The solution is based on massive deployment of small cells by leveraging high frequency reuse at high frequency bands in conjunction with a Macrocell. The presence, discovery and usage of the small cells are controlled dynamically by a Macrocell in a master-slave configuration hence they are called Phantom Cells. To realize this concept, a new method of managing the connections between mobile terminals and small cell nodes is introduced. It is achieved by splitting the Control and User (C/U) planes of the radio link. The combination of C/U-plane split and Phantom Cells can achieve high capacity enhancement using small cells at the same time taking into consideration mobility, scalability and flexibility requirements for massive deployment. The advantages of this approach as well as the implementation aspects are described in the paper. Simulations were also conducted to verify the concept and the results show some promising capacity enhancements. The rest of the paper describes the Phantom Cell concept as well as the challenges of deploying small cells in LTE networks.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129244284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impact of large scale network connection disruptions may cause significant costs for service providers and subscribers. In this paper, we develop a novel approach for preventive protection of the network based on a probabilistic model for large-scale failure scenarios. In particular, we aim to develop a scheme to improve uninterrupted delivery of data in the network to provide desired services in case of large-scale failures. We conduct simulations to show the significant reduction in the average number of disrupted connections and network disruption time due to failure.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128834660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A control plane is a key enabling technique for dynamic and intelligent end-to-end path provisioning and recovery in such networks. In this paper, we design and deploy two different control planes for EON. One is based on the Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) / Path Computation Element (PCE) architecture and protocols, and the other one is based on a centralized model extending OpenFlow. We detail the protocol extensions involved in the main functional aspects, and we experimentally validate both control plane approaches in a control plane testbed and compare them in terms of path provisioning latency.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125727138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is work in progress being carried out by the AFI (Autonomic network engineering for the self-managing Future Internet) working group of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). In the first part (a separate paper), we briefly described the AFI GANA (Generic Autonomic Network Architecture) Reference Model for autonomic network engineering, cognition and self-management, and discussed general instantiation issues. In this second part we describe the steps needed to accomplish an instantiation of GANA onto wireless mesh networks - thereby creating an autonomicity-enabled wireless mesh architecture. Additionally, we present an example use case showcasing autonomic cooperative networking.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116672858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scheduling in an efficient way M2M traffic over the existing LTE MAC infrastructure is decisive for the smooth evolution towards an M2M-enabled LTE system. The large number of connecting devices compared to classical LTE terminals, and their vastly diverse quality-of-service requirements, call for the design of new packet scheduling schemes tailored to the M2M paradigm. To this end, we propose low complexity and signaling scheduling policies which periodically grant access to the M2M devices. In particular, we first propose an analytical model for predicting the QoS performance of M2M services when the fixed periodic scheduling algorithm is employed. Next we propose a modification to this scheme, which exploit queueing-dynamics and finally we examine QoS-differentiation issues when devices are grouped into clusters. Interesting performance-complexity trade-offs are exposed. The results of our study may aid the system designer in tuning and optimizing M2M traffic scheduling.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123810048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has the effect that the apertures of a multielement array while fully uncorrelated in the case of deep fading become correlated as scintillation becomes milder. In such cases the diversity effect of the MIMO array may disappear. This phenomenon is investigated, maybe the first time. Based on correlation an effective number of apertures is defined. Outage probability vs. turbulence strength (this characterized by Fried parameter) is determined and formulas for average received SNR vs. turbulence strength are given. It is shown that in arrays of large number of apertures probability of outage is highest in the case of shallowest and not of deepest fading.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124927997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its goal is to maximize the quality of the received video while accounting for the variations of the characteristics of the transmitted content and of the channel. The control problem is cast in the framework of Markov Decision Processes. The optimal actions to apply to the system are learned using reinforcement learning. For that purpose, the quality of the decoded frames at receiver is inferred by an observation (i) of the quality of the various scalability layers and (ii) of the level of queues at the Application and Medium Access Control layers of the transmitter only. Delayed as well as absence of information on the channel state are considered. Experiments show that the performance of the proposed solution is only slightly degraded with delayed or missing channel state information. The performance degradation is larger when considering a basic bitstream extractor, which serves as reference1.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125002006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the fairness among different users, using the game-theoretic diagram, a fair resource allocation scheme is proposed first under each mobile user's minimal rate constraint. Then, an optimal power allocation algorithm is derived based on the Lagrange optimization method. To further improve the convergence speed and reduce the computational complexity, an adaptive scalarization method is proposed. At the end, the persuasive simulation results show that the proposed approach not only enhances the overall system capacity compared with the scheme without power allocation, but also guarantees fairness among all the users.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122659325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Terminals are equipped with both a long range interface, through which they connect to, e.g., a cellular network or satellite system, and a short range interface, which is used to create an ad-hoc capillary network among the terminals. Such a network is intended to enhance coverage by means of properly encoded cooperative transmissions. By applying the max-flow min-cut theorem we derive an analytical lower bound on the coverage as a function of both the information rate at physical layer and the rate of innovative packets per unit-time. Our results give the tradeoff between the coverage and the rate at which the information can be injected in the network, and at the same time quantify the gain derived from cooperation and give hints on how to tune important system parameters.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122811915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microwave emission and backscattering of the beach soil depend on its dielectric property which exhibits dispersion and absorption and is affected by the oil, salt, and moisture content. In this paper, we apply Ultra-WideBand (UWB) radars sensor network to perform the beach soil dielectric property studies due to the oil spill. Data were collected from different beaches in New Orleans. Some beaches were contaminated by oil spill; and some beaches were clean. Extensive data were collected on different beaches based on UWB radars. We obtained the soil reflectivity kernel based on the sending chirps and received echoes for soil, and observed that oil spill has reduced the amplitude of reflectivity kernel.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128107934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
