If until the 90’s the suburbs offered an attractive way of life, today many suburban territories arein demographic and economic decline. The province of Limburg in Flanders (Belgium) is a clear example of such condition. The article illustrates a design-research project that aimed at rethinking this suburban territory as a place where new generations could live and work. For this reason, we propose to examine the concept of 'adaptability' in housing based on the study of a series of projects in which we find a specific arrangement of rooms, which we call 'equipotential' or 'checkered' space. Paradigma arquitectónico de espacio libre y el ocio posibilitado por la automatización del trabajo, New Babylon fue capaz de visualizar, también, la arquitectura del mundo post-laboral. Un mundo que, cin- cuenta años después, empieza a tomar formas concretas. Hoy, la arquitectura de la plena automatización está implementándose en lugares como Holanda y China. Su introducción agita los mercados laborales, así como la configuración de espacios y tareas humanas que han quedado obsoletos con la irrupción de las máquinas en los centros productivos. Estos cambios disruptivos, sin embargo, también podrían ser un detonante para la reinvención de las nociones del trabajo humano y su arquitectura, desde la perspectiva de su posible obsolescencia. La disciplina arquitectónica enfrenta el desafío de responder a la introducción de las tecnologías de automatización. {"title":"Peace-walls, Flags, and Dark Passages","authors":"M. McLintock","doi":"10.56255/ma.v0i20.490","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56255/ma.v0i20.490","url":null,"abstract":"The cites of Belfast and Londonderry in Northern Ireland are fractured with a network of walls, fences, and barricades, that divide traditionally Loyalist- Unionist-Protestants from Republican- Nationalist-Catholics communities. They were mostly constructed between the late 1960s and early 1990s, during a period of conflict known as ‘The Troubles.’ Since 1995, the walls have been rebranded with the official euphemism ‘peace walls,’ and the groups they divide renamed as ‘interface communities.’ They are due to be removed by 2023, as part of commitments drawn out in the Good Friday Agreement; the 1998 accord that largely brought an end to the conflict. However, due to Northern Ireland’s devolved government, and a lack of funding towards the advocacy groups needed to bring these opposing communities together, among other opaque issues, this goal is increasingly unattainable. Woven throughout this network of fortification infrastructures is a nascent tourist typology and muralscape that is complex and murky, bound up in underexplored emergent identity politics. Covering different territories and media, this essay aims at suggesting new ways of thinking about architecture and its digital representation as a medium for political engagement. It is my suggestion that, the information of space, or more precisely, architecture, can be deployed to reduce the ‘uncertainty’ of a message encountered online and can therefore \u0000be used for legitimization. Starting with Times Square in New York, the context of the research expands to Central Asia and investigates the relevant debates. It looks like, actors on the global political stage such as China, India, and Pakistan have been using the built environment of another global power, the USA, to validate their claims about each other. UU.) visualizaron sus hogares con TV entre las décadas de 1950 y 1970. Se indaga en el uso de la TV como lugar para posar y para la presentación de identi- dades individuales y familiares. En lugar de sencillamente limitarse a mirar la TV, las personas llevaron a caboperformances frente al televisor, transformando el aparato de TV en un espacio escenográfico. El artículo con- sidera una variedad de situaciones espaciales en hogares con TV: desde espacios vacíos a espacios teatrales y espacios de extrañeza. McLintock","doi":"10.56255/ma.v0i20.482","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56255/ma.v0i20.482","url":null,"abstract":"Las ciudades de Belfast y Londonderry en Irlanda del Norte están fracturadas por una red de muros, rejas y barricadas que divide a las comunidades tradicionalmente protestantes-lealistas-unionistas de las repu- blicanas-nacionalistas-católicas. Fueron construidas, en su mayoría, entre fines de los sesenta y comienzos de los noventa, durante un periodo de disputas conocido como “El Conflicto” (The Troubles). Desde 1995, los muros han sido oficialmente renombrados con el eufemismo “muros de paz” (peace walls); y los grupos sociales que estos dividen, rebautizados como “comunidades interfaz” (interface communities). Su retiro está programado para 2023 como parte de los compromisos incluidos en el Acuerdo de Viernes Santo, el acuerdo de paz firmado en 1998 que, en gran medida, puso fin al conflicto. Sin embargo, debido al gobierno descentralizado de Irlanda del Norte y la falta de financiamiento a los grupos de apoyo nece- sarios para volver a reunir a estas comunidades divididas, entre otras problemáticas menos transparentes, este objetivo parece cada vez más irrealizable.
