by finding its singular-value spectrum and its \"object\" and \"image\" singular functions. These functions provide complete orthonormal basis sets for the description of object and image which have the desirable feature of minimum \"representational entropy\". The inversion is performed by finding the coefficients of the singular function expansion up to an index determined by the level of noise in the image and the singular value spectrum. We have recently described an all optical technique to perform these operations which involves designing an optical mask to place in the image plane of the system (apodisation in the pupil plane is not suitable for incoherent light imaging). The mask function for five terms in the series is shown in Fig 1 [3]. The transfer function for this mask is shown by the heavy line in Fig 3.","PeriodicalId":300704,"journal":{"name":"Signal Recovery and Synthesis IV","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127683917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, intrinsic to the nature of these inverse problems is their potential for ill-posedness. We review our experience in overcoming ill-posedness of inverse scattering problems and some of the theoretical and practical results we have achieved in our pursuit of numerically efficient and robust algorithms, i.e. fast algorithms that also mediate the ill-posed nature of some inverse problems. This is commensurate with the stated goal of the Center for Inverse Problems, Imaging, and Tomography, which is the development of imaging algorithms that produce quantitative maps of material parameters. The incident (electromagnetic or acoustic) energy is diffracting in the cases we study, so that standard Computed Tomographic (CT) algorithms are inadequate for the kind of resolution required for quantitative maps. The need to solve the wave equation exactly, dramatically increases the complexity of the inversion problem.","PeriodicalId":300704,"journal":{"name":"Signal Recovery and Synthesis IV","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117020779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of an x-ray crystallography experiment is to determine the position in three dimensional space of each atom in a molecule. The measured data are the magnitudes squared of the Fourier transform of the electron density function of a crystal of the molecule of interest and possibly also of chemical derivatives. The data reduction calculations are a signal reconstruction problem for the three dimensional electron density. In the so-called “direct” methods of interest here, the reconstruction is based on a noisy measurement of the magnitude squared of the Fourier transform of the electron density of a single crystal, that is, no chemical derivatives of the molecule are studied.","PeriodicalId":300704,"journal":{"name":"Signal Recovery and Synthesis IV","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116612454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The object of the measurement is to determine parameters defining the state of a physical system characterized by a set of parameters {αi} on the basis of an observed set of photoncount numbers {nj}. Two types of parameters are involved: those that are to be determined, {αi}p (primary), and those that have impact on the estimation but are otherwise of no interest to the object of the measurement, {αi}s (secondary).
