The small rating auxiliary circuit proposed ensures not only zero voltage switching of the main switches and zero current switching of the auxiliary switches, the clamping voltage of the inverter is also stabilized. The scheme prevents any voltage or current spikes from occurring over the main or auxiliary switches and no modulation constraints are necessary. Many different lumped-parameter equivalent circuits have been proposed for the double-layer capacitor. Presented in this paper is a comparison of the classical equivalent circuit and ladder circuits. Parameters for the classical equivalent circuit are determined from in-situ circuit measurements. AC impedance data is acquired for the capacitor and utilized to determine parameters for the ladder circuits. The performance of the two equivalent circuits is evaluated in slow discharge and pulse load applications. In comparison to the ladder circuits, the classical circuit more accurately calculates the capacitor voltage during a slow discharge. In the pulse load application, the classical circuit and a low order ladder circuit predict approximately the same voltage drop measured in the laboratory.","PeriodicalId":287192,"journal":{"name":"APEC '99. Several topologies have been compared and analyzed, not only from the point of view of size (15 W/inch/sup 3/, 10 mm of height) and efficiency (>85%), but also regarding the dynamic response of the converter to supply pulsating loads (80 A//spl mu/s). A new driving scheme for self-driven synchronous rectification (SDSR) is used. With the increased speed of modern micro-controllers and digital signal processors and the reduced insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) drive package size, coupled with the low maintenance of AC motors, multiple machine configurability has been achieved with minimal process downtime. This progress required significant effort in mitigating numerous technical problems associated with this rapidly expanding technology. The paper reviews the economic trends in the industry, performance enhancements for volts per hertz (V/F) drives and high performance field oriented controllers (FOC), inverter hardware topologies, and IGBT induced system problems and solutions. In this paper, a novel high-input-voltage VRM, which can be used in high-bus-voltage power systems, is proposed. Two transistors (main and auxiliary switches), two diodes, two small resonant inductors and one resonant capacitor compose this commutation cell, appropriated to operate with insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) as the power switches. This new ZCS-PWM cell provides a zero-voltage (ZV) turn-on to the diodes, a zero-current (ZC) turn-on and a zero-current-zero-voltage (ZCZV) turn-off to the transistors. The new family of converters, originated from the proposed ZCS-PWM cell, offers conditions to obtain isolated converters, as example: derived buck-boost, Sepic and Zeta converters. An application of the new commutation cell in a new ZCS-PWM boost rectifier is developed, obtaining a structure with power factor near unity, high efficiency at wide load range and low total harmonic distortion (THD) in the input current. The principle of operation, the theoretical analysis and the design procedure are presented. A design example is developed and experimental results to the new high-power-factor (HPF) ZCS-PWM boost rectifier are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.","PeriodicalId":287192,"journal":{"name":"APEC '99. It is possible to protect a switching device from overheating due to repeated restriking at the end of lamp life. Furthermore, recovered ignition is possible through an optimum selection of circuit parameters. These advanced features can be simultaneously obtained with an addition of a simple R-C timer circuit into a re-striking circuit. So, a practical and reliable electronic starter can be achieved with a minimal cost. Experimental results on its performance show that MOSFET switching with a half-wave preheating current can ignite a fluorescent lamp of 20/spl sim/40 W within 0.5 s on 220 V mains voltage. During the switching endurance test performed over 30000 cycles no blackening of a lamp nor burn-out of the starter has been reported.","PeriodicalId":287192,"journal":{"name":"APEC '99. A permanent magnet generator generates a variable voltage and variable frequency which is converted by an AC/DC/AC power electronic system. The system provides an uninterruptible high quality output voltage under the most adverse load conditions-large step/impact loads, nonlinear loads and arc welding machines.
