These strategies are used to improve the active power filter performance by compensation of the reactive power and the elimination of the harmonic currents drawn by non-linear loads. A theoretical analysis followed by a simulation using Matlab/Simulink software for the studied techniques have been established. Moreover, two tests bench have been carried out using the dSPACE card 1104 for the classic and predictive DPC control in order to evaluate the studied methods in real time. Obtained results are presented and compared in the present paper to confirm the superiority of predictive technique. To overcome the pollution problems caused by the consumption of fossil fuels, renewable energies are the alternatives recommended to ensure green energy. In the same context, the tested predictive filter can be easily supplied by a renewable energy source that will give its impact to enhance the power quality.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122753354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, particularly wind energy, as well as the growing percentage of power electronics-based devices and plants in the electrical supply grid, power quality issues ranging from voltage sags/swells, harmonics and unbalances to short-duration interruptions do pose a great challenge to the supply reliability. This paper investigates a state-based controlled shunt-connected power conditioner, the static synchronous compensator, to support DFIG-based wind energy conversion systems during supply grid voltage sags.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121559093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wind speed data is collected from meteorological measuring station located at 15 meters height above the ground level between 2013 and 2015 and it is recorded at the every 10 minutes. Two parameters Weibull distribution is one of the most used methods to analyze wind speed characteristic of an area. This study aims to compare two different methods which are used to determine parameters of Weibull distribution and evaluate the wind energy potential of Ankara. Comparative analysis of the accuracy of the methods is carried out statistically using Root-Mean Square Error (RMSE) and analysis of variance (R2). In the study, Matlab is used to execute developed scripts based on mathematical models for estimation of Weibull parameters, and perform statistical analyses.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131716765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presented method is able to forecast the PV power one or two hours earlier at the PV generation site. The authors have forecasted and estimated the short period variation of solar radiation by analyzing sky image data as observed by a camera. To establish the forecasting methodology for a short-period variation of the PV power, the variation in solar radiation and cloud movement were estimated using sky image data. In this study, we used the sky image obtained from a camera with a fish-eye lens, a ceilometer (quantity and height of cloud), and a pyranometer installed on the roof of the building in our campus and neighboring areas.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124599124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic model of SERG is developed and utilised to simulate the WDSERG in the MATLAB-Simulink environment. A stochastic wind speed profile is generated using weibull distribution. The excitation capacitance required to maintain the output voltage at a desired level is computed for each wind speed and load. The obtained capacitance value is utilised to provide the required excitation for the self-excited reluctance generator (SERG). Different scenarios of load conditions are considered and an optimal capacitance value is determined and selected for each load cases. The results show that in spite of the variation in wind speed or load, a desired output voltage level within predetermined limits is obtained. This illustrates that variable excitation capacitance can be utilised to follow the wind speed in order to produce a desired output voltage level under any given operating conditions of wind speed and terminal load, within the steady state limits of the SERG. Therefore, this can offer an effective and low-cost solution for output voltage control of WDSERG, particularly in remote locations.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"227 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120878947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there have been many reports about degradation and failure which occur to polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules. Because of these reasons, various diagnosis tools for photovoltaic modules have been invented and introduced; however, the fault mode is hard to determine. Thus, we have been proposing the application of AC impedance spectroscopy, which is widely used to evaluate electrochemical devices, as a diagnosis tool for photovoltaic modules. In this study, we conducted crack test and interconnect ribbon disconnection test to obtain and compare impedance characteristics and I-V characteristics. Equivalent circuit parameters calculated from Nyquist plots as impedance characteristics yielded information to differentiate the fault mode of photovoltaic modules; cracks on photovoltaic modules decrease the parallel resistance and increase the parallel capacitance; interconnect ribbon disconnection increases the series resistance and decreases the parallel resistance. We concluded that AC impedance spectroscopy can detect failures themselves and probably differentiate failure types of photovoltaic modules that cannot be distinguished using I-V characteristics.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123124149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The importance of wind energy topic leads new investigation ranges due to the operation of turbines. The operation of the turbine mainly occurs in the generator. In this study, a MATLAB/GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been developed to compare the differences between the generator types used in wind turbines. The effect of each generator on the grid has been investigated and compared. Commonly used wind turbine generators Permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), double-fed asynchronous generators (DFIG), squirrel cage induction generators (SCIG) and wounded rotor induction generators (WRIG) are considered. The wind turbine models are modelled using MATLAB/ Simulink interface using modelling parameters under the condition of having the same 1.5 MW total installed power. Therefore, the selection of the most suitable generator and the effects of the generator on the grid (FFT analysis results) will be investigated. The user has the option to determine the wind speed, pitch angle and generator parameter values of the simulation.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129727782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stability improvement of large interconnected systems is essential which has been largely studied in AC systems but still under development in DC networks. This paper presents a control strategy to provide support to the grid against disturbance in a HVDC system implemented with a modular multilevel converter (MMC). The main idea behind this work is to replace the classical power controller by a new control strategy, which emulates the characteristics of a synchronous generator. The control proposed is known as Synchronous Power Control (SPC) and it is able to emulate inertia, damping and droop characteristics required by the grid. To validate this work, simulation results are presented in a HVDC-MMC system connected to a weak grid.","PeriodicalId":287863,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129880177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
