The objective of this project is to design a hyperbolic tangent activation function (TANH) for integrated circuit implementation using digital design approach. This paper compares the performances of area, speed and power between ring architecture and tree architecture of activation function using repetitive instantiation of multipliers and adders. TANH function. The project scope covers digital design using Verilog hardware description language followed by functional simulation and synthesis using Silterra 0.18 μm technology files. The activation function performed the TANH function mathematical operation with ±0.02% accuracy. It is shown that the tree architecture performs better than ring architecture with lower propagation delay. On the other hand, ring architecture achieves lower power dissipation.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133044454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In wireless sensor networks (WSN) localization algorithm, the propagation model has been used as a function of distance to estimate the range. The multipath phenomenon causes the error in estimation of the received power. Without directly use the received power value to estimate the range, we can increase the accuracy by exploiting the periodicity of the deep fade since multipath behave differently in the certain frequency range.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133775355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite several researches on WSN energy consumption, there is no clear transceiver energy consumption model to use when designing very low power WSN. By studying the energy consumption map of the transceiver of a WSN node in different states and within state transitions, we propose in this paper the energy consumption model of the transceiver unit of a typical sensor node. The contribution of this paper is an innovative energy consumption model based on finite automata which reveals the relationship between the aggregate energy consumption and power characteristics of the transceiver components.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132585312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are widely used in many areas such as editing and storing previously printed or handwritten documents. Much of research has been done regarding the identification of Latin, Japanese and Chinese characters. However, very little investigation has been performed regarding Arabic recognition. Probably the reason is limitation of IT activities in Arabic speaking countries and the difficulty and complexity of Arabic characters identification compared to the others. More difficulties are introduced from the cursive nature of Arabic text. In this paper, a technique has been employed to segment printed Arabic text in order to separate the Arabic characters and then extracting powerful features for each to be recognized. In-order to recognize characters, those features are then compared with a pre-prepared database fields. Although the database was prepared from characters written in Time New Roman font, experimental results show the relatively high accuracy of the method developed when it is tested on several sizes of several fonts beside Time New Roman font.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"164 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120867441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the study is to investigate and identify the wireless network's characteristics. Received Signal Strength from a public access point was examined and the internet connection speed through the said access point, from end user's perspective was scrutinized. Correlation of internet connection performance based on received signal strength from the access point was put under evaluation. Such notion has been evaluated and likely to be refuted based on the experimental findings. Having a high received signal strength alone does not warrant a good internet connection speed since there are likely to be other influencing factors and parameters involved. Since classifying the behavior of an access point is not always straightforward, this study confines the monitoring of IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network behaviors from the perspective of access point users.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130940227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) is depleting, the deployment of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in enterprise network is significant to ensure a continuous communication system. Unfortunately, the coexistence condition of IPv4 and IPv6 will expose enterprise network to IPv4 and IPv6 threats. This paper investigated the potential security risks that will affect the enterprise network by using threat model and measured the potential security risk in enterprise network by using IPv6 Security Risk Prototype (i-SeRP) system. Threats and vulnerabilities were identified by using threat model and i-SeRP system was developed. I-SeRP system helps network administrator to identify the security risk as well as the decision making process for security policy approach. An equation is adapted to calculate the risk value. Analysis from the risk value will assist the enterprise to identify risky assets that need to be secured. Through this study, enterprises are able to calculate the risk value easily using i-SeRP system.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123824933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Triangular slots are introduced in the three edges of the patch and a small feed line has used another edge of the patch to obtain the dual frequency. The antenna has a condensed structure where patch dimension is about 8.5×7.96×1.905 mm3 leading to good bandwidths covering 576 MHz and 540 MHz. Across the operating band in lower and higher frequency, stable average peak gain is observed. The radiation patterns are nearly omnidirectional with moderate gain in both the operating frequency. This low profile nature and simple configuration of the proposed antenna show the way to easy fabrication and make it appropriate for the application in wireless and satellite communication.","PeriodicalId":299947,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128834367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
