People experiencing CSB may engage in ineffective coping and have poor social support. The current study tested relationships between several coping orientations and sources of perceived social support (from significant others, friends, and family) among men seeking treatment for CSB and other sexual health and relationship concerns. Results indicated that religion and self-blame coping orientations predicted greater CSB concerns. Social support from friends and coping with humor were associated with lower CSB. These findings identify potential areas of intervention to target CSB-related concerns.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"30 1","pages":"22 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43927271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cumulative evidence shows that childhood sexual abuse can play a significant role in hypersexuality cases. In this study, female patients with hypersexuality were retrospectively analyzed in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables in 2020. 21 patients were diagnosed with hypersexual disorder according to Kafka’s proposed criteria. The mean age of the patients was 36.1 ± 9.0. Most of the patients had a history of sexual trauma. The most significant focus of this study was the diagnostic conversion from bipolar affective disorder to post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress symptoms directly affect hypersexual behavior through the mediation of depression, shame, and guilt. It is crucial to avoid assessing hypersexuality as a categorical symptom and pathological at first, and patients should be evaluated with their sociocultural aspects.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"30 1","pages":"1 - 21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46282204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because social and cultural factors may affect sexual life, it is believed that the effects of bariatric surgery on male sexuality in different cultures need to be evaluated. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore sexual experiences of Turkish obese men who underwent bariatric surgery. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 men who underwent bariatric surgery at a training and research hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed thematically. This sample of men described sexual dysfunction that lead to relationship problems before surgery. Physical health problems, difficulties at work such as stigma, and sexual problems were the factors that men decided to have bariatric surgery. Obese men stated that satisfaction in both sexual and emotional life improved after surgery. Along with the overall quality of life, improvements in the sexual life of obese men are one of the important effects of bariatric surgery that should be known.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"171 - 190"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42658047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study reports a clinical case of Excessive Sexual Drive (ESD) after mercury poisoning and its treatment. A 50-year-old man was referred to treatment because of persistent sexual urge after mercury poisoning. He took paroxetine under medical follow-up and received orientations addressing ESD. His mental status was accessed with neuropsychological test and using psychiatric scales. Sexual urge, impulsivity, and behavior became milder. Scores on neuropsychological test and on scales showed a decrease on anxiety, depression, and impulsivity. ESD can possibly occur after mercury poisoning. Paroxetine showed itself useful to control the sexual urge.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"191 - 197"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44513992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in the effects of pornographic media and personality traits on the PPU. Participants were a community sample of 502 men and 509 women, who completed an online questionnaire. Pornographic video, low self-control, and Fun Seeking affected the PPU for men and women. For women, Reward Responsiveness and Drive are also related to the severity of PPU. This study aims to examine sociodemographic and psychopathological factors that may predict PPU. Methods: 1,001 French adults (Mage = 25.56) were assessed via an online survey. Results and discussion: Male gender, attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) and obsessivecompulsive (OCD) symptoms are significant predictors of PPU. The tendency toward impulsivity of people with ADHD symptoms and the tendency toward compulsivity of people with OCD symptoms could explain their link with PPU. Conclusions: As sexual addiction, PPU lies on the impulsive–compulsive scale and could be classified as a behavioral addiction.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"108 - 126"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48269544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although in the literature it is often suggested that attachment issues and emotional dysregulation are at the root of this condition, no empirical research seems to have been conducted to confirm it. We aim to close this gap, through a study examining the relationship between love addiction, adult and childhood attachment and emotional dysregulation. The research involved a clinical group of 155 women and a 189-women control group. The clinical group reported significantly higher levels of emotional dysregulation and alexithymia, parental control, and preoccupied attachment, and lower levels of parental care. Many different patterns of correlation, as well as eight causal models, among the several measures were observed in the two groups. The results seem to suggest that the development of love addiction is conditioned by negative experiences of childhood and adult attachment, as well as by the mediating role of emotional dysregulation and alexithymia.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"127 - 148"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44749595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our study aims to provide empirical evidences about love addiction etiology and characteristics, and to analyze its relation to suicidality. Our result confirmed the phenomenological depiction of love addiction that so far has mainly been hypothesized in literature, also providing a deeper understanding of its characteristics. An association with suicidal and parasuicidal behaviors has been observed, highlighting the dramatic consequences love addiction can have and the importance of preventing them.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"56 - 67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44336815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the lack of a single definition and gold standard assessment for problematic pornography use, a valid multilingual instrument can help establish standard diagnostic criteria. This cross-sectional study enrolled 115 randomly selected men and women who filled out an online questionnaire in 2021. After translating and back-translating the questionnaire, we assessed face, content, construct validity, and reliability. The results indicated excellent face validity (impact score >1.5 for every item on the questionnaire), content validity (S-CVI/Ave = 0.95 and I-CV = 0.89–1 for all the items using the K* method) and construct validity (KMO = 0.67, Sig = p < 0.001). The construct validity results indicated that the PPCS-6 included two factors in the Iranian population. The scale also had excellent reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.97, intra-cluster correlation coefficients = 0.97, 95%CI (0.92–0.98)(. Due to the acceptable validity and reliability of the Persian version of PPCS-6, this scale can be used in large-scale studies where several instruments are employed, and there is often a time limitation. The psychometric examination of this instrument can contribute to achieving a unified concept and assessment of problematic pornography use.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"96 - 107"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49057358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We tested the inter-relationships between adults’ PPU, scrupulosity, six subdimensions of experiential avoidance (EA), and Dark Tetrad personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, subclinical sadism). Previous research, to our knowledge, has not yet considered subclinical sadism in this context. An online survey was completed by 672 volunteers (M Age=26.14 years, SD Age=8.33) in either the English or Spanish language. Reliable measures were used to evaluate co-variates. Analyses determined that total and sub-dimensional PPU was predicted by scrupulosity. Furthermore, PPU was predicted by certain sub-dimensions of EA (Behavioral Avoidance, Distress Aversion). Mediation analysis suggested four sub-dimensions of EA (Distress Aversion, Procrastination, Distraction/Suppression, and Repression/Denial) as mediators in the relationship between scrupulosity and PPU. Our research builds upon limited literature examining the impact of aversive personality traits on PPU. Our finding that PPU is positively predicted by vicarious sadism has implications for identification of at-risk individuals and can inform the development of interventions to mitigate PPU.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"29 1","pages":"68 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42795068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
