The proposed charger is formed from a PFC converter and an asymmetrical half-bridge converter. Coupled inductors are adopted to reduce input current ripple caused by asymmetrical PWM operation, resulting in small input filters: The converter has the features of constant frequency operation, ZVS and low voltage stress imposed on the active switches. Moreover, it can achieve high power factor, high power density, high efficiency, low switching loss and low component count, which make converter operation at medium power levels feasible. In the paper, theoretical analysis and experimental results for a charger with the proposed topology have been obtained, which verify its feasibility.","PeriodicalId":288109,"journal":{"name":"38th IAS Annual Meeting on Conference Record of the Industry Applications Conference, 2003.","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133110276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of dead time on common-mode voltage for inverter control and the associated solution are discussed. Based upon these results, an optimal common-mode voltage reduction PWM technique, which requires no extra voltage/current sensors and compensation mechanism while not being affected by the dead time, is recommended. The common-mode voltage can be reduced to one third for the inverter with diode front end, which is widely used in the industry. Intensive measured results are presented to fully support the claims.","PeriodicalId":288109,"journal":{"name":"38th IAS Annual Meeting on Conference Record of the Industry Applications Conference, 2003.","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117297484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to a series connection of two or three IGCTs and inverse diodes in a three level neutral point clamped voltage source converter 10 kV IGCTs and diodes offer several attractive characteristics such as drastically increased reliability due to a substantially reduced component count, a simpler and more compact mechanical and thermal design and thus reduced converter costs. The design of 10 kV IGCTs as well as the test set up are discussed. Measurements of the blocking-, on-state- and switching behaviour are the basis for a detailed description of the device performance. The technology trade off of 10 kV IGCTs is addressed to enable an application specific optimization of the IGCT design for low and high switching frequency applications (e.g. railway interties and medium voltage drives).","PeriodicalId":288109,"journal":{"name":"38th IAS Annual Meeting on Conference Record of the Industry Applications Conference, 2003.","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116392513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed IDEA is capable of simultaneous generation of optimized green power and improving power quality, which are achieved by canceling the most significant and troublesome harmonics of the utility lines. Power factor correction and reactive power control are the other two significant features of the proposed technology. A sensorless field oriented method to control the IDEA with higher power density is also part of this development. As nonlinear loads increase gradually in industry fields, harmonic current generated in the electric power network system also increases. Harmonic current makes a power network current distorted and generates heat, vibration and noise in the power machinery. Many approaches have been applied to compensate harmonic currents generated in the power system. Among various control strategies, in this paper, a sliding mode controlled system is designed and evaluated. A robust control is realized and implemented. This is a flywheel compensator based on secondary excitation of WRIM (wound rotor induction motor) with SMC (sliding mode controller). The proposed system uses a flywheel as an energy storage device. The designed control scheme is verified through simulation.","PeriodicalId":288109,"journal":{"name":"38th IAS Annual Meeting on Conference Record of the Industry Applications Conference, 2003.","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114917734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MOSFET technological structure is based on a strip geometry layout, which allows an excellent trade-off between the on-resistance and the gate charge in comparison with other technologies. The paper starts with the description of the main technology issues focusing on the innovations and the advantages. Furthermore, a new high current device with an optimized gate charge profile is introduced. The switching behavior of the tested devices in DC-DC converter applications (voltage regulator modules) has been experimentally analyzed, in detail, placing attention on the on-state power losses of the low-side switch, on the spurious turn-on phenomenon that can occur during the switching transients, on the gate driving conditions, and on the extension of load current range through the use of multiphase converters. The efficiency of the converter has been evaluated in order to put in prominence the significant improvement obtained by using the new generation of high-current, low-voltage MOSFETs.","PeriodicalId":288109,"journal":{"name":"38th IAS Annual Meeting on Conference Record of the Industry Applications Conference, 2003.","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123211742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field of applications along with the driver requirement is discussed too. The advantages and drawbacks of the presented device in terms of both switching losses and base-gate command circuitry are compared with those of a MOSFET.
