This paradigm aims to increase the level of system automation in which the devices and systems can exchange and share data, facilitating the communication for other industry branches resulting in new services such as smart cities, smart grids etc. This paper introduces the OpenMTC platform a software reference implementation of the ETSI M2M standards including advanced features for machine communication, application integration, remote management and integration with available sensors and actuators. OpenMTC in addition to fostering research and development enables academic and industry researchers to rapidly realize testbeds and demonstrations in the MTC communication area.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131908991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A scheduler at the small cell is proposed in order to minimize the total transmission power subject to quality of service constraints on the users transmission rates. An optimal solution to the resulting nonconvex optimization problem is proposed to reach the optimal value by solving a group of convex problems using a proposed iterative optimal algorithm. Furthermore, the offloading transmission scenario is considered where each user is assigned either to WLAN or LTE and a solution of two steps is proposed. The first step finds the user-to-RAT assignment while the second step allocates the resources to the WLAN and LTE users. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed Multi-RAT scheduling schemes (saving 43% of the total transmission power) compared to the conventional Single-RAT LTE system.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133241342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtual Machine (VM) allocation is one of the challenging tasks in the data center management since user requirements, typically expressed as SLAs, have to be met with the minimum operational expenditure. Despite their huge processing and storage facilities, data centers are among the major contributors of the GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions of the IT services. In this paper, we propose a holistic approach for a large-scale Cloud system where the Cloud services are provisioned by several data centers interconnected over the backbone network. We propose a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation that aims at virtualizing the backbone topology and placing the VMs in data centers with the objective of minimum power consumption. We compare our proposed solution with a benchmark MILP model which selects the closest data centers that can accommodate the user requests taking into account the CPU, memory, and bandwidth capacities of the residing physical hosts. Collected experimental results show the benefit of the proposed management scheme in terms of power consumption, resource utilization, and fairness for medium size data centers.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122212569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasing penetration of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) like devices within the distribution grid are anticipated; however, due to the high cost of PMU installation, their deployment will continue to be selective for the foreseeable future. Previous work has largely focused on achieving full topological observability with (appropriately placed) minimal number of PMUs for a given network. We observe that there typically exist multiple minimal-PMU sets that achieve full observability, affording an additional degree of freedom to select an optimal choice among this set. We define the desired solution as the placement that also achieves best state estimation performance. Accordingly, we propose two approaches - a greedy algorithm and an integer programming method to determine the PMU locations that minimize the mean-squared state estimation error.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116352313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this paper proposes a QoE Architecture for Heterogeneous Multimedia Wireless Networks, called QoEHand. QoEHand extends the Media Independent Handover (MIH)/IEEE 802.21 proposal with QoE-awareness, seamless mobility, dynamic class of service mapping and a set of content adaptation schemes. The proposed solution allows the best connection and considers the QoE needs of mobile clients and available wireless resources in IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.16e service classes. Since it becomes feasible to estimate the PU connections for the Secondary Users (SU) by contacting a trusted database containing the information of Primary Users (PU) traffic, our methods explicitly consider the distribution of SU traffic loads for the sake of load-balancing based on historical statistics of PU traffic. By modeling a M/M/K/L queuing system, we analyze the performance of the SUs competition under the traffic blocking thresholds and queuing delay. In this manner, we derive the number of SU connection can be accommodated simultaneously, thus optimize the frequency channel utilization. We simulate multiple message and users competing for the spectrum white space in CR networks and show that our optimal transmission scheme significantly reduces the energy cost under different traffic blocking constraints.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114724639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The base station (BS) sleeping strategy has become a well-known technique to achieve energy savings by switching off redundant BSs mainly for lightly loaded networks. Besides, introducing renewable energies as alternative power sources becomes a real challenge to network operators. In this paper, we propose a method that reduces the energy consumption of BSs by not only shutting down underutilized BSs but also by optimizing the amounts of energy procured from different retailers (Renewable energy and electricity retailers). We formulate an optimization problem that leads to the maximization of the profit of a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) cellular operator, and at the same time to the minimization of CO2 emissions in green wireless cellular networks without affecting the desired Quality of Service.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114851663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a method that allows to decide whether a pair of unlicensed users can communicate over a licensed spectrum without causing harmful interference at the primary receiver. The proposed solution is fully distributed and is based on opportunistic information acquired via simple CTS/RTS messages exchanged in the system. We show that the solution can be applied when both primary and secondary users are equipped with multiple-antennas. In this way on one side we achieve the coexistence, when possible, of the two kind of users and on the other side, for both of them, we are able to exploit the MIMO paradigm and increase the transmission performance. A result of the proposed scheme is that the access of the secondary nodes, when feasible, is done with transmission powers that are suitably dimensioned in order to not deteriorate the primary users Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR). To show this we provide a mapping of the areas in the transmission space that are most likely to produce high levels of interference at the primary receiver. From these maps the effects of the interference management and the advantages of the spatial diversity can be appreciated.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123687897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
