Normally, this kind of module follows a traditional specification, which defines and describes a huge number of available functionalities. As a result, the creation of a methodology to ensure quality and robustness, regarding such an implementation, is of paramount importance. This paper addresses the mentioned problem and proposes an automated test environment, which provides conformance test scenarios for middleware implementations.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131619723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that such a virtual environment can be used for initial training to introduce tasks to new employees, but also experts may benefit from advanced training in case of new products, or new assembly routines. Consequently, this application was validated twice. First, in a lab pilot study showing that the simple interactions and helpful instructions were appreciated by the participants. Second, professionals from industry were asked to perform the task and to evaluate the usefulness of the virtual learning environment considering its industrial applicability. Based on the achieved scores in common evaluative questionnaires and the post-study interviews, both, the lab pilot and the industrial study, have performed well and will be further developed in close collaboration with the industrial partner.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134084207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The very distinctive nature of FPGAs enables reconfigurability, scalability and adaptivity of the associated embedded design which makes it a remarkable alternative to traditional hardware. An FPGA is able to dynamically reconfigure itself during run-time, entirely or partially, by way of unloading and loading bitstreams. In this paper, an approach is introduced to analyze and inspect FPGA bitstreams by making use of supervised machine learning. By exploiting machine learning, we demonstrate how neural networks can be trained to identify and trace a certain hardware module or an IP core (Intellectual Property core) with some known functionality in FPGA bitstreams. We perform an analysis of FPGA bitstreams by incorporating Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) based classification ranging from Multiple Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) or to modern Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs).","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"518 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133698550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose to add a buffer cache, to hold the reduced swap-out traffic, which gives a new opportunity to further extend the lifetime. This paper also introduces dynamic buffer management models, which intelligently control the size of buffer cache based on system-wide memory conditions and the efficiency of data compression. Experimental results on real Smart TV show that having a buffer cache with well-defined threshold value can improve the lifetime. The results also show that our dynamic buffer management models can effectively shrink the buffer cache even under unexpected environmental changes, resulting in significantly improving the lifetime compared to static threshold-based model.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114827740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among those technologies, Long Range (LoRa) stands out and is actively being deployed worldwide. The key to its wide-spread is that it is designed from bottom up to optimize battery lifetime, capacity, long communication range and cost. Hence, this makes LoRaWAN an excellent choice for a massive portion of IoT applications deployed in smart cities. LoRaWAN adopts a fairly simple Aloha-Like MAC protocol which simplifies the network operation and preserves battery lifetime. However, the un-synchronized transmission fashion degrades the network throughput as the traffic load increases. Therefore, we investigate the performance and limitations of using a more advanced MAC protocol such as CSMA. We ran several simulation campaigns. First, conventional LoRaWAN network performance is analyzed. Then, introducing a new aspect to the proposition of CSMA in LoRa networks, we inspect the limitations of an end-device’s sensing range upon the development of the suggested CSMA/CA variant. Finally, we examine the network performance enhancement experienced when using a more advanced protocol such as CSMA for several realistic smart cities IoT applications deployment.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114473904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the transmission gain S21 of human forearm is regarded as the biometric trait. For this purpose, three different forearm models were established and proposed to validate the aforementioned approach. Furthermore, the transmission gain S21 of 21 volunteers was obtained by the use of vector network analyzer (VNA) in the frequency range 0.3 MHz to 1500 MHz in the experiment. In addition, the convolutional neural network (CNN) which includes 3 convolution layers, 3 max pooling layers and 2 fully-connected layers was adopted in this paper. The influences of different optimizers and loss functions on CNN were investigated. The results showed that the recognition accuracy of CNN was 99.86% when the optimizer was set as Adadelta and the loss function was set as categorical crossentropy. We therefore suggest that the CNN has potentials to improve the recognition accuracy of biometric verification based on HBC.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129778925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A video streaming application is studied, which receives a high-resolution and high-quality video stream from a remote server and displays the content to the end-user. We show that the resolution of the input video can be adjusted such that the quality-power trade-off is optimized. Making use of a power model from the literature and subjective quality evaluation using a perceptual metric, we derive optimal combinations of the scaling factor and the rate-control parameter for encoding. For HD sequences, up to 10% of power can be saved at negligible quality losses and up to 15% of power can be saved at tolerable distortions. To show general validity, the method was tested for Wi-Fi and a mobile network as well as for two different smartphones.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127616181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continuous adjustment of the headlamps is very important for the correct illumination of the road and prevention of blinding the oncoming traffic, respectively. Hence, a great share of new vehicles possess an automatic headlight adjustment. In some countries, like Germany, these systems are legally required for some kinds of headlights. Nevertheless, there are only a few suppliers for aftermarket products and thus, the product range of automatic headlamp adjustment systems for existing vehicles is low. This paper presents a system concept for the aftermarket that is modular designed and easy to integrate in existing vehicles. In addition, the concept includes a novel approach by the application of a smart tire pressure monitoring system for the detection of the tilt angle of the vehicle. Therefore, consumers who like to change their light technology (e.g. LED instead of halogen headlights) and to integrate a system for headlight adjustment can benefit from the system shown in this paper.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128357384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Update is the weak point that could be exploited by potential attackers to gain access to the system, sabotage it or to simply steal someone else's intellectual property. This paper presents an implementation of secure update process for embedded systems which prevents man-in-the-middle attacks. By using a combination of hash functions, symmetric and asymmetric encryption algorithms it demonstrates how to achieve integrity, authenticity and confidentiality of the update package that is sent to the target hardware. It covers implementation starting from key exchange, next explaining update package encryption process and then decryption on the target hardware. It does not go into a detail about specific encryption algorithms that could be used. It presents a generalized model for secure update that could be adjusted to specific needs.","PeriodicalId":290753,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 9th International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114930302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
