M 30 Grade concrete was designed as per specific national specifications. Steel slag was used to replace natural sand in the range of 0– 50%. It was observed that the steel slag blended concrete with up to 50% substitution exhibited a comparable compressive and flexural strength when compared to the control specimens. From the Dorry’s abrasion test, it was noted that the specimens could be implemented in heavy-duty floor tiles and even extended to pavement construction. The shrinkage strains, water permeability, and carbonation of steel slag blended concrete were observed to be increasing with increasing replacement amounts of steel slag in the place of natural fine aggregates. The concrete containing steel slag replacing up to 40% of natural fine aggregates can be recommended for all heavy load involving structural applications, and substitution levels beyond 40% could be recommended for non-structural applications, pavements, etc.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116885537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For conventional methods i.e Allowable Stress Design (ASD) Method, the factor of safety is applied only to resistance and loads are considered without variations. For LRFD method, factor of safeties are applied for both load and resistance. Due to availability of large statistical data and economy, this method is preferred. An attempt is made to solve one numerical example of geosynthetic RS walls due to soil selfweight plus permanent uniform surcharge using LRFD as well as other conventional methods (ASD) viz. FHWA, Modified Rankine, NCMA and B.S Code Methods and the results of the LRFD methods are compared with conventional design methods and concluding remarks are presented. The various equations are obtained based on various curves plotted by using ASD and LRFD approaches. From these equations it is clear that if FOS against tensile rupture is known for any RS wall having 7m height and same properties and environmental conditions as mentioned in current study then FOS against pullout failure and pullout capacity can be computed for these walls.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125852258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, because standard structures were not considered, direct comparison of different control strategies was not possible. To compare the results of passive, active and semi-active protective systems, and to direct future research efforts towards the most promising control strategies for alleviating dynamic responses, benchmark control problems on buildings and bridges have been developed . Thus, it becomes possible to study different aspects of the same problem in many countries, and in a coordinated fashion. By applying different control strategies to the testbed, and measuring the response to standardized loading, it is possible to directly compare the effectiveness of various control strategies. Findings of the studies can be combined in a rational manner that will result in a systematic presentation of results. The paper presents a review of the benchmark problems in structural engineering. Importance and need of benchmark problems is emphasized by presenting case studies on benchmark buildings and bridges.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130327315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The displacement field of the theory contains three variables. The hyperbolic sine and cosine function is used in the displacement field in terms of thickness coordinate to represent the effect of shear deformation. The most important feature of the theory is that the transverse shear stresses can be obtained directly from the use of constitutive relations, satisfying the stress free boundary conditions at top and bottom surfaces of the plate. Hence, the theory eliminates the need of shear correction factor. Governing differential equations and boundary conditions of the theory are obtained using the principle of virtual work. Results obtained for bending analysis of isotropic plates subjected to linear thermal load are compared with those of other higher order theories, lower order theories to validate the accuracy of the present theory.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121583394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The test beds were subjected to transverse loading by a rigid strip footing. Footing load and footing settlement on the fill surface have been measured during the tests. The influence of GBS and natural sand layer on the overall performance of the system has been systematically studied through a series of tests. The test results indicate that with the provision of GBS and natural sand in soft clay a substantial improvement can be obtained in terms of increase in the bearing capacity ratio and reduction in the footing settlement. 89% and 114 % increase in the bearing capacity of the strip footing can be obtained by laying the GBS and natural sand layer respectively above the soft clay. As compared to GBS bed only 14 % increase in bearing capacity observed of the sand bed overlay on soft clay.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128350117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The clayey soil is not suitable for subgrade due to its swelling characteristics. The soil having more liquid limit (LL), lower Maximum dry density (MDD) and higher Optimum moisture content (OMC) is suitable for subgrade of road. The clayey soil having more LL, lower MDD and higher OMC. Therefore clayey soil is not suitable as subgrade soil of roads. This paper deals with stabilization of clayey soil by using fly ash and RBI Grade 81 to improve the geotechnical properties of soil. The fly ash is a thermal waste and RBI Grade 81 is a chemical soil stabilizer. In the laboratory standard Proctor test (SPT), Atterbergs limits and differential free swelling index (DFS) test for different proportions of soil, fly ash and RBI Grade 81conducted. The results show that, the LL, MDD, OMC and DFS index of clayey soil improved considerably. The LL of untreated soil is 67% and it reduces to 46% for mix of soil: fly ash: RBI Grade 81 for 76:20:04 proportion. The DFS of untreated soil is 65% and it reduces to 40% for addition of fly ash and RBI Grade 81.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134339610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study is mainly concerned with the changing trend of rainfall over Nethravathi river basin, located in coastal region of Karnataka state. Nethravathi river originates in the peaks of western ghats and flows towards westwards. The climate over the basin is humid and has large elevation difference varying from 0 to 1400 m above msl. Precipitation trend analysis based on elevation, rain gauge stations were grouped into two regions with similar precipitation characteristics to perform a regional analysis. Daily rainfall data of 40 years from 1971 to 2010 has been processed in the study to find out the monthly variability of south west monsoon (June, July, August, and September) season. Mann-Kendall (MK) test and Sens’s slope estimator has been used to determine trend and slope magnitude. Long-term analysis (1971 to 2010) was carried out for both regions and results have been compared. Monthly precipitation trend has been identified here to accomplish the objective which shows 40 years of data. From the analysis, it is found that there are decreasing trend of precipitation in some months and increasing trend in some other months. The statistical tests which are used in the study are indicative of overall changes in precipitation trend during the south west monsoon.","PeriodicalId":291974,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Technology in Civil Engineering","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132128759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Steel in this form is more easily delivered from the steel mill to the manufacturing plant where it is usually coldrolled into open and closed section members. The present experimental study is on the effect of infilled Normal Concrete and Geopolymer concrete only at the joints in cold formed tubular sections and which may increase the load carrying capacity of the joints. In present study strength of the joint is increased by infilling different grades of concrete in the tubular specimens the joints with single number of bolts at the connection.
