The analytical solutions and nonlinear natural frequencies of the non-driven pendulum are first derived, and then the energy increments in the stochastic and resonant layers for the driven pendulum are approximated by the work done by the external excitation along the heteroclinic and resonant orbits, respectively. From these results, the approximate analytical conditions for the predictions of stochastic and resonant layers are constructed. Based on these conditions, input parameters are computed for the numerical simulations of the stochastic and resonant layers. The stochastic and resonant layers associated with the librational and rotational motions are illustrated via the Poincare mapping sections.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125745879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The controller seeks to minimize a quadratic control objective and is implemented for a reduced order model by coupling a virtual second order system with each critical mode in the quadratic control objective. The energy transfer phenomena between each mode and the controller is maximized by coupling the appropriate states of the plant and the controller. Energy is transfered from the plant to the controller where it is dissipated via linear damping.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131488803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The damping characteristics of the tube/ACLD system are modeled by Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method in order to predict the tube response in the time domain. The transient response of tube/ACLD system is calculated using the finite element method. The predicted response is compared with that of a tube controlled with conventional Passive Constrained Layer Damping (PCLD) treatments. Such comparisons are essential in quantifying the individual contribution of the active and passive damping components to the overall damping characteristics of the system.\u0000 The predictions of the finite element model are validated experimentally using a cantilevered PVC plastic tube treated with an ACLD patch placed parallel to the tube longitudinal axis. The tube vibration due to an internally moving load is controlled by the ACLD patch using a simple velocity feedback controller. The effectiveness of the controller in damping out the tube vibration is determined experimentally and theoretically for different control gains. Close agreement is obtained between theory and experiments. The results obtained suggest the effectiveness of the ACLD treatment in controlling the vibration of precision pointing systems such as weapon systems.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131816115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A small-stretch, moderate-rotation plate theory of Nowinski (1964), leading to von Kármán type field equations is used. This leads to nonlinear modal interactions of a pair of 1 – 1 internally resonant, asymmetric modes which are studied through first-order averaging. The resulting amplitude equations represent a system whose O(2) symmetry is broken by a resonant rotating force.\u0000 The nonlinear coupling of the modes induces steady state solutions that have no apparent evolution from any previous linear analyses of this problem. For undamped disks, the analysis of the averaged Hamiltonian predicts codimension-two bifurcations that give rise to sets of doubly-degenerate, one-dimensional manifolds of steady mixed wave motions. These manifolds of steady motions are bounded in phase space by either mode localized backward travelling wave branches or forward travelling wave branches. On the addition of the smallest damping, the branches of the backward travelling waves with equal modal content become isolated, and numerical investigations indicate the absence of any other types of steady motions.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127423022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, numerical performance studies are presented for a controller employing this algorithm to suppress global vibrations of a simple example beam structure. The performance of optimal power absorption control strategy based only on measurement at the actuator location is compared to the performance of an optimal Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller with the same single actuator but with full state (or modal) feedback. The power absorption strategy achieved vibration reduction similar to the optimal LQR controller over most of the frequency range examined. As expected, both of these control strategies resulted in substantially better global vibration reduction than a controller that minimizes motion only at the single actuator location.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"400 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123648659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we proposed two predictive control methods for mechanical systems. The input time series or the output time series of a mechanical system in the near future was predicted by the short-term prediction method based on chaos theory and we used the obtained time series effectively to get the control force. The algorithm of the short-term prediction method, which is based on Takens’s theorem, used in this study and a condition to have sufficient precision of prediction were discussed from practical engineering points. The effectiveness of the proposed control methods was shown by numerical results and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130793785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that integration of APPN with ACL cannot obtain much extra damping because of low inverse transmissibility, while the APPN-EACL configuration can achieve high damping around the shunt frequency. The APPN-EACL can be synthesized to outperform the APPN, EACL and APPN-ACL configurations under both narrowband and broadband excitations. The study indicates that while EACL can outperform ACL when the demand on performance is high, it will become less effective than ACL when control effort is very limited. However, with the help of the shunt circuit, APPN-EACL can outperform the APPN-ACL system even when the limitation on control effort is high.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123880427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerical solutions for the steady-state amplitudes and phases of systems of two and four bubbles are presented. An interesting phenomenon observed is that of nonlinear localization, wherein vibrational energy becomes spatially localized to a single bubble (strong localization) or to a subset of bubbles (weak localization). Moreover, it is shown that the spatially extended motion (wherein all bubbles oscillate with identical amplitudes and phases, which one would obtain based upon a linearized analysis) is unstable, and thus not physically realizable, for certain separation distances.","PeriodicalId":297791,"journal":{"name":"Active/Passive Vibration Control and Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133679038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
