Together they account for more than 30% of the overall Internet's traffic volume and span more than half of the Internet users worldwide. Such popularity has attracted a growing interest from the research community, particularly regarding content characterization, network performance, and privacy issues in these applications. Their extensive and ever-growing usage in cellular networks has also captured the attention of mobile operators, who need to engineer their systems to handle the load while providing good quality levels. In this paper we take a user-centric approach for YouTube and Facebook performance evaluation, analyzing the Quality of Experience (QoE) as assessed by a group of 33 mobile broadband users in a field trial. Spanning an evaluation period of 31 days and using their own 3.5G-connected laptops, users regularly reported their perceived experience on surfing their preferred YouTube and Facebook contents under changing network conditions, artificially modified through traffic shaping. Our approach is holistic and considers a three-layered evaluation methodology, including control and monitoring of the network-layer QoS, content monitoring at the network and application layers, and QoE assessment at the user-layer. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first results on the evaluation of different 3.5G network conditions on YouTube and Facebook from the enduser perspective, considering everyday life Web usage scenarios.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122823523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

C-RAN could be one of direction of future mobile infrastructure, however, to achieve the goal of C-RAN is quite challenging, since it's domain specific cloud computing technology, in which real-time processing and huge amount of antenna data make it more difficult than traditional cloud computing. In the paper, together with the load analysis of C-RAN, one of GPP (e.g. x86) based C-RAN architecture is proposed targeted to scalable, large-scale BBU pool. The design philosophy is to efficiently reduce computation cost and power consumption by allocating computation/switch resource fitting the traffic need.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122955680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each tier is characterized by a base-station (BS) arrangement according to a homogeneous Poisson point process with certain density, constant transmission power and random shadow fading factors with arbitrary distribution. The mobile-station (MS) communicates with the BS that has the maximum instantaneous received power among those to which it is allowed access. The chosen BS provides coverage to the MS if the SIR is above a certain threshold determined by the BS's tier. The coverage probability and average rate expressions are derived for the open access scheme for any arbitrary SIR threshold assigned for each tier, and for the closed access scheme when the SIR thresholds are greater than one.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123037173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This affects operational up-time, safety measures and cost effectiveness. This paper proposes the use of an integrated RFID-WSN architecture to reduce the footprint of mining equipment used in the Canadian Oil Sands industry. Sensors and RFID tags provide both identification and positioning data for detecting broken parts from Ground Engaging Tools (GETs), such as huge shovel teeth. A delay-tolerant delivery approach utilizes mobile couriers, placed on loading trucks available in the vicinity, to store and carry data from readers and relays to remote base-stations. Delivering data in such harsh mining environments poses several challenges including power scarcity, vast transmission distances and the lack of an accessible communication infrastructure. We provide a use case to demonstrate how this architecture successfully overcomes these challenges within the harsh industrial environment of the Oil Sands.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114260318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deliberate digital baseband clipping is introduced in the system transmitter in order to reduce a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the OFDM signal and achieve an optimum modulation index of the intensity-modulated (IM) optical signal. In the system receiver a post-detection digital signal restoration is applied in an iterative manner in order to compensate for the effect of clipping noise and improve the system performance. It is emphasized that at the operation of decoding in the process of iterative signal restoration the main mechanism limiting the system performance at small clipping levels of the signal is introduced.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116725569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transferred GP is constructed by combining hyperparameters learned in the original environment with signal measurements collected by an unmanned aircraft (UA) in the new goal environment. The sensors collect ground data at definite time interval and forward it to the sink. In case of an event, it is often required to estimate the affected area and to identify the location of the event. Since, in WSN, communication is costlier than in-network computation in terms of energy, it is better if the area can be estimated in a distributed fashion on the way when sensed data are forwarded to the sink via multi hop paths. In this paper, a light-weight distributed algorithm is proposed to estimate the area as well as to locate its center. Each node requires only the knowledge of its own location and transmits a single packet per round. Simulation studies have been done to evaluate the performance. Comparison with two other algorithms proposed earlier for area computation without localization shows that our algorithm performs better in terms of accuracy of area estimation improving the error percentage from 15% to 2%. Besides area estimation, the proposed procedure also can locate the center of the affected area with less than 1% error.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124653878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are numerous appstores in the world, including Google Play and Amazon Appstore for Android. These appstores with DRM-protection and In-App Purchasing APIs provide various business models to their app developers. However, the APIs and implementations are very different among the appstores. Therefore, accommodating the mobile apps to other appstores may require extra maintenance and porting overheads. This paper proposes a mechanism that supports inter-store transactions to distribute appstore-dependent apps by slightly modifying the appstore client and service logic. Consequently, the app developers can publish their DRM-protected apps and purchasable items in the apps at once to wide markets without rewriting the programs.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123868844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differentiated services are an important monetization technique for content service providers. In over-the-top (OTT) video delivery, client-based CoS enforcement is necessary for federated delivery across multiple operator networks. In this paper, we address the question of how to implement distributed client-based CoS enforcement for OTT video delivery. Our solution integrates CoS-awareness into the client rate adaptation algorithm using segment download aborts to enforce relative bandwidth virtualization. This scheme does not require the client to be aware of other clients in the network or of specific network resource limitations. We compare our distributed approach with manifest-based CoS enforcement and provide simulation results which demonstrate the network utilization advantages of our approach.","PeriodicalId":290330,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123503429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
