The study explores the transgender men’s experiences of having and raising children in this family constellation, with a specific focus on how they experience gender in their parenting role. Semi-structured inter-views were conducted with three participants. The data was transcribed and analyzed with thematic analysis. Results of the analysis showed that the participants had experienced gender dysphoria before and during pregnancy, but also embraced their childbearing capacity. As transgender fathers, they found themselves expected to fulfill gendered expectations for women and mothers but sometimes appreciated access to women’s spaces. The participants had employed different strategies to protect their masculine selves, such as concealing their pregnancy and/or defending the right to be respected as transgender pregnant men. When passing as cisgender men, they experienced being praised for taking care of their children. They did not receive such praise when they were assumed to be women or known to be transgender men. The men struggled with inequality in their relationships, reflecting each partner’s assigned gender at birth. Still, they emphasized that same-gender relationships facilitated attempts to achieve equality.","PeriodicalId":29696,"journal":{"name":"LGBTQ Family-An Interdisciplinary Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85503508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing research has explored the experiences of parents who diverge from such assumptions, but limited research has focused on trans and/or non-binary (TNB) parents specifically. Research on non-parent TNB populations suggests that individuals with different gender identities may have different experiences. This study therefore aimed to understand the way in which gendered assumptions about parenting shape the experiences of TNB parents, paying particular attention to the distinct experiences of parents with different gender identities (i.e. trans men, trans women and non-binary parents). Reflective thematic analysis was conducted on interview data from 13 TNB parents within the UK. Three themes were identified: 'Motherhood: essential and exclusionary'; 'Fathers as uninvolved parents: negotiating fatherhood' and 'Mum, Dad and nothing in between: parenting beyond the binary'. Parents with different gender identities were impacted differently by gendered assumptions, and generally, parents negotiated with and transcended restrictive norms. Findings highlight the analytical benefit of distinguishing between parenting identity (e.g. mum/dad/parent) and parenting practice (e.g. mothering/fathering/parenting). The findings expose the limitations of such terms as participants were found to go 'beyond mum and dad', in both their identities and practice.</p>","PeriodicalId":29696,"journal":{"name":"LGBTQ Family-An Interdisciplinary Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9359002/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40710506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parents of trans children accordingly face conflicting advice on the appropriate timing of ‘social transition’, where social transition connotes external acceptance and affirmation of a child’s identity. This innovative research brings experience-based insights from 30 UK-based parents (93% female), who supported 30 trans children to socially transition at an average age of seven years old (range 3–10 years old). Data were analyzed through inductive reflexive thematic analysis to understand interviewee experiences and perceptions related to the timing of social transi- tion. Analysis highlights two broad themes; firstly, the influence of cisnormativity on delay, with parents revealing deeply embedded resistance to trans possibilities. Secondly, parental perception of delays causing distress, even in families who may be considered affirming. The study reinforces existing research on the importance of affirmation and family support. The study also highlights the support parents may need to overcome cisnor- mative barriers to supportiveness, and the distress, frustration and trauma that trans children may experience, even within affirming families.","PeriodicalId":29696,"journal":{"name":"LGBTQ Family-An Interdisciplinary Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76656246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
