We demonstrate that input-output representations, i.e. transfer functions, contain no internal structural information of the system. We further show that neither the additional knowledge of system order nor minimality of the true realization is generally sufficient to characterize network structure. We then introduce dynamical structure functions as an alternative, graphical-model based representation of LTI systems that contain both dynamical and structural information of the system. The main result uses dynamical structure to precisely characterize the additional information required to obtain network structure from the transfer function of the system.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127215787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The uniqueness of the method is that it not only tackles regular points on such boundaries, but it also equally applies to singular points, which can be otherwise restrictive to treat by any other method known to the authors. The applicability of the approach without being limited to the dimension of the dynamics, the number of independent time delays and uncertain parameters is seen advantageous. Some example cases are provided to demonstrate the developed results.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117308221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main contribution lies in the use of a new structure of the proposed observer. Thanks to this new design, a new nonrestrictive synthesis condition, expressed in term of linear matrix inequality (LMI), is obtained. Indeed, the obtained LMI contains more degree of freedom than those established by the approaches available in the literature which consider a simple Luenberger observer. An extension of the presented result to Hinfin performance analysis is given in order to take into account the noise (if it exists) affecting the considered system.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121629902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sufficient conditions of global convergence of the observer are proposed. The proposed observer design method is applied to estimate the states of a real continuous non-linear system with hysteresis. First, the non-linearities are divided in linear sub-models, second the system is discretized to give finally a discrete time linear switched model on which the proposed observer is applied. Simulation results are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed observer.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131628600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We design feedback controllers so that an equilibrium with arbitrary prescribed species concentrations becomes globally asymptotically stable. The novelty of our work is that we assume that only a linear combination of the species concentrations is available for measurement, combined with our use of Lyapunov function methods to generate stable coexistence and quantify the effects of disturbances. Our closed-loop error dynamics are integral input-to-state stable with respect to small perturbations of the controllers. Hence, no matter what initial positive levels for the species concentrations and substrate are selected, the long term species and substrate levels remain close to the equilibrium, even when there are small unexpected changes in the dilution rate and input nutrient concentration. This is a highly desirable robustness property, because the dilution rate is prone to actuator errors. We illustrate our approach using a numerical example.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"76 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120820181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach does not need to use any reference signal. A phase-locked loop is added to the control law in order to achieve synchronization between the two parts of the circuit, which is necessary to obtain the desired output voltage. The ILC algorithm iteratively updates the reference trajectory for the robot such that the predicted tracking error in the next iteration is minimised. The tracking error is predicted by a model of the closed-loop dynamics of the robot. The model includes the servo resonance frequency, the first resonance frequency caused by elasticity in the mechanism and the variation of both frequencies along the trajectory. Experimental results show that the tracking error of the robot can be reduced, even at frequencies beyond the first elastic resonance frequency.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114432722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is posed as a PDE constrained optimization problem with data of the problem given by the measured input and output variables at the boundary of the domain. By using the governing equations in the frequency domain, a spatially dependent transfer matrix relating the input variables to the output variables is obtained. It is shown that by considering a finite number of dominant oscillatory modes of the input, an accurate representation of the output can be obtained. This converts the original PDE constrained optimization problem to one without any constraints. The optimal parameters can be identified using standard nonlinear programming. The utility of the proposed approach is illustrated by considering a river reach in the Sacramento-San-Joaquin Delta, California, that is subjected to tidal forcing. The dynamics of the reach are modeled by linearized Saint-Venant equations. The available data is the flow variables measured upstream and downstream of the reach. The parameter identification problem is to estimate the average free-surface width, the bed slope, the friction coefficient and the steady-state boundary conditions. It is shown that the estimated model gives an accurate prediction of the flow variables at an intermediate location within the reach.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130259709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The input of the system is assumed to be non-Gaussian, whereas the noises contaminating the data are assumed to be Gaussian. The fourth-order cumulants of the input/output data are then (asymptotically) insensitive to the noises, that can be coloured and/or mutually correlated. Two estimators based on this noise-cancellation property are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms are assessed through a numerical simulation.","PeriodicalId":300509,"journal":{"name":"2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126609337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
