We present an all-in-one open source software suite and FPAA boards as one solution. The tools are capable of simulating and getting experimental results of mixed signal designs discussed in class. There are two options for students to get data, either remotely or locally. There is an option for students to create their own blocks, which will be shared with the class. To further use the robot's hardware platform, we made some modifications of the controller unit. In the process we developed a PCB with XESS XuLA FPGA board and Bluetooth module to replace the kit's initial controller. The Bluetooth module adds wireless programming functionality for the FPGA, which in turn is running on MicroBlaze soft-core processor. The outcome of the work is an over-the-air and in C language programmable Boe-bot robot kit. The remote laboratories enable students to access lab facilities out of the official laboratory time and automatically see the results without presence of the laboratory assistants. This paper presents an ad hoc, interactive and cost-efficient remote laboratory framework that has been designed for a “Digital Systems Modeling and Synthesis” course with the intention of improving quality of the laboratory work.
