In particular, we consider deployments based on integrated small cells with co-located WiFi and LTE interfaces, which allow for tighter coordination between the two interfaces especially when used together with WiFi/LTE capable client devices. The paper develops a utility based framework which optimizes the partitioning of users between WiFi and LTE to improve the aggregate per-cell utility. The resulting link assignment framework is applied to take advantage of the orthogonal WiFi carrier to mitigate cross-tier LTE interference between macro-cells and small-cells. Results show that this technique not only improves system capacity and coverage beyond what is achievable with uncoordinated use of WiFi and LTE, but also preserves macro-cell throughput by reducing the need for macro-cells to mute their transmissions in order to avoid cross-tier interference. We also apply the utility-based assignment framework to improve the on-time throughput across users, which measures the average data rate delivered to a user before its delay deadline. This is an important metric to characterize the quality-of-service achievable for transmitting delay sensitive traffic, such as real-time voice and video. Our results show that accounting for delay sensitivity in the optimization can improve the number of users achieving target on-time throughput by up to 3x, when compared with un-coordinated use of WiFi and LTE interfaces.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114215618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although, this approach is beneficial for the sensor nodes, since most of the complexity is delegated to the sink node, it is also the origin of severe bottleneck effects near to sink. Having a large number of sensors trying to forward their data to a single sink node leads to increased traffic intensity, congestion and increased packet loss probabilities. The key point in coping with this problem is the medium access control (MAC) protocols that handle the sensors' traffic, with respect to specific performance optimization criteria. Following the general research trend, which focuses on hybrid contention/reservation MAC protocols, we present a novel hybrid protocol, which decides on the access mode to be used, based on the trade-off between the expected throughput and protocol complexity. The expected throughput can be predicted by exploiting an analytical framework grounded on the queueing theory, which evaluates the performance of both contention based and contention-free access schemes. Extensive system simulation results validate the theoretical derivations and the ability of the proposed hybrid MAC scheme to balance between performance and complexity.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114701785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such scenarios have recently attracted significant attention in 3GPP where an ongoing work item is scheduled to be completed in the LTE Release 11 timeframe. An important focus of this paper is to analyze both the CoMP schemes and the deployment architectures that have been considered in 3GPP. We provide a detailed comparison of benefits and drawbacks for both based on system-level evaluations. Further, CoMP is compared against an eICIC performance baseline which does not rely on tight coordination as in the case of CoMP.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126205355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current systems engineering methodologies are unsuitable, as autonomics is a multi-domain field that requires the knowledge of several domains, such as control-theory, computer networks, software-engineering, etc., and comes with its own set of requirements and challenges. We showcase why and how current systems engineering approaches fail, and advocate for an avant-garde systems engineering approach to designing safety-critical and multidomain systems, such as autonomic entities. In this paper, we introduce a new model-driven systems engineering methodology, called the Rotary Dial Model (RDM), whose functioning is inspired by the standard telephone rotary dial. We describe in detail the working of the RDM model, and showcase its robustness and flexibility for the system design process.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126568881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clearly it is a major challenge to achieve the automation and optimization of network management like virtual resources or QoS to ensure the personalized user satisfaction. In this article, we propose a novel cognitive management architecture to meet the future needs under a heterogeneous network environment. The architecture introduces a cognitive management cycle to the virtual network resources to ensure flexibility. We also focus on the efficient virtual network resource allocation and scheduling algorithms. Based on the complex network centrality analysis, we solve the virtual network resources allocation problem with consideration of the topology structure and statistical analysis. Finally we evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of our algorithm on common benchmarks including the acceptance, revenue and cost.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121744767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under a deterministic system setting, we formulate the power allocation problem as a non-convex optimization problem over a finite horizon taking into account the circuit energy consumption, finite battery storage capacities, and a minimum required data rate. The considered non-convex optimization problem is transformed into a convex optimization problem by exploiting the properties of fractional programming which results in an efficient optimal off-line iterative power allocation algorithm. In each iteration, the transformed problem is solved by using dual decomposition and a recursive power allocation solution is obtained for maximization of the energy efficiency of data transmission (bit/Joule delivered to the receiver).","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131380200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the case that the robot gathers a number of received signal strength (RSS) measurements from a fixed transmitter along its trajectory and use them to estimate the position of the transmitter. We first mathematically characterize two metrics for the estimation performance of the transmitter position: 1) the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and 2) the error covariance matrix of a least square (LS) estimator. We then mathematically analyze the impact of the positions of the channel measurements as well as the underlying channel parameters, such as shadowing power, correlation distance, multipath power, and path loss slope, on each metric individually. Motivated by our analysis, we then utilize a motion planning strategy to improve the estimation quality of the transmitter position. Our simulation results confirm our theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132302879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in MANETs, content retrieval is faced with significant challenges for nodes' high mobility. Information-Centric MANETs (ICMs) are expected to provide benefits, and there are great significance and challenges for realistically modeling content retrieval in ICMs. In this paper, we design an analytical model of content retrieval for ICMs in 1-dimensional case, which considers the nodes mobility, natures of wireless environment and caching in-networking features in ICN. Our model extracts many considerations in a pervasive methodology composed of three basic objects: locations, nodes, and contents. And closed-form expressions for throughput and delay are derived based on the hit/miss probabilities at the mobile nodes. Several simulation experiments are conducted to check the reliability of proposed model. Overall, the results show that this model can be chosen to guide further research and evaluation of optimized ICMs in the future.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130468061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the introduction of MU-MIMO and maximum 160MHz bandwidth transmission, the conventional carrier sensing mechanism emerges some drawbacks especially in the overlapping BSS scenario. In order to address the issue of redundant or useless network allocation vector (NAV) setting, this paper proposes a two-level NAV mechanism which only needs small modification to current standard draft. Theoretical analysis is also performed on the proposed mechanism and the formulas of the achieved gain is derived. Numerical results confirm the validation of our theoretical analysis and show that the proposed scheme obtains obvious throughput gain over the conventional mechanism.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134546059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
