However, the nature of WSN makes it an unexpectedly complex task. The extremely large number of nodes, the need for an environment model, and the cross-layer dependencies of the models are some of the reasons for this complexity. Many of the existing simulation tools do not properly handle these issues. In this paper, OBIWAN, a new simulator for WSN is presented. In its design, critical issues like reusability, scalability and cross-layer dependencies have been addressed. It is further developed with several alternative types of channels. The simulation model is validated via extensive simulation scenarios regarding the WLAN performances. The proposed algorithm is applied to both the scheduling of downlink transmissions in a CDMA scenario with delay-oriented services, and real time services, although by a proper modification of the constraints imposed in the energy function, it could be easily extended to other services or access technologies. The algorithm is evaluated by means of simulations, revealing its ability to adapt to the specific service and traffic conditions. These advantages are very suitable for wireless local area networks (WLAN) and wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN). This paper focuses on the study of fixed wireless broadband access (FWBA) services in metropolitan areas, making two main contributions. First, the experimental characterization of a 2times2 MIMO channel at a frequency of 2.4 GHz in canonical outdoor-indoor scenarios is presented. The channel characterization performed includes the analysis of the spatial correlation between the MIMO system subchannels and its impact on the channel capacity. Second, on the basis of the capacity results obtained, a proposal is made for the use of a 2times2 MIMO system in outdoor-indoor scenarios for FBWA applications in metropolitan environments. The proposal is based on the hypothesis, verified experimentally, that the path loss due to building penetration can be practically compensated by the diversity gain of 2times2 systems","PeriodicalId":299928,"journal":{"name":"MELECON 2006 - 2006 IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122723236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
