All kinds of worship in temples have Yagya as an essential portion. This was true even in the medieval time of India. Jageshwar Dham is a place 34 kilometers away from Almora, in the Kumaon Range of Himalaya in Uttarakhand state of India containing 125 big and small temples and 174 sculptures, dating back to circa century and having Shiva as the main deity of the temple complex. Among them, 100 temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva; the oldest of them are Jageshwar Temple and Maha-Mrityunjaya Temple. The temple complex contains Hawan Kund which is still being used by temple Brahmins. There was much of literature describing the construction time of Jageshwar Dham, however, no direct literature was available to find the specific time of the construction of Hawan Kund in the temple complex. The present study attempted to analyze Hawan Kund’s structure, construction, and ritualistic details in order to find its importance and probable time of construction. The study inferred that Scriptural, traditional, and archeological facts of Hawan Kund at Jageshwar temple indeed revealed its importance in Shiva worship and maintaining spiritual ambiance. Besides the strong utilization of Hawan Kund in temple ancient traditions and rituals, the study also found that Hawan Kund was Thirteen Hast (hand as a unit) large, where 13 is the number of Shiva worship. Also, the Ishan (north-east) direction of Hawan Kund’s position with respect to Mrityunjaya temple indicated the following of proper scriptural protocol for Shiva worship indicating well-thought construction by original builders. Thus, though there was no direct literature available to find the specific time of the construction of Hawan Kund in the temple complex, it was clear that the Hawan Kund of Jageshwar temple was associated strongly with the temple’s main deity worship. Hence, the existence of Hawan Kund had to be to that of the Jageshwar and Maha Mrityunjaya temple i.e. circa the century.","PeriodicalId":300166,"journal":{"name":"Interdisciplinary Journal of Yagya Research","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127413460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yagya- Mandap is consist of 8 parts which are Mandap base, pillars, Valliya, Ganduk, Vedi, Toran, Dhvaja and Pataka. All these parts play a significant role in Yagya as they represent a particular deity depending upon the type of yagya. There are several variations in the dimensions of all these parts which are believed to be dependent on the Purpose and type of yagya and also the availability of the sources for the construction of yagya Mandap. The Mandap is classified on the basis of category, purpose, size and number of instruments used for its constructions. Yagya Mandap plays a vital role in the procedure of Yagya and its final outcome. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the mathematical aspect of the construction of the Yagya Mandap i.e. deciding the size of Yagya Mandap, ii) preparing Mandap base, iii) placing Pillars, and iv) preparing the roof. The study summarized scriptural dimensions, types and placements of Mandap Base, pillars, roof for different sizes of Yagya Mandap. Mandap can be classified on the basis of area i.e. adham (small), madhyam (medium) and uttam (large), for upto 20 hast 16 pillars and 32 Valliya ( column creating roof structure) used for creating Mandap, where as big Yagya Mandap can be from 20 hast to 100 hast and required more number of pillars and Valliya depending upon the size of the particular yagya Mandap. Mandap must be at the height of 12 angul or 1 hast from the ground level where base is of square shape and the area varies with a number of kund. Stambh are of two sizes the inner-pillar of 8 hast and outer pillar of 5 hast. Ganduk is the top most portion of roof of Mandap and is situated at the top of the Mandap and consists of 4 valliaya. Summarily, the depth of attention for Yagya kund construction indeed stresses out the need of Yagya Mandap to be very beautiful and systematic with reasonable efforts.","PeriodicalId":300166,"journal":{"name":"Interdisciplinary Journal of Yagya Research","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122225970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously studies have shown potential of herbal fume for anti-microbial activity as well as for therapeutic purposes along with reduction in the air pollutants post Hawan. However, there was no study which had tested and compared herbal fumes of hawan in control and natural environment for air-quality, anti-bacterial activity and for presence of bio-compounds present in time-dependent manner simultaneously. This work aims to evaluate air quality of hawan and simultaneously evaluate bio-compounds present in it to find its potential for integrative medicine. This work aims to investigate its efficacy in air purification and potential application in modern integrative medicine. Methods: Chambers for performing Hawan under natural and controlled experimental conditions were constructed. Hawan was performed for 30min in a chamber. Chamber air and Hawan herbal fumes were sampled before, during (30 min) and at end (24-72 hours) to find viable bacterial load of air, chemical bio-actives (phyto-constituents), and air quality markers (gases and pollutants) by standard techniques and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis along with analysis of pyrolysed hawan herbal fumes and Hawan ingredients. OneWay ANOVA with post hoc analysis by Tukey’s test was performed for comparison of air quality parameters during different experiments. Results: Transient sharp increase in CO, CO2, NOx levels (albeit within permissible limits) observed during Hawan was followed by decrease below baseline after 24hrs of Hawan in open-door natural conditions. Statistically significant persistent reduction (88-90%) (p<0.0001) in the viable bacterial count of air compared to control was observed upto ≥72 hours after Hawan, when all pathogenic bacteria present in air were eliminated, leaving few textit{Bacillus spp.} known to be beneficial for human health. GCMS analysis of Hawan medicinal fumes and pyrolysed Hawan ingredients revealed presence of an array of bioactive compounds known to have antimicrobial, anti-oxidant, air cleansing and nutritional activity and health benefits. Conclusion: Thus, through temporal and simultaneous analysis of Hawan air quality, its anti-microbial activity and phytochemical characterization, the study provided evidence-based-support to multifaceted potential of Hawan as described in ancient literature which can be put to immense use for therapeutic utility in modern time.","PeriodicalId":300166,"journal":{"name":"Interdisciplinary Journal of Yagya Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129781880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has become necessary that a person should understand the importance of Yagya in life and include it in the method of living life; otherwise, no matter how many means one acquires, there won’t be happiness and contentment. Yagya has been a core of Indian culture and daily routine in Indian life cannot be imagined without Yagya. The glory of Yagya has been described in detail in the Vedas, Upanishads, Gita, Ramayana, Parana etc. The word Yagya is not only to offer sacrifices through mantras, but Yagya is the best scientific method of living life. What exactly is a sacrificial life? To know this it is necessary to understand the following things- What is Yagya? What is the actual form of Yagya? What is the need of Yagya? What is the importance of Yagya? In fact, Yagya is not limited to rituals, but the extension of Yagya extends to philosophy of life. If Yagya is understood in its broadest sense, then all the arts and sciences of life come under it. The broad meaning of Yagya is the form of man's life. Yagya was an integral part of the spiritual teachings and research experiments in the Gurukuls in ancient India. It was also prominent in the cultural activities and ethno practices (for the maintenance of good health, and purity and protection of the environment) in the Indian Society till the Medieval Age. Despite substantial cultural devolution and loss of original texts of wisdom in the medieval times of destructive foreign invasions, substantial information on Yagya may still be found in the Indian scriptures available today. Though in distorted form, it is also practiced as an important sacrament (as “fire-ritual”/havan) in many sections of the Indian society till date. However, the wisdom and science of Yagya is completely missing from the streams of science and education. In concordance with the noble objectives of the Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidalaya (DSVV), the “Yagyavalkya Center for Yagya Research” of this university has initiated thorough interdisciplinary research and scientific experiments on Yagya for past three years. Towards advancement and expansion of this research, the centre had organized a one-day national symposium for a brain storming session and interaction among distinguished experts and researchers in different fields of medical, biological, chemical, and mathematical sciences, and engineering/technology. The symposium was held in the DSVV campus at Haridwar on December4, 2021. Rishis gave concepts of Gayatri and Yagya to practice in daily life to refine animal instincts to divine personalities with the purpose of universal welfare. For this, one of the methods given by Rishis in Vedic time was Balivaishva Yagya. Vedic scriptures described elaborately the practice of it in daily life. The present study aimed to explore the meaning, philosophy, procedure, and utility of Balivaishva Yagya in the present time. ‘Balivaishva Dev’ Yagya is defined as a divine offering for the welfare of the universe. The five offerings of Balivaishva Yagya is represented as Panch Maha (Five Great) Yagya i.e. Brahma-Yagya, Dev-Yagya, Rishi-Yagya, Nar-Yagya, and Bhoot-Yagya. Respectively, they symbolized for 1) inspiration of the self-knowledge of Brahman, 2) progression from animal instincts to divine qualities, 3) having a compassionate life for the upliftment of the backward, 4) creation of environment and social order according to human dignity, 5) extension of intimacy to all living beings including even vegetation. Thus, practicing these five principles through Balivaishva Yagya in the family can help in obtaining harmony in the family by creating a spiritual environment. Herbal fumes can be considered similar to Yagya fumes. The purpose of this research article is to study the method, timing, symptoms, harms, benefits, and similarities of Yagya fumes with herbal fume. In Ayurveda, the fumes of herbal medicines (Dhoompana) are used for the treatment of various diseases by using different types of herbs. The medicinal properties of herbal fumes, when taken through the nostrils, directly dissolve in our blood and affect the body. Different methods of Dhoompana have been described in Ayurveda. The herbal vapor in Ayurveda treatment is called Swedana Kriya, in which the foreign elements are removed outside from the body by using various herbal vapors. Similarly, the physical health, mental health, and spiritual health benefits from Yagya fumes are also obtained. Regarding Yagya fumes, in Atharvaveda (3/11/2), it is said that even if a person's condition has become like death, his vitality has diminished, yet Yagya saves him from the mouth of death and makes him strong to live and invigorates for a hundred years. In this way, all these methods of Ayurveda should be understood from the point of view of the process of Yagya. The present paper through understanding the similarities between Yagya fumes and herbal fumes concluded that treatment of Herbal Dhoompana should be understood under Yagya Therapy.","PeriodicalId":300166,"journal":{"name":"Interdisciplinary Journal of Yagya Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129034979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Religious tourism to pilgrimage sites has existed since the dawn of time in every part of the world. People frequently went on pilgrimages despite journey inconveniences. Hence, it begs the question of the purpose of their visit and what makes their visit most efficient? The present study examined the purposes of religious tourism in the present times vs. Vedic times and proposed considerations for holistic religious tourism. For different purposes, tourists visit religious sites to obtain benefits i.e. 1) religious, 2) spiritual, 3) academic, and 4) pleasure purposes. However, this model of religious tourism is not holistic. In the Vedic model, pilgrimage sites should have religious-pious personalities and a spiritual environment for effectively guiding tourists for new resolutions in life holistic model. In addition, the pilgrimage should result in nation-building and social-cultural benefits besides building the economy. For the same purpose, spiritual practices like Yagyas and Ashwamedha were performed in Vedic times at pilgrimage sites resulting in a holistic model of religious tourism i.e. 1) pilgrimage site has Rishi like personalities, 2) tourists, locals aid in preserving natural resources, 3) culture and social upliftment resulted in nation-building. The core of keeping a holistic pilgrimage site was Yagya. Yagya is a core practice keeping Teerth alive. The Cultural campaign of Ashwamedha and live Teerth is capable of reversing the maladies that have entered public minds. The current study presents that the Ashwamedha Yagya can act as an important component of religious tourism and gives a newer dimension to religious tourism by providing holistic development of the participants at religious sites through Ashwamedha for national unity, peace, and harmony.","PeriodicalId":300166,"journal":{"name":"Interdisciplinary Journal of Yagya Research","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121440491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
