Unfortunately, many buildings, structures and spaces are left abandoned because of changing situations, war, or natural causes. These abandoned buildings can increase the crime rate and leave lands covered in leftover spaces which can have drastic consequences on the environment. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to propose a set of design approaches that can apply the philosophy of metamorphosis in the revival of abandoned buildings with the goal of discovering adaptive solutions for abandoned buildings through their transformation. Hence, to accomplish this aim, this paper will cover accordingly a literature review, desk research case studies and previous readings about the relation of metamorphosis to abandoned buildings. Through the analysis, the research will detect ways of applying space transformation to abandoned buildings and will test the role of metamorphosis in reviving a place. That being the case, the paper will highlight on the reuse of abandoned buildings in Mar Mikhael, Lebanon as a case study.","PeriodicalId":29839,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architecture and Planning -King Saud University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89032363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Brownfield regeneration consists of three main sustainable fields: economical, environmental, and social. Brownfield regeneration is a main key in sustainable urban development. Thus, suffering from an economic crisis that affected all the veins of the country and left people in a bad situation. That shortage made the citizens feel miserable, unproductive, less efficient, and unpleased. This research aims to examine the validity of using the brownfield areas to be proper lands as a tool for resisting economic recession. To achieve the main aim, this paper will apply desk research, literature review, defining brownfield and its types in addition to field work and questionnaires. Through these studies, the paper will conclude with some recommendations and suggestions to regenerate some brownfields and its impact on the economy.","PeriodicalId":29839,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architecture and Planning -King Saud University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76745596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adding to that in the same context, neglected urban spaces are barren lands that have been forgotten by the government making these lands gaps scattered in the city like rivers that are natural freshwater streams that flow into a canal that leads to the sea, a lake, or another river. Harmonizing these areas into the society will offer opportunities for these spaces to become a liveable, social, urban public spaces. Unfortunately, forgotten, and neglected riverfronts areas are found in the cities, thus spaces that allow socialisation, relaxation, and the experience of different activities for different classes of society are nowhere to be found, but there are detached, unsafe spaces that give the feeling of surviving rather than living. The main aim of this paper is to provide an urban strategy that can revive the neglected riverfronts areas and transform them into healthy social spaces through recreational facilities. The research paper aims to investigate the neglected spaces that are within the area of Beirut’s River, which mainly has a context of very active economical spaces. The scientific methodology will be applied through site visiting, quaternary, and analytical studies these procedures will present a clearer view of the field of study of the neglected urban space. The paper ends with a set of conclusions, focusing on reviving neglected riverfronts and re-establishing them to create a sustainable cultural connection with the city and preserve its identity.","PeriodicalId":29839,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architecture and Planning -King Saud University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87234466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is critical of nostalgic interpretation and representation of built form in countries which have remained colonies. The theory around Critical Regionalism, at times, is also shunned as merely a ‘style’, lacking evolution and social connect with the local context. Although Critical Regionalism as a theory is restricted to a certain scale and typology of buildings, its contribution beyond the built form itself is little researched. Thus, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of public buildings, three universities, at Karachi which were designed around the concepts propagated by Critical Regionalist theory. This analysis is carried out within the larger debate of globalisation and localisation. The key factors focused are the response to climate, society, development of local aesthetics, connections with memory and identity and local urban morphology. Another aspect of analysis attempted through review of theories of other disciplines, geography and anthropology, is aimed towards drawing lessons in terms of research methods and vantage points which can inform Critical Regional theories. A case study methodology, along with ten qualitative interviews of architects and a focus group, has been used to generate data. The findings point towards the valuable contribution of these buildings in terms of climate, social and aesthetic response, and the limitations in terms of replicability to other building typologies and lack of establishment of a critical dialogue with larger","PeriodicalId":29839,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architecture and Planning -King Saud University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76643316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to create a systematic review on IAQ of educational buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) within the past 25 years, identify pollution risks, and indicate gaps in investigations. The review covers a collection of IAQ indices from subjective investigations, experimental studies, simulation work, physical environmental measurements, and statistical analysis from multi-disciplinary fields to introduce a holistic overview. This review is significant since investigations for such context with complete reliance on mechanical air-conditioning (AC), are limited in number and level of details. Using PRISMA guidelines, 17 original studies were found to fit the review criterion; some were unique in terms of examined variables. Among the reviewed studies, classroom CO2 concentrations and some of the measured indoor air pollutants were significantly higher than the values recommended by reference standards. Serious health risks and bacterial contaminations were associated with poor AC systems and inefficient ventilation. Implementation of practical guidelines is recommended to mitigate indoor environmental issues in classrooms and reduce their physical and psychological impact on occupants .","PeriodicalId":29839,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architecture and Planning -King Saud University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73513458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
