Derived from this practice, the great advantage of enabling the biogas production, clean and sustainable energy, through sludge hydrolysis. However, one of the main limitations of this technology is the resistance to degradation of microbial cells present in this sludge. These cells often contain complex carbohydrates resistant to biodegradation, making the hydrolysis step slower compared to the other steps. In this sense, a series of technologies and methods are available for the pre-treatment of sludge, aiming to overcome these difficulties. Technical aspects and qualitative comparison of these techniques, discussed in this work, show that, in order to select the best pre-treatment technology, important variables such as availability of operational labor and sludge constitution should be taken into account. Some disadvantages associated with these technologies were also identified, such as high energy consumption and excessive degradation with biodegradable substrate loss. Thus, the authors conclude that the mixture of processes and the use of alternative energy sources are potential ways to make pretreatment techniques viable. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo elaborar e parametrizar um modelo de rede, bem como realizar simulações hidráulicas para diferentes cenários, tanto para consumos médios atuais como para os consumos máximos, considerando o cenário de 2019 e futuros com variação populacional para uma rede sem monitoramento. Tais simulações têm o intuito de identificar zonas de pressões, velocidade e perda de carga nas tubulações que estão em desacordo com a norma brasileira (NBR) 12.218:2017 e Normas Técnicas da Companhia de Água e Esgoto do Ceará (CAGECE). O estudo de caso foi realizado na rede de abastecimento de água da área urbana do município de Crateús, localizado na região oeste do estado do Ceará, para o atendimento de 58.636 habitantes com consumo per capita de 150 L/hab/dia. A modelagem da rede foi elaborada por meio do módulo UFC2, com a interface gráfica do software AutoCad, e a simulação hidráulica com o software EPANET 2.0. Aisse","doi":"10.5327/276455760201005","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5327/276455760201005","url":null,"abstract":"Thermal drying of the sludge produced in sewage treatment plants (STPs) is a physical process that allows for a significant reduction of the moisture intrinsic to the material, reducing its mass and volume for handling and final disposal. The process also allows for thermal sanitization of the sludge, dispensing the use of chemical products for that purpose. A fundamental requirement for the operationalization of the process is the availability of heat, which can be obtained, for example, through the energy recovery of biogas and the dry sludge found in STPs, corroborating with the concepts of sustainability, renewable energy and circular economy. Although thermal sludge drying is already consolidated in several countries, it is still not a common practice in Brazil. Therefore, this technical note presents the main topics of interest associated with drying and thermal sanitation of sludge for STPs of different sizes, as well as a review of the fundamentals inherent to the process and the methods for selection of dryers. The use of nature-based solutions (NBS) for greywater treatment can contribute to the mitigation of heat and low relative humidity in urban areas. Thus, the goal of this technical note is to present the performance of constructed wetlands, a NBS, with respect to the main parameters of national and international standards considering water reuse, and to assess the suitability of the treated effluent for different reuse purposes. Design examples and a flowchart are presented to support the decision-making process, addressing aspects from the characterization of greywater until choosing an application for the recovered water. Essa análise contribui no planejamento, para que o dimensionamento e instalação dos sistemas de infiltração sejam feitos para locais que apresentem condições de recebê-los. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar áreas propícias à instalação de sistemas de infiltração para a minimização de alagamentos na bacia hidrográfica do rio Belém, no município de Curitiba, Paraná. Para cumprir esse objetivo, identificaram-se as áreas livres na bacia hidrográfica que pudessem receber tais estruturas de infiltração, levantaram-se as características que influenciam na infiltração das águas e aplicaram-se técnicas de geoprocessamento, com o auxílio do software ArcGis 10.5, para a determinação de áreas propícias para a instalação dos sistemas. Com a aplicação do método, pode-se observar que as principais áreas para aplicação de sistemas de infiltração das águas de chuva ficam na porção norte da bacia hidrográfica do rio Belém. Essa região foi considerada a mais propícia principalmente pela presença de solo e subsolo com maior permeabilidade do que outras áreas da bacia estudada. Também se percebeu que a implantação em outras áreas, por exemplo, nas regiões mais próximas da foz, não teria tanta efetividade para o estímulo da infiltração, principalmente em razão das condições do solo e declividade. In addition, part of the hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) generated in the process also remains dissolved in the sewage, being easily released and causing routine problems with bad odors and corrosion. Different technologies have been explored in the literature for the removal of dissolved gases, as detailed in this Collection of Technical Notes (TN). This TN aims to present the use of vacuum degasification reactors for recovery of CH4 and H2 S dissolved in effluents from anaerobically treated municipal wastewater. Although carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions from the decomposition of organic matter are considered neutral, sewage treatment by means of anaerobic process stands out for producing methane (CH4 ), an important GHG included in the carbon footprint concept. Thus, the proper management of gaseous emissions, whether through control and treatment, or through the use of biogas energy, consists of an important mechanism to mitigate, compensate or avoid GHG emissions. To make it easier to estimate the carbon footprint and the recovery energy potential, this technical note (TN) presents an electronic tool that includes the gaseous emissions control techniques addressed in this collection of TN. Chernicharo","doi":"10.5327/276455760102006","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5327/276455760102006","url":null,"abstract":"The techniques for controlling gaseous emissions in anaerobic-based STPs studied in this collection of Technical Notes (TNs) are based on the desorption principle of dissolved gases (e.g. CH4 and H2 S) in anaerobic effuent, through their transfer to a waste gas. The waste gas must be properly managed, for example through its degradation/ oxidation in biofilters (TN 5). This TN considers other approaches to manage the waste gas: (i) its energetic use mixed with biogas; and (ii) its use as a comburent in the burning of biogas. Through mathematical models, the operating conditions of the desorption systems required for both options were established. For option (i), values of the gas / liquid ratio (QG /QL in the desorption system) in the range of 0.03-0.10 are necessary, leading to an increase in the energetic potential in the range of 18 to 58%.
