However, the model is not very robust; the high parameter sensitivities associated with the synthesis of NADP and glutathione suggest that this portion of the model is illconditioned. Signals propagated from independent to dependent variables are attenuated in some cases and amplified in others. These influences exhibit large values, both negative as well as positive. The average influence on any given flux can be as high as 2/3, which is 27-fold greater than the value of 1/41 predicted on the basis of summation relationships [Kacser and Burns, 19811 and supports criticisms of this approach based on theoretical grounds [Savageau and Sorribas, 19891. The accuracy with which the theory predicts responses to a 10% variation of the independent variables is within 0.5% on the average.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123735331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An aorta with a bifurcation has been molded into the torso via a \"lost wax\" procedure. B-scan images of contrast medium and color-flaw Doppler images show flow patterns typical of peripheral vessels in Doppler phantoms. In addition, three coronary arteries have been attached to the externd surface of the ventricle. Contrast injection of aerated water in the coronary arteries are easily visualized in real-time Bscan images.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121231536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed algorithm learns from previous beats, so the prediction error decreases with time, thus accurately predicting the electrocardiogram. The algorithm detects changes in morphology (such as occurs during the spontaneous onset of VT during SR) by monitoring sudden increases in prediction error and is successful in all cases.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114556986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need for making high resolution, non-destructive measmments of tissues functioning in vivo leave few tools available to the researcher. We are currently testing a three dimensional ultrasonic micrometer that will be used to provide morphometxic data on the functioning aortic valve in an isolated porcine heart model. Preliminary results indicate that a theoretical 62.5 pm spatial resolution is achievable, within a sample volume 8 cm on a side, at rates in excess of 5 kHz.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121596403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A high resolution body surface Laplacian mapping system has been developed and successfully applied to study the Laplacian maps of noxmal human subjects. Both simulation and experimental studies have shown that the body surface Laplacian mapping provides much better spatial resolution than potential mapping. This may enable Laplacian mapping to identify from the body surface spatially separated myocardial events, and to play a signifcant role in quantitative cardiac electrophysiology. superior spatial resolution in identifying multiple sources in the heart [SI. In the present study, we have developed a special bipolar 'Laplacian' electrode to sense the surface Laplacian and a high resolution mapping system to measure the BSLM. The developed techniques have been successfully applied to map the cardiac electrical events in normal human subjects and will be described in this paper.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121678555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two groups of women with mammographic parenchymal appearance associated with high (Dy, n=ll) and low (Nl, n=l 1) risk of breast cancer were measured. The two groups have significantly different average relative water content (pc0.001) and average T1 (pcO.0001). Pixel histograms of T2 values show marked differences between the two groups which can be characterized with a fourth moment parameter. Additional measures of texture such as fractal dimension and fraction of dysplastic tissue have been used to analyze the x-ray mammograms and compare with the MR parameters.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114759787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used a rat island muscle flap to study post-shock membrane impedance, and an intact rat hind limb flexor muscle for post-shock pathological studies. Muscle membrane impedance, a measure of membrane integrity, fell to 50% of initial values following a series of 60 150 V/cm direct current pulses of four milliseconds in duration. Histological preparations of the flexor muscle showed significant damage to the muscle architecture following 5 seconds of exposure to a 60 V/cm laternating current electric field. No significant change in temperature was seen in either set of experiments.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114776426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The initial data for this study was obtained through CT scans of a fresh cadaver wrist specimen scanned in ten different positions. The wrist was scanned at 1 mm intervals through seven different positions from 80\" extension to 70\" flexion, and in three positions from ulnar to radial deviation. The digital CT data was converted to profile sections through the use of an edge following algorithm [1,2]. The profile information was then analyzed by two teams. Each team independently built solid models of the wrist in all ten positions using two different software packages. The volume, principal axes, and three principal moments of inertia of each of the eight bones of the wrist were determined from the computer models using two software techniques. Reconstruction of the wrist bones from digital data to computer generated, 3-D models produced an average relative difference of 3.1% for volume, 6.7% for the first principal moment of inertia, 6.5% for the second principal moment of inertia, and 6.6% for the third principal moment of inertia between the two methods. The computer models predicted that, with a proximal row carpectomy, the maximum range of motion as determined by bone configuration is 64' of extension (80% normal), and 65' of flexion (94% normal).","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124300672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
