However, being equipped with MIMO antennas, the design of CR devices poses tremendous challenges. In this paper, antennas requirements as well as the limitations imposed on the system performance are reviewed. Well decoupled and reconfigurable antennas guarantee the flexibility needed during spectrum scanning and data transmission. Nevertheless to achieve the desired performance, many challenges have to be overcome. The different aspects are illustrated by an example of a 4-port MIMO antenna in the frequency range [470, 790] MHz, or the so-called TV white spaces.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125554534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based cognitive LTE downlink scheduler is proposed to allocate radio resources to the users. In the proposed scheme, a network administrator defines high level network policies by setting the operational mode to throughput or fairness and a target threshold for the selected mode. For example, the proposed scheduler dynamically and quickly adapts its decisions to ensure the best fairness among the solutions satisfying the target throughput or the highest throughput if none of the solutions achieves the desired throughput. We implemented a C# based simulation tool and demonstrated the trade-off between the convergence speed and the quality of the solution by varying the parameters of LTE and GA. Numerical results demonstrated that the proposed GA scheduler can be effectively used to manage throughput and fairness objectives in dynamic network scenarios.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122145664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, with their intermittent spectral vacancies, TV white spaces offer a faster deployment potential considered with respect to cognitive radios. In this paper, system design of a high intermediate frequency (IF) to UHF frequency converter for cognitive radios have been discussed and the performance of such a converter analyzed as a proof of concept. For the design of RF front-ends, CR brings forth huge architectural challenges such as in-band local oscillator harmonics, ultra low sensitivity and high linearity. As shown in this paper, a high-IF radio front-end can successfully tackle some of these challenges. Additionally, such a high-IF converter enables white space operation for existing commercial devices by acting as frequency converters. From detailed measurements, the capabilities in both physical layer and application layer performance of a high-IF front-end developed out of off-the-shelf components is explained and is shown to provide negligible degradation to the commercial device being connected to.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122588106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This ability of CRs makes them a feasible choice to achieve green radio networks. CRs perform spectrum sensing, wherein presence and/or absence of licensed users' signals is detected in the wideband input frequency range in order to allow opportunistic access of the vacant frequency bands to unlicensed users. Variable digital filters (VDFs) which can provide frequency responses with variable cutoff frequencies are widely used for spectrum sensing in CRs. In this paper, we propose an energy detector based spectrum sensing scheme which employs such VDFs based on first order all pass transformation and the modified coefficient decimation method. With the help of design example of an air-ground communication scenario, we show that VDFs employed in the proposed scheme are low complexity alternatives to the other relevant VDFs in literature. The proposed spectrum sensing scheme can be useful not only for solving the anticipated spectrum scarcity caused by the existing static spectrum allocation scheme in current air-ground communication systems, but also in achieving energy efficient green communications.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126303473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though spectrum owners, also known as Incumbents, will cooperate with cellular operators in the framework of a Sharing Agreement that is typically set-up for a long-term basis, the LSA concept will in addition, under specific conditions, give Incumbents the opportunity to reclaim spectrum on a per-need basis. Obviously, this new concept for managing spectrum introduces a number of novel challenges, such as vacate in a coordinated manner the LSA bands in case of a corresponding request being triggered by Incumbents, coordinate the LSA spectrum when it is used in proximity to neighbouring countries and/or regulation domains, establish protection zones in which maximum interference levels are guaranteed to Incumbents, etc. This paper gives an overview on the LSA state-of-the-art and elaborates the key challenges to be addressed in the future design of LSA systems.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"115 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128998811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a network where the only source of energy for the secondary system is the RF signals of the primary system resulting in an inter-play between energy harvesting and transmission for the secondary network. We show that an RF energy harvesting cognitive radio using todays technology is suitable for a delay-tolerant sensor network where the nodes need to transmit sensor output values very sporadically. We observe that the interplay between primary user traffic arrival and departure rates as well as probabilities of missed detection and false alarm for the secondary user detector and available battery size is of importance and that a percentile channel occupation of the primary network on its own is not a sufficient metric.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"18 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120894521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is quite a challenging task as it requires finding the balance between prediction accuracy and efficient learning for optimal configuration settings for the CRN. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been widely used as predictive tools in cognitive radio. In this paper, random neural networks (RNNs) have been proposed to achieve better generalization and to speed up the cognition process in LTE (Long Term Evolution) cognitive-eNodeB. The developed CE is characterizing the achievable communication performance (throughput) of available configuration settings and suggesting the optimal radio parameters for specific service demand. Furthermore, the RNN-CE is coordinating the inter-cell-interference by suggesting the acceptable transmit power of adjacent channel users. Performance evaluation has revealed 42.85% better prediction accuracy (based on MSE) and 68% better learning efficiency (based on epochs required for convergent result) of RNN as compared to ANN.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129243011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cognitive radio (CR) context is tackled where a amplify and forward (AF) OFDM-based dual-hop multiple relay system is investigated. The joint allocation of subcarrier pairing, relay selection and power allocation is performed under both interference and individual power constraints where the target is to maximize the achievable data rate of the network. The dual decomposition is adopted to obtain the optimal solution. Two sub-optimal schemes are proposed also to reduce the computational complexity of the optimal scheme. Simulations are presented to compare the performance of the optimal scheme with that of the proposed sub-optimal schemes.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127389510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, not only in the fields of algorithms and digital signal processing, research has to be done. To derive accurate channel models, to conduct field tests and to find realistic spectrum sensing scenarios, testing with air interfaces is inevitable for conducting cognitive radio research. As conventional software defined radios either do not possess the required wide frequency range, the required linearity or the out-of-band rejection to fulfill the specifications, alternative possibilities for air interfaces have to looked into. In this paper, two frequency converters for operation of commercial radio transceivers in the TV White Space are presented. While “whiteLAN” enables the use of standard wireless LAN equipment in the TV white space, “kogHF” enables cellular LTE devices to operate in the TV white space. Both converters are described and their performance is evaluated. The combination of the realized frequency converter and any software-defined radio or any standard transceiver then fulfills the corresponding specifications and spectrum masks while operating in the TV White Space.","PeriodicalId":288065,"journal":{"name":"2014 1st International Workshop on Cognitive Cellular Systems (CCS)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134263703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
