But at the same time some big providers actually pay those fees while still officially in favor of neutrality. To better understand this strategical behavior, this paper proposes a simple model providing some insight on whether or not paying side payments for an incumbent provider is a way to create barriers to entry for competitors. It also investigates the economic consequences on all actors: incumbent and new entrant content providers, users, and the Internet Service Provider. We then describe how the side payment can be determined as a Nash bargaining solution.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126382864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With widely and remotely deployed M2M devices, the traditional way of changing a mobile operator by swapping SIM cards becomes problematic and expensive, or even impossible if the SIM card is soldered to the device. In order to address this problem, a standard for over-the-air subscription management called Embedded SIM has been developed. The standard is likely to bring significant, but not well understood changes to the current technical and business processes of M2M communications. Moreover, if embedded SIM is adopted in mobile handsets and tablets, this can potentially disrupt mobile operators' business. In order to better understand possible business architectures of embedded SIM, this paper analyzes alternative value network configurations (VNCs) that can emerge around the remote subscription management. The VNCs are constructed by identifying important roles, actors serving these roles, and business links between the actors. In particular, the research defines three alternative configurations driven by three different actors: a SIM card vendor, a mobile operator, and a third-party M2M connectivity provider.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134034297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently the position of ISPs is challenged by the emergence of powerful content service providers, especially with the spreading of bandwidth demanding video services. One issue here is that the further investment in the network capacity may be hindered by prevailing business models that largely exclude the ISPs from sharing in the major cash flows resulting from content provision. We develop modeling tools for evaluation of business models of ISPs and present results of analysis of two models with the potential for generation of additional cash flows for ISP: paid peering and service differentiation. Firstly, we show that under certain conditions on the cost structure and the level of demand elasticity and uncertainty, it can be profitable for a powerful content provider to resort to paid content peering, thus transferring to the ISP a part of his content provision revenue. The resulting business model may provide substantial benefits to all major participants in this ecosystem: network providers, content and service providers and end users. After this, we consider the situation when ISP differentiates the service offer by engaging in content provision, thus entering in direct competition with content providers.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the operator's network architecture as well as the related cost components including network elements and nodes. The objective is to support future network planning with a techno-economic sensitivity analysis of different deployment scenarios within a ten years' time frame. We found that with increasing traffic the cost optimized MPE locations move from few central locations towards all Mobile Transfer Points (MTP) in order to prevent the transport of MPE related overhead traffic. For very large traffic we suggest MPEs at even all core locations. However, there is no need to distribute the MPE locations to the Metro area level. If future structural network convergence will take place and the Mobile core network will be distributed to the Metro area this has to be analyzed further.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134181408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We then combine resulting transport network topologies with content delivery functions placed in caches. We analyze their impact on network CAPEX and optimize content delivery deployment for specific scenarios. Hence, operators need to compare different alternatives to cope with future demands. This paper presents a step-by-step techno-economic methodology to compare and identify the most convenient upgrade alternative(s). One of the possible migration scenarios is towards flexible grid optical networks. The comparative evaluation is made in terms of investment and operational expenditures considering the cost per spectral unit. The proposed methodology is applied to an operator having as initial scenario a statically operated network using a fixed grid with connections at 10 Gbps. Three different upgrade alternatives are evaluated: (i) static operation using the fixed grid is maintained but the bit rate of connections is increased to 100 Gbps; (ii) the network is operated dynamically (lightpaths established/released on demand) in a fixed grid with 100 Gbps connections and finally, (iii) a dynamic network operating with flexible grid. Results for this particular case, show that dynamic operation with flexible grid is not the most convenient migration alternative, given the high cost of the required equipment. This methodology is expected to be useful for network operators evaluating different upgrade alternatives for their infrastructure, and manufacturers aiming to evaluate the potential of their equipment.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129866888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as the delivered bandwidth grows, the data losses due to failures also rise. Moreover, the importance of uninterrupted network access is also growing, which makes network reliability a crucial problem to address. Furthermore, today's access network telecom arena has become very competitive, which forces network operators to reduce costs in order to gain some benefits. Cost reduction in access networks has been shown to be possible by node consolidation and fixed mobile convergence, due to the use of a single access network with different types of user and longer reach. This paper proposes four different protection schemes for converged access network architecture, where hybrid passive optical network is deployed to provide high bandwidth to the end users. The comparison is done in three different types of areas (i.e., Dense Urban, Urban and Rural) with respect to various aspects including connection availability, power consumption, required components, additional fiber and failure impact factor.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127790990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The life-cycle phases of a network from the idea to set up a certain product or service, followed by the installation and operation of the network up to the decommissioning of the equipment are taken into account. The work was performed within the EU Celtic Plus project SIGMONA [1] and makes use of survey results about reasonable network scenarios and deployment variances, which was carried out among the partners. The resulting set of assumptions is the base of the techno-economic model presented here. The structure of the model is documented and certain modelling techniques are described. Many scenarios are considered in the model, which address the split options to compose the network out of real or virtualized network (function) elements, consider the components being owned or rented as well as to deploy optimization means like the 6WINDGate technology [2] to foster packet forwarding efficiency. The software \"Strategic Telecoms Evaluation Model (STEM)\" [3] was used for the model development and result analysis.","PeriodicalId":299808,"journal":{"name":"2015 Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics (CTTE)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114459790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
