However, despite the benefits to soil and plants, as well as the sustainable appeal, the agricultural use of biosolids in Brazil is still not widespread. In this Technical Note (TN), the objective is to present some Brazilian experiences with biosolids in the light of relevant legislation, as well as to discuss aspects and potential related uses. Paraná and São Paulo states are the main references in agricultural use, with experiences of sanitization with alkaline stabilization and composting. In this TN the criteria for the use of biosolids are presented, according to the new CONAMA Resolution 498/2020, as well as the challenges related to the agricultural sector and public acceptance. However, in order to validate this practice, it is necessary to know, at a minimum, the amount of biogas available for use and, subsequently, compare it with the amount required for a given energy recovery system. In a sense, the analysis of measurements is extremely relevant to the decision making process of the energy use of biogas in STPs. However, these analyzes are often not feasible due to the high cost of measurement equipment. In these cases, decisions need to be based on mathematical models of estimates. Thus, this technical note aims to present a software for estimating biogas production in UASB reactors - ProBio 2.0. For most of those, a rigorous sludge management is needed. In this case, the use of sponge-based packing media in biofilm systems tends to significantly contribute to the minimization of sludge production and effluent quality improvement. Endogenous respiration and predation are important mechanistic processes explaining such improvements, which is related with the increase of the sludge retention time by the retention of biomass within the sponge. Depending on the operational condition, nitrogen removal is also observed in addition to the notorious performance for organic matter removal. Considering the advances for the post-treatment of anaerobic effluents with the use of sponge-based biofilm systems, this Technical Note aim to present: (i) fundamentals of biofilm systems using polyurethane sponge as support media; (ii) full-scale experiences with emerging sponge-based technologies; (iii) performance of sponge-based biofilm systems and operational conditions usually practiced; (iv) a preliminary critical analysis regarding implementation and operational costs; (v) advantages and disadvantages. Rebelo","doi":"10.5327/276455760302005","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5327/276455760302005","url":null,"abstract":"Mais de 50% da população vive em cidades e enfrenta fatores de estresse que afetam a saúde, tais como elevados níveis de poluição e ruído, tendo como consequências comuns problemas cardiovasculares e circulatórios, obesidade, estresse, entre outros. O acesso a zonas verdes e azuis — zonas com a presença de vegetação e água —, onde são oferecidos valores naturais, como a biodiversidade e a presença de água, tem merecido atenção e estudo. A investigação tem permitido validar a relação entre as características naturais e a melhoria da saúde e o bem-estar da população, comprovando-se, por exemplo, que a presença de corpos de água tem benefícios para a saúde mental. Este trabalho baseou-se em informações recolhidas em stakeholders e na pesquisa na plataforma Cordis, que congrega resultados de projetos europeus financiados. Fez-se ainda uma revisão da literatura publicada entre 2019 e 2022, usando os termos “nature based solutions” e “guidelines”, tendo-se analisado 20 artigos representativos. Os resultados validam que as soluções de base natural (SBN) são do maior interesse para a sustentabilidade ambiental e social das cidades e comunidades, para a resiliência às alterações climáticas, para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar e, ainda, para promover serviços de ecossistemas. Problems related to odor, corrosion, occupational risks, energy losses, and even to greenhouse effect, are still a reality. The problems related to the energetic use of biogas from UASB reactors are mainly associated with the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and humidity, as well as fugitive biogas emissions, which make it difficult to accurately estimate biogas production. In this sense, this Technical Note (TN) aims at addressing the main aspects related to biogas production estimate and biogas treatment in STPs with UASB reactors. This contribution derives from the experience of experts and professionals of the academic and water utility sectors, as well as from the specialized literature. The topics of interest are summarized in this TN, the first of this collection, “Valoration and management of gaseous by-products of sewage treatment.
