We have also noted that at a deeper level these arisings are nondual i.e. there is in actual experience no separation between the experiencer (‘me’) and the experienced (‘it’ out there). ‘Experience’ shows itself to be questionable, because the very concept of ‘experience’ implies something (separate) that someone (separate) is having. The models of a Möbius Strip and reflection in a mirror are used to clarify nonduality.","PeriodicalId":287880,"journal":{"name":"The Buddha's Path of Peace: A Step-by-Step Guide","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129715888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More accurately, saňkappa means resolving to do x, making up one’s mind to do x, or making a commitment to do x. In this context it means resolving, on the basis of one’s Right Understanding of the Four Noble Truths, to work towards the end of one’s craving and aversion, renouncing (or moderating) worldly attachments, and living in harmlessness and love (good will) toward all sentient beings.","PeriodicalId":287880,"journal":{"name":"The Buddha's Path of Peace: A Step-by-Step Guide","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128347373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 4th Foundation of Mindfulness provides us with the opportunity of evaluating how far we have journeyed between assuming ‘me’ (the discrete self) and letting go of that assumption. This chapter reminds us to be careful: there is not a ‘not-me’ (anattā) which contrasts with ‘me’, for that would make the mistake of assuming ‘not-me’ to be another object on a par with other assumed (conditioned) substantive objects which include ‘me’. Despite the impression given in some quarters there is immediately nothing more to ‘not-me’ than letting go of an independent discrete ‘me’. An analogy with ‘Newton’s Cradle’ is used to clarify.","PeriodicalId":287880,"journal":{"name":"The Buddha's Path of Peace: A Step-by-Step Guide","volume":"772 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117018188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
