A difficult problem to solve, however, is how to separate ambient motion from an actual motion gesture input. In this work, we explore the use of motion gesture data labeled with gesture execution phases for training supervised learning classifiers for gesture segmentation. We believe that using gesture execution phase data can significantly improve the accuracy of gesture segmentation algorithms. We define gesture execution phases as the start, middle and end of each gesture. Since labeling motion gesture data with gesture execution phase information is work intensive, we used crowd workers to perform the labeling. Using this labeled data set, we trained SVM-based classifiers to segment motion gestures from ambient movement of the device. We describe initial results that indicate that gesture execution phase can be accurately recognized by SVM classifiers. Our main results show that training gesture segmentation classifiers with phase-labeled data substantially increases the accuracy of gesture segmentation: we achieved a gesture segmentation accuracy of 0.89 for simulated online segmentation using a sliding window approach.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126437302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such preferences express only extreme ratings, and exploiting implicit feedback is still a challenge. Different solutions exist in literature, but a general one is still lacking. Similarly, the user interface engineering community elaborated patterns and metaphors for supporting users in both inspecting and controlling the internal state of intelligent systems in different domains. The aim of this workshop is to solicit the collaboration between recommendation and user interface experts, in order to discuss novel ideas for engineering the interaction with Recommenders Systems. This workshop solicits contributions in all topics related to engineering Human-Computer Interaction in Recommender Systems, for collecting novel ideas in this field and connecting different researchers and practitioners working in this area.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134232535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Creativity support tools aim at speeding up this exploration for either saving time or exploring more design alternatives. This paper addresses the design of persuasive interactive systems. It provides designers and developers with a conceptual tool for structuring the exploration of the design space. In the vain of the IFIP properties [1] that are largely used in engineering HCI (e.g., observability), SEPIA (Support for Engineering Persuasive Interactive Applications) elicits a set of properties and functions to be considered when engineering persuasive interactive systems. SEPIA is expected to foster creativity and thereby to make people go beyond the classical monitoring feature.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128710365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This workshop marks a shift from thinking about the technical issues of distributed user interfaces to thinking about the users and enabling cross-device use of existing applications and interfaces. We will discuss the issues specific to end-user development of cross-device user interfaces and develop a research agenda that tackles these issues with solutions suitable for non-technical users. We target both new and established researchers in the area---new researchers will quickly get an overview of the state of the art, while established researchers can bring in their expertise and knowledge of existing cross-device techniques.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128764947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, current context-sharing techniques require significant amounts of setup before they can be used, making them cumbersome when devices need to share information once or spontaneously. To address this problem, we present Bluewave, a Bluetooth-based technique that allows devices to opportunistically share context when they are nearby. With Bluewave, devices upload context to a trusted server, and extend their Bluetooth name with a URL and a set of temporary credentials. Other devices can obtain this information via Bluetooth discovery, and use it to request and receive context without having to pair. Bluewave provides a simple but effective way for users to share context through their mobile devices, supporting applications where the environment needs to collect information about the user. Our system's design has been guided by user feedback, and integrates privacy controls to let users manage how their context is being shared. In this paper, we describe Bluewave's architecture, and show how it can be used to create a wide range of \"just in time\" services. We argue that Bluewave's low battery consumption, combined with its speed and compatibility with existing devices, significantly reduces the cost of sharing context, and provides a practical way to create, deploy, and prototype a new generation of context-aware applications.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114256454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interaction design teams can be multidisciplinary, and in this work we present a process where the requirements of the system are drawn up using a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) that is understandable by non-technical experts or clients. These CNL requirements can also be directly used by the Quality Assurance (QA) team to test the system and monitor whether or not the system runs as it should once deployed. Since commonly, systems are too complex to test all possible execution paths before deployment, monitoring the system at runtime is useful in order to check that the system is running correctly. If at runtime, it is discovered that an anomaly is detected, the relevant personnel is notified through a report in natural language.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123310989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Visual search has been considered as one of the most exciting trends in e-commerce. CircleBuy is a second screen application that leverages visual search to allow users to select pieces of furniture in a video and to receive similar product recommendations. In addition, our application attempts to support users in making purchase decisions by showing a 3D model of the piece of furniture that helps them to explore the product in detail. Products can furthermore be shared on television to discuss them with friends and family. This paper presents the concepts behind CircleBuy, its engineering and implementation aspects, and its evaluation. The concept was evaluated with 22 subjects in a simulated home environment. The results demonstrate the meaningfulness of the concept and offer insight into the utility and usability of the design of such a visual search based application.","PeriodicalId":287624,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 8th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116663990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
