Interference becomes a serious problem when two or more layers are considered in the same network. For this purpose, power control in the downlink needs to be used to limit the interference and to fully exploit the benefits of additional layer deployments. We present an analytical framework to the common rate maximization problem both with and without maximum power constraints and propose a heuristic algorithm. We present simulation results for the proposed approaches in a two-layer network setup and observe a significant common rate increase compared to single-layer wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123338689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To avoid the high reaffiliation rate produced by nodes moving in opposite directions, the proposed approach uses a threshold for stability estimation of mobile neighbours, resulting in a high accurate division of the scenario for cluster formation. In addition, the proposed algorithm increases the reliability of clusterhead selection in the joining process by using a cooperative approach based in neighbour list comparisons. Although the defined relative mobility metric described by the well-knwon MOBIC algorithm is used to assess mobility, moblist corrects this value by taking into account distance between nodes. Simulation results show that moblist considerably increases the cluster stability w.r.t. MOBIC in terms of residence time of nodes in clusters and reduccion in the number of affiliations.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124034796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is not true in reality, since the communication range is in practice function of the packet length. As a consequence, a substantial discrepancy may exist between analytical and empirical results offered in beaconless geo-routing literature. Furthermore, performance of beaconless geo-routing protocols has typically considered using single-hop metrics only. End-to-end performance is considered in literature only occasionally and mainly in terms of simulation only. In this paper, we re-examine this class of protocols. We first incorporate practical packet detection models in order to capture the dependency of the communication range on the packet's length. We then develop a detailed analytical framework for the end-to-end delay and energy performance of beaconless geo-routing protocols. Finally, we present two different application scenarios and study various tradeoffs in light of the framework developed.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122380979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, a key technology which can allow high quality-of-service provisioning with reasonable energy expenditures is given by the deployment of Coordinated Multi-point (CoMP) transmissions for small cells. While the benefits of CoMP have been explored in the literature, little has been done to study how a network can adaptively decide on whether or not to adopt CoMP. To this end, in this paper, we propose a cooperative framework for small cell networks, in which groups of small cells dynamically decide when to perform CoMP transmission while optimizing the tradeoff between rate improvement and energy consumption. We formulate the problem as a dynamic coalitional game with the small base stations as players, and we provide a distributed algorithm that allows the small cells to self-organize into CoMP-based coalitions. The resulting network partition represents the ϵ-core of the game, which is a key solution concept for dynamic coalition games. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic coalition formation algorithm leads to a significant gain of up to 41% sum rate to transmit power ratio in the small cell tier.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"261 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129279293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this backhaul scheme, base stations cooperatively serve the cell edge users in order to improve their performance. In cooperative uplink, both cooperating BS and serving BS receive signal from cell edge users, the cooperating BS decodes cell edge users firstly, and sends the syndrome coded re-modulated signal to serving cell, the serving BS uses directly received signal as side information and combines syndrome coded signal to decode interference user jointly, then cancels the interference user signal. Our simulation shows that direct decoding without interference cancellation does not work when SINR drop to a certain threshold, at this time, interference cancellation with DSC can improve performance significantly, and the distributed source coding scheme reduces the backhaul overhead dramatically.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130768447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We discuss how both types of CDNs complement each other in tackling the posed technical and commercial challenges. We also show which performance metrics such as quality of experience (QoE) and time to first byte (TTFB) best capture the dynamics of traffic and services in CDNs. The core of this paper is our proposed network architecture for CDN providers/operators. The architecture combines video multicast optimized trees and cross-layer coordination between the physical DWDM layer (L1) and network layer (L3) for achieving higher efficiency and lower latency values for live streaming and on demand (VoD) video. Due to the pilot implementation of the presented concept being limited in scale, we use simulations in order to perform proof-of-concept on a sufficiently large environment. Results show that there is a strong correlation between the TTFB and QoE metrics with the former taking on values as low as 75 msec in a national 3-tier network.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131193069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially in the context of Video on Demand (VOD), content and network providers have to deal with the dynamics of network and server loads which can severely impair the services provided to end users. Our recent research efforts seek to provide a remedy for this issue by introducing an autonomic framework for optimal network resource utilization that allows content and network providers to cooperate, and take into account aspects of the network state as well as server loads while optimizing the services for their subscribers. The framework is specified, designed, and implemented in an IPv6 testbed that was setup by the participating partners in the course of a large scale European project. Finally, a scenario realized in this testbed is presented that illustrates the benefits of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129472578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a set of CR nodes with geographical locations and their available channels, our task is to design a coding-based routing protocol, such that the average number of transmissions per packet is minimized. We propose a geographical opportunistic routing protocol where packets are transmitted through a number of temporary destination nodes hop by hop, until they eventually reach destination. In addition, an efficient heuristic coding algorithm is proposed to further improve the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that our protocol can achieve much better performance in terms of lower number of transmissions compared to DSR protocol.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129949693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a little effort has been put into investigating the impact of non-network parameters such as limited battery resources in mobile devices on the VoIP QoE. Battery life which is not long enough to complete VoIP communication session will adversely affect users' QoE. In order to mitigate battery life limitation, this paper proposes VoIP quality adaptation scheme whereby an acceptable quality is maintained by changing video send bitrate in order to conserve power and hence, prolong VoIP communication session. Through experiments, preliminary results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in terms of power saving while maintaining acceptable QoE. The power saving was between 10-30% of the total system power.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131097042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improved methods for differentiating offload and mobility robustness as a function of the UE (User Equipment) mobility are proposed. The suggested solution comprises two key elements, namely enhanced UE MSE (Mobility State Estimation), as well as optimized methods such that high speed users are primarily kept at the macro layer, while the offload to pico cells for low speed users is maximized. The proposed methods are designed as UE autonomous solutions, requiring minimum assistance and signaling from the network. Extensive system level simulations are used to quantify the benefits. Results confirm that the proposed solutions offer improvements in several mobility key performance indicators such as radio link failure, number of handovers, offload to pico layer.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128882727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
