This study investigated the effectiveness of brief interventions in (I) reducing desire for pornography use and (II) increasing self-efficacy regarding pornography use, in a non-clinical online sample (n = 711). Participants’ craving for pornography was activated and then they were randomly assigned to one of the intervention conditions: life meaning, willpower, mindfulness, awe, or active control. The results indicated that life meaning could be effective in reducing craving for pornography. Future research should investigate the potential of similar interventions with clinical samples.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"312 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135474674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Legal SeIn reached high incidents. Participants with both PARA and HYPE (P+H) sought out more health care professionals, had more drastic negative sexual experiences (DSE) in adulthood and consisted of more males, while participants with exclusively PARA showed no gender difference. PARA and especially HYPE needs to be addressed proactively in clinical settings to foster a better understanding of current sexual norms. However, although most individuals watch porn for fun, a small percentage of porn users develop symptoms similar to addiction. This, in turn, generates interpersonal, occupational, or personal problems for the individual. The present study aims to study the efficacy of mindfulness meditation as a therapeutic tool in reducing problematic pornography use (PPU). Eight male problematic porn users practiced 20 mins mindfulness meditation daily for two weeks. The result showed that the mean score of the PPU scale during and post-intervention decreased significantly compared to the pretreatment levels. In conclusion it can be said that the practice of mindfulness meditation helps in reducing the PPU. Previous research has indicated that problematic IP users share similar experiences, neurobiological changes, and psychosocial effects to substance users. To date, there is no consensus in the research regarding diagnostic criteria, assessment tools or best practice treatment options for problematic IP use. This article builds on previous qualitative research on IP users and compares reported symptomatic behaviors with similar symptoms of substance use disorders. This may aid clinicians and services to recognize clients with problematic IP use. It also explores the case for the characterization of problematic IP Use as a distinct behavioral addiction. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and mediation analyses were employed to explore these relationships. Results reveal that sexual dysfunctional beliefs negatively impact both sexual well-being and marital satisfaction. Furthermore, sexual cognitive schemas mediate this relationship, underscoring the importance of addressing negative beliefs and promoting healthy cognitive schemas in interventions. This research highlights the influence of cultural and societal factors on Iranian women’s sexual attitudes and behaviors, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions to enhance sexual and relational outcomes.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135980895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the research regarding treatment of PPU is limited, particularly relational/systemic treatment has been underexplored. The present study utilized a phenomenological approach to understand the lived experience of 11 heterosexual, married, highly religious, American couples who have achieved significant recovery from PPU. The major themes that emerged from the interviews are Catalysts for Recovery, Foundation of Support, The Work, Healing Perspectives, and Hindrances and Cautions. Examples of themes and subthemes are discussed as well as implications for treatment of couples seeking healing from PPU.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136192343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this narrative review is to define what components of an integrated group therapy approach are required when delivering treatment for CSBD. This is done by synthesizing the elements of theory, practice, and psychotherapeutic intervention required when delivering support in relation to CSBD within group settings. Although discussed in psychological literature for years, treatment literature on CSBD lacks sufficient evidence-based approaches to develop a clear framework for implementing therapy styles and continues to defy easy categorization. The literature review of the clinical aspects of CSBD demonstrates that there is substantial heterogeneity within the disorder.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"30 1","pages":"273 - 294"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41734136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thematic analysis resulted in seven themes: (a) discovering sexuality, masturbation, and sexual orientation; (b) pornography usage; (c) pornography as a coping mechanism; (d) pornography preferences; (e) distress and stigma; (f) conflict with religious beliefs and values; and (g) normalization of pornography usage and sexuality. All women reported problematic pornography use; they wanted to stop using but could not stop despite repeated and consistent efforts. Recommendations include reducing female stigma surrounding pornography use, making acceptance and commitment therapies specifically targeted toward women more widely available, and improving sexuality education for women.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"30 1","pages":"252 - 272"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41847320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stress has been identified as central factor involved in dysregulated behaviors, acting both as cause and consequence. Overall, 99 heterosexual males participated in an experimental study. Experience of early childhood trauma, chronic stress, acute responses toward a stressor, emotion regulation strategies, and coping were associated with symptoms of PPU. Alterations within neural stress circuits due to childhood trauma and chronic stress may interact with neural circuits of reward and executive control. Coping with acute, chronic and past stressors should be an essential component in treatment approaches.","PeriodicalId":29814,"journal":{"name":"Sexual Health & Compulsivity","volume":"30 1","pages":"231 - 251"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44455133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
