We determine the conditions for complex periodic media with in-phase gain and index modulations to support self-collimation, non-diffractive propagation, with simultaneous non-diffusive broadening of the beam. We also analyze self-collimation in media where index and gain modulations are dephased by a quarter of the spatial period, hence being PT-symmetric. The propagation properties of such PT-symmetric complex media may be reduced to two limiting cases, either to a Photonic Crystal case with a pure index modulation or to a pure gain modulated media, at each side of the PT-transition condition.","PeriodicalId":295541,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132557667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider multimode waveguides with transverse PT-symmetry, hence we have N parallel stripe pairs (one gain stripe and one loss stripe) in the waveguide. The evolution of eigenmodes and eigenvalues in clusters of 2N modes that undergo N successive exceptional points is evidenced for realistic and idealised structures. Targeting a regime just above an exceptional point allows a pair of modes to be selected. We show the potential for selecting such modes with a good rejection against other modes, in comparison of non PT-symmetric schemes. This could become a tool for multichannel communication.","PeriodicalId":295541,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115600285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While current deployments in these networks consist mostly of 100 Gb/s channels, future ones will also include single carrier 200 Gb/s channels and super channels for 400 Gb/s and beyond, all of which in coherent formats. Meanwhile, metro networks also have started to evolve from directly to coherently-detected modulation formats, benefiting from the reduced costs associated to higher volume production of coherent 100 Gb/s transponders. As both metro and core networks will soon converge to coherently-detected formats, this will facilitate exploiting transparent handover of wavelength services between both network segments to reduce overall capital expenditures, especially in scenarios where the same operator has a core network to provide interconnectivity between several metro networks. This paper overviews how traffic handover between the metro and core is currently realized, identifies challenges associated to using transparent handover and projects how technology evolution will enable to mitigate some of them.","PeriodicalId":295541,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122219833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we review recent progress at the ORC towards achieving long lengths of uniform fibre and in particular describe the fabrication of a 11 km long span of HC-PBGF with relatively low loss (~5 dB/km), wide bandwidth (~200 nm) and good longitudinal uniformity. The fibre span was able to support error free transmission at 10 Gbit/s across the entire C-Band. We believe this represents a major stepping stone in the demonstration of the viability of this technology for low-latency data transmission.","PeriodicalId":295541,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123464648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigation is performed realistically, by taking into account the spectroscopic parameters measured on samples of the aforesaid glasses. The aim is to investigate the feasibility of optical beam generation close to 4.4 μm wavelength. An output power of 107.2 mW with an input pump power of 1 W is calculated. This result indicates that the designed laser configuration can lead to a feasible medium infrared source which could find application in optical free propagation, biomedicine and sensing.","PeriodicalId":295541,"journal":{"name":"2015 17th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123298652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
