It uses cooperative beamforming with multiple distributed relays to avoid use of interference cancellation at the user terminals. An approximate expression is derived for its outage performance. The protocol is shown to be power efficient, besides leading to increase in coverage area. Computer simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the protocol, and to validate the analytical expressions.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128454204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The next evolution of the firewall has to combine dynamic policy-based security with performance, rapid scaling, high availability and application intelligence. Today, increasing attention is paid to network firewall design quality due to regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley act, CobiT framework, the Payment-Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and the NIST standard. All these regulations include specific sections dealing with firewall configuration, management and audit. This paper is a humble attempt to examine various types of firewalls operational as on today and cross reference each firewall operation with causes and effects of weaknesses in their operation. In addition, we analyze reported problems with existing firewalls. Detailed analysis and comparison is done in terms of cost, security, operational ease and implementation of Open source packet filter (PF) firewall, Checkpoint SPLAT and Cisco ASA in a testing environment with laboratory generated traffic. Various throughputs and connections statistics were used as benchmark for performance comparison. The results indicated that Cisco ASA outperforms its peers in most performance criterions. Checkpoint SPLAT and OpenBSD PF also provides reasonably good and competitive performance. The results reported in this paper will also be useful in comparing vendors to procure firewall based on one's own organizational business requirements.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130514214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More precisely Forward Error Correcting (FEC) and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) technique are studied for a square grid WSN. ARQ scheme is compared with FEC scheme in terms of Packet Error Rate (PER), energy efficiency and total energy spent to communicate packetized data. The impact of node spatial density and packet lengths on energy efficiency and energy expenditure is discussed. Further an optimum FEC scheme with the maximal energy efficiency for a given node spatial density and packet size is evaluated. The impact of node spatial density and packet length on optimal error correcting capability is indicated. The primary goal of any distribution system is to supply reliable and quality power to the consumers economically. Therefore reliability indices like system average interruption duration index (SAIDI), customer average interruption duration index (CAIDI), average service availability index (ASAI) and voltage stability index are the important performance indices of a distribution system which need to be satisfied from the customer point of view. The edifice of distribution system automation is fast and reliable communication control technologies leading to reliable power delivery to the customers. Also the ever expanding power demand is increasing the complexity of power system, necessitating highly reliable, secure and efficient distribution system. An attempt has been made in this paper to assess the impact on reliability due to automatic feeder reconfiguration for smart distribution purposes.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132079799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we present a novel integrated solution for health care monitoring system specially for heart beat variability (HBV). Both sensing and communication is based on the Frequency Modulated Ultra Wide Band technology. Moreover, we showed the mathematical analysis of the sensing signal which directly gives the heart's beat frequency at the sensing receiver's end and finally, this value is communicated to the other end like medical repository, etc. Error in measurement of heart movement is calculated for our complete integrated system, as it is expected, FM-UWB monitoring and communication system, gives low error in heart movement measurement even for low SNR value. Henceforth, we can say that our proposed system could work with lower power level compared with other Ultra Wideband systems.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127859068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To find an effective and an efficient routing protocol, which is used to transmit information from source to destination across whole network topology, is a major issue in networking research. The broadcasting is used to diffuse information among all the neighbors and thus route establishment. This approach makes it challenging to control redundant rebroadcasts, channel contention problem, bandwidth congestion and packet collision problem. The optimization of communication with mobile routers in dynamic nature of topology is another challenge. This paper presents classification of routing protocols with different broadcasting schemes. These schemes are summarized and presented in a table.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126307856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental noise also affects human-to-human or human-to-machine communications and degrades the speech quality as well as intelligibility. Here a speech recognition system is proposed in presence of noisy environment. Database of ten Hindi digits was prepared for fifty speakers. Speech and F16 noises were added to clean database to make the noisy database at different Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) levels (-5dB, 0dB, 5dB, 10dB). Spectral estimation techniques like Spectral Subtraction (SS) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) estimation based methods were used for de-noising the speech before feature extraction. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) were used as feature extraction technique and classifier respectively. Multi-band SS de-noising approach has shown best recognition results as compared to all other techniques for both types of noises.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121718042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this modulation scheme is seldom used in practice due to the high computational complexity involved in decoding the received signal in the presence of noise. The basic aim of this paper is to reduce this decoding complexity. Here, we propose a low complexity detection algorithm which makes use of maximum likelihood (ML) decoding not over the entire signal constellation but over a proper subset of the constellation that lies on a hypersphere thereby reducing the computational complexity for decoding. Computational complexity has been evaluated for various values of transmitted power and the result has been plotted for both ML detection algorithm and the proposed algorithm at a fixed data rate. The BER performance for both the algorithms has also been compared at a fixed data rate and the result has been plotted. The results show that the proposed algorithm is far superior to ML detection algorithm in terms of computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":290448,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Devices and Communications (ICDeCom)","volume":"4683 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127787263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
