Through these techniques, participants act both as authors and reviewers over each other¿s work. However, as Web-based cooperating environments continuously grow in popularity, there is a need to develop intelligent mechanisms that will retrieve the optimal group of reviewers to comment on the work of each author, with a view to increasing the usefulness that these comments will have on the author¿s final result. This paper introduces a novel technique that incorporates feed forward neural networks to determine the optimal reviewers for a specific author during a peer assessment procedure. The proposed method seeks to match author to reviewer profiles based on feedback regarding the usefulness of reviewer comments as it was perceived by the author. The method was tested on educational e-learning data and the preliminary results that it yielded are promising.","PeriodicalId":292389,"journal":{"name":"2008 Third International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"25 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114130141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It relies on the extraction of distinctive invariant image features that can be used to find the correspondence between different views of an object or a scene. These features are invariant to image rotation and scaling, they have substantial robustness to changes in viewpoint and illumination and addition of noise. Mikolajczyk [1] have evaluated the SIFT [2] algorithm along with other approaches and have identified it as the most resistant to image distortions. This paper improves on the SIFT algorithm by modifying its descriptor and the keypoint localization steps. The proposed technique uses the salient aspects of image gradient in keypoints neighbourhood. Moreover, instead of smoothed weighted histograms of SIFT, kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is applied in order to normalize the image patch. Comparative results show that KPCA based descriptors are more distinctive, robust to distortions and compact. The evaluation of the technique is performed using recall precision [3].","PeriodicalId":292389,"journal":{"name":"2008 Third International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127769025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This recommender is fully based on ontologies, which are used to formalize both the user and her/his interests, and the audiovisual content. The developed ontologies allow matchmaking between user and content at different levels, based on three means to define user interests: according to categories, content description, or any combination of concepts defined in an ontology. The computation of user profiles relies on both explicit and implicit profiling, based on incremental learning of interest degrees from content usage.","PeriodicalId":292389,"journal":{"name":"2008 Third International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133372256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that more and more consumers will be over 60 years of age in the near future. Independent living is probably something most people have taken for granted during most of their life. As people become older though, independent living can present more of a challenge. Thus, the provision of in-home services will assist aged people in carrying out their daily tasks. However, this adaptation process misses the time elapsed since the user has bought an item, which is an essential parameter that affects differently to each purchased product. This results in some useless recommendations, including regularly items that the users are only willing to buy sporadically. In this paper, we explore a new recommendation strategy that offers time-aware suggestions to e-commerce users, by enhancing reasoning techniques from the Semantic Web with item-dependent time functions. This combination leads to suggestions adapted to the particular needs of each user at any given moment.","PeriodicalId":292389,"journal":{"name":"2008 Third International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131507337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large volume of research has been conducted for automatic semantic event detection and summarization of sports videos. In this paper we present a novel sports video summarization framework using a combination of text, video and logic analysis. Parse trees are used to analyze structured and free-style text webcasting of sports games and extract the game¿s semantic events, such as goals and penalties in soccer games. Semantic events are then hierarchically arranged before being passed to a logic processing engine. The logic engine receives the summary preferences from the user and subsequently parses the event hierarchy to generate the game¿s summary according to the user¿s preferences. The proposed framework was applied to both soccer and basketball videos. We achieved an average accuracy of 98.6% and 100% on soccer and basketball videos, respectively.","PeriodicalId":292389,"journal":{"name":"2008 Third International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115218558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
