It is expected that next generation systems will move more and more towards open systems. However, their architecture and features will be influenced by the emergence of many new technologies. Two dominant technologies will be multi-media and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) communications. Multi-media technology allows the provision of a superior MMI which will greatly boost the efficiency os SCADA operators. ATM technology, which blurs the distinction between LANs and WANs, will revolutionise the architecture of future power systems and greatly increase their performance as well as raising the limits of scalability and expandability of the new systems.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115173554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a first step, a security upgrade system (SUS) was added to perform all network security functions. The SUS was designed for continuous improvement through future releases from the vendor. Since its installation, the SUS has gone through two upgrade cycles within the last three years. Upgrade of EMS software offers considerable advantages to a utility, viz. new functionality, access to the latest technology, uniformity with other users of the software, standard fixes to software bugs. It also poses considerable risks by compromising integrity of the system during upgrade. This study discusses our experience through two upgrade cycles. In particular, it discusses the methodology used to track changes to the software during and between upgrades and the effort required for the upgrade. The study suggests several guidelines to make future upgrades of EMS software easier to perform.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116873751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique uses contingency analysis to select the most limiting contingencies, then generates PV curves for the selected cases. Adaptive transfer increments and limits on the transfer range to study are used to give the algorithm the speed necessary for on line applications. The results of the computer implementation of the approach are also presented.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115272191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A reactive power market approach has been proposed by NGC and continues to be evaluated. Such an approach includes a novel requirement for transmission constrained economic dispatch of VAr, a problem in the security constrained optimal power flow (OPF) class. The problem formulations handled by the OPF package in use could not accommodate NGC's requirements. This paper describes the reactive pricing problem being addressed, the modeling requirements, and the resulting extensions made to the OPF formulation and package. It discusses the test results obtained to date on the NGC system.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128810527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analysis provides a quantitative measure of the quality of energy in terms of its ability to perform work and leads to a more rational use of energy. A general and easy-to-use model, implemented in object oriented programming, is developed for the planning of electric energy systems including exergetic considerations. The model presented is applied to a space-beating study and to a regional planning case.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130976719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developers are being forced to analyze multiple environments (PC/workstations, expert systems or procedural systems, structural programming or object-oriented (OO) programming, and others) in order to deliver the capabilities that are expected from them. In this paper, the authors share some of the insights that they have learned over the period of developing applications in a multi-hardware platform/multi-operating system environment: application of OO technology to simplify the software design, maintenance, and integration processes; provide a unified abstract interface to be integrated with other software components; use the same OO paradigm to design various parts of the system; provide an intuitive user interface; and reduce software development and maintenance costs. The authors have also provided a source database design case study to illustrate the use of OO technology in EMS application development. Some ideas explored in this paper have been fully utilized.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129367205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is divided into two stages, the commitment stage and the constrained economic dispatch stage. The proposed mathematical model incorporates optimal power flow (OPF) constraints in the unit commitment stage. By OPF constrains, the authors refer to the relevant active power constraints that are incorporated in the constrained economic dispatch stage (i.e. transmission capacity constraints, fuel and various regulated emission requirements). The inclusion of OPF constraints in the commitment stage will improve the feasibility of the constrained economic dispatch solution. Other unit commitment constraints such as spinning and operating reserve requirements, power balance as well as other relevant local constraints (i.e. unit ramping rates, upper and lower generation limits, minimum up and down times) are taken into account in the proposed model. As a larger number of constraints are dealt with, a more rigorous method is introduced for updating Lagrange multipliers to improve the solution convergence. A software package which addresses energy management systems requirements is developed and tested.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126167407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three of the methods are existing methods, while a new method is proposed. The performance of all the methods is carried out by comparing with full solutions using a continuation power flow. To implement this concept, a design optimization framework, named design by expectation (DBE), is developed. DBE exploits the adaptation of genetic algorithms in searching the optimal solution, and releases the strict requirements for objective functions and constraints in conventional optimization techniques. One example, street lighting design, is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":294493,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Power Industry Computer Applications Conference","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116899967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
