Andrey Pantev (hist.), is made. The stages of his construction as a scientist are characterized. The unusual breadth of his research interests, extending to the new and modern Bulgarian, Balkan, European and world history, is outlined. His unusual style of restoring the past stands out. It is understood in his specific creative laboratory. On this basis, his elegant difference among colleagues from the professional guild is shown. Special attention is paid to his civic position before and after the beginning of the democratic renewal of the country, as well as his fascinating and artistic stay in the public space and his bright presence in the development of the new Bulgarian parliamentarism. Professor Andrey Pantev is shown as a gifted modern historian, an original scientist with his contributions in other fields of science, a prominent public figure and one of the greatest intellectuals of modern Bulgaria, as a true aristocrat of the spirit of European and world greatness.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48251399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"“Old”/“New” Settlements and Administrative Centers in the Ottoman Provincial Administration: Ala Kinise/ Osman Pazar and Hotalich/ Servi (Selvi) (According to Ottoman Documents From the 15th–17th Centuries)","authors":"K. Mutafova","doi":"10.54664/wdog9119","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54664/wdog9119","url":null,"abstract":"The study raises questions about the fate of the medieval Bulgarian fortresses and urban centers in the system of Ottoman provincial administration, which has repeatedly been discussed in Balkan and Ottoman studies. These debates are constantly related to the issues of continuity in the administration and ruling of the Bulgarian lands, evidenced in the territorial overlap of the medieval administrative structures with the new Ottoman ones, as well as in the names of the sanjaks, nahiyes and vilayets. One of the problems that is yet to be completely solved has to do with the medieval fortresses and settlements, registered with their pre-Ottoman names as important administrative centers in the system of Ottoman provincial administration (nahiyes, vilayets, kazas), but most likely destroyed during the conquest or earlier. New settlements are developing near them which have different names but the same administrative functions. Many of them are problematic to be localized, but for centuries, these “old” settlements and centers of power have been referred to in parallel with the “new” settlements as another name (nam-i diğer) for the respective administrative centers. The present study focuses on two of the examples of continuity and parallel designation of the “old”/“new” settlements – nahiye Ala Kinise (Kilisa)/ Osman Pazar and nahiye Hotaliç/ Servi (Selvi). These administrative-territorial units are typical of the Ottoman model of administration at local level, as well as regarding the presence of a particular continuity from the medieval Bulgarian state. The complex approach applied in the research and interpretation of the Ottoman register material allows us not only to trace the indications of continuity in the development of individual settlements, but also to understand the pre-Ottoman period of their existence within the medieval Bulgarian state. In a broader sense, it provides a real opportunity for a well-grounded reconstruction of the Ottoman model of power, demographic and economic control of the Bulgarian lands at local level.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46247528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first two dates in King Milutin’s (1282–1321) and Stephen Dečanski`s (1321–1331) reigns. In both instances, the unification proposals came from Bulgaria. Furthermore, Sigismund von Luxembourg (1387–1437) acquired in 1394 the right to receive the Bosnian royal crown. With the decline of Hungarian influence in Bosnia, the prospects of realizing this bold plan lost momentum. The last case examines the prevailing circumstances that led to establishing a short-lived personal union between Bosnia and the Serbian Despotate 1458/1459.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44112830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, Dracontius not only combines different mythological stories about Orestes and his relatives, but also highlights Orestes’ moving into adulthood as one of the main storylines. Dracontius breaks from the existing tradition, within the framework of which young Orestes was placed under the care of Strophius, the King Crissa in Phocis, and then returned to his homeland to avenge the death of Agamemnon. His Orestes is not so much a “product” of educating people who seek to implement the revenge plan, but rather a person who implements a hidden self-education program that helps him in the struggle for power. Dracontius’ protagonist is struck with a specific type of moral disease; he is portrayed either as a man who knows (= an adult) or a man who does not know (= still a child). The article also explores the use of Thebes by Dracontius as a mirror, which reflects the events of the Orestis Tragoedia. Draconius also uses the mythological tradition associated with Thebes as a means of assessing the behavior of his heroes.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44417877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The topic is very debatable and only four authors stand out with contributions, but these are some of the most famous representatives of our national historiography in the twentieth century – Peter Mutafchiev, Hristo Gandev, Dimitar Angelov, Nikolay Genchev. Their research and opinions are presented along with other issues related to the topic of the study. The studies of the so-called “People's Psychology” for the period are untenable. Freedom-non-freedom; truth-untruth; morality-spiritual decline; material-spiritual. For Epictetus non-freedom is a consequence of spiritual degradation of a corrupt mind, which is not free and trades everything against everything. In his world “the thirst for offices and wealth makes you inferior and subordinate to others”. This is the enchanted realm of the seemingly free, who “kiss the hands of the slaves of others”. Is Freedom achievable, how and when, asks Epictetus and his questions, along with his answers sound like a testament to the future people.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48956276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Military Jubilees on the Borderline between the 20th and 21st Centuries: Conteporary Tendencies in the Theory and Practice of the Memorial Culture","authors":"V. Zemtsov","doi":"10.54664/cikv2028","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54664/cikv2028","url":null,"abstract":"The article based on materials from military anniversaries of the late XX – early XXI centuries reveals the main trends in the politics of memory in relation to the history of wars of the XIX–XX centuries against the backdrop of digitalization of the information space. The 50th anniversary of the end of World War II (1995) and the events related to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of this war (2019), as well as the 250th anniversary of the birth of Napoleon (2019) are taken as milestone events. As a result of the study, the author identified two trends. Firstly, a trend of a transnational and transcultural nature, focused mainly on general humanistic values. Secondly, the tendency towards a nationally-oriented and politically biased policy, which became prevailing from 2004-2005. The second trend has become characteristic, first of all, for most countries of the post-Soviet space, including the countries of Central and Southeast Europe and Russia. Judging by the fact that a number of Asian countries (primarily China and Japan) have come to the forefront of anniversary events related to World War II, the tendency to decisively revise the transnational and transcultural vectors in the politics of memory in these countries has also become dominant. Western countries also, regardless of attempts to maintain a commitment to tolerance and transnationalism, were caught up in “memory wars” and, as a rule, in connection with the events of military history. The activation of the “memory wars” is largely associated with fundamental changes in the information environment, primarily in connection with the processes of its digitalization. The author believes that the prevalence of the second trend was predetermined by the end of the modernist revolution, which by the end of the twentieth century ended as the dominant world process that determined main parameters of the historical process in the second half of the twentieth century. The consequence of this from the turn of the century has been an increase in the fragmentation of the world and an explosion of thirst for identity. In this regard, historical memory and its twin-antipode, historical politics, have become the main tools (and often creators) of this identity - national, state, religious, ethnic, group and any other form of identity.","PeriodicalId":29684,"journal":{"name":"Epohi","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45676291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
