Statistics show that as one of the main factors leading to the failure of the insulation of electric power equipment, lightning over-voltage is becoming a major threat not be ignored to the safe operation of power network. Study on response characteristics of lightning wave on propagation plays a crucial role in insulation configuration. The lightning waves in substation are simulated based on ATP-EMTP in the paper, the lightning waves are simulated under different situations such as different types of original lightning waves, different lightning points, different collection position, and the wave characteristics are analyzed. The response characteristics of lightning waves are obtained on power system propagation.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123763354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to measurement errors, these strokes may not all be reported at the same location even if they are part of the same flash. However, most of the strokes will have 99th percentile error ellipses including this point of interest. This paper describes a method for evaluating the probability of a flash (multiple strokes) attaching to a location in an area of interest. Flashes with more 99th percentile error ellipses including the point of interest can then be compared with flashes with fewer 99th percentile error ellipses including the point of interest. A case study involving a damaged solar panel is presented and the method is applied. The damage was found subsequent to a thunderstorm, and the time of a transient on the output voltage of the panel was recorded. Flashes that were reported at the time of the event are shown to have a high probability of attaching to the location of the panel and can be distinguished from other flashes.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116882948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting magnitude of voltage and current can be attenuated or amplified, due to the reflection process of their waves in points of the system where there is discontinuity of the surge impedance value. The objective of this study is to present an incipient method for investigation of electrical transients due to lightning strikes that reaches directly on overhead lines with an underground insulated cable section. The influence of varying number and positioning of MO arresters in the system, also the variation of the underground cable length, on the maximum voltage at the insulated cable joints are evaluated. This voltage cannot exceed the safety margin considered for the Basic Insulation Level Margin (BIL) of the insulated cable. The energy absorbed by the MO arresters is also analyzed. The results are representative regarding the use of MO arresters to protect transmission lines with insulated cable sections. From the obtained total energy and safety margin, it can be determined which configuration and protection arrangement is the most technically viable.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129147702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disaster risk assessment services have been widely used in lightning protection centers of many cities in China for years. At present, electromagnetic environment assessment services are being used more and more at many lightning protection centers in China, with various methods. Most of them adopt an expensive commercial software package which needs 3D modeling of complex structure and high computational costs. This article describes a useful assessment tool based on finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method focusing on an electromagnetic environment of buildings featured with a simple setup procedure. This software package has been applied in daily evaluation services, filling gaps of the current commercial software, leading to a great potential in this area.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130311952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to assist the analysis of lightning effects in power quality indices, we present in this paper, a detailed analysis of the local electric field, combined with the information from Lightning Location Systems (LLS) and voltage waveforms recorded in the distribution network. The proposed analysis is performed in a monitoring network that was particularly designed for the approach presented in this paper. The monitoring network is composed by four Campbell Field Mill sensors, four waveform recorders and the LLS information. Based on the local electric field profile, it is possible to confirm (or reject) lightning activity in the region under analysis, by comparing the information recorded by these three sources of information. Finally, we present some initial case studies addressing the advantages and main limitations of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121688475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lightning strokes, whether direct or indirect, are among the main causes of such power quality disturbances. In order to assist the analysis of lightning effects on power quality indices, we present in this paper a monitoring network and an integrated database analysis, including voltage waveform recorders, local electric field measurement, information from Lightning Location Systems, and utility databases. The idea is to present a general procedure to indicate the correlation between lightning and power quality events (mainly short-circuits) in the monitored distribution network. Also, we present an automatic waveform analysis that allows the automatic segmentation and classification of transients in a waveform and a simulation procedure that assists the correlation process. Finally, we present an initial case study addressing the advantages and relevant correlations that can be obtained from the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"530 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124507762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Colombia, a country with a high keraunic level, reports frequently lightning fatalities involving several injury mechanisms. However, there are also some fortunate cases where the victims have survived without disabling traumas. Two nonfatal events in which lightning strikes persons are reported. In both cases it is observed that some metal objects such as necklaces or buckle belts saved the life and integrity of the victims. Moreover, both the relative localization and the comprehensive description of the cases scenarios involving visual consequences in the victim's skin are presented. In this study, a direct lightning strike is assumed at different points of a distribution line terminated at a 10 kVA 7.967 kV/240-120 V single-phase transformer with center-tapped secondary. The distribution line is modeled using the JMarti model modified to include the variation with frequency of the ground resistivity and permittivity. The transformer is represented as a two-port model valid in a wide frequency range. Insulation breakdown is modeled using the disruptive effect method and for simplicity the grounding impedances are represented as simple resistances. Voltages transferred to the transformer secondary are calculated for different conditions. It is shown that considering dispersive ground parameters does not have a significant influence on phase-to-neutral voltages transferred through the transformer to its low-voltage side in the investigated cases.","PeriodicalId":296478,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130193610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
