Because of ubiquitous coverage and global connectivity, cellular networks are playing a major role in the deployment of M2M communications. Due to some unique characteristics of M2M communication, supporting M2M applications in cellular networks is very challenging. One of such challenge is congestion in radio access network (RAN) during RACH procedure. This is because of the fact that there are large numbers of M2M devices which access the radio network at the same time. As a solution, we propose an adaptive RACH congestion management function (ARC) which specifies congestion handling method to be used by all M2M devices based on the current congestion condition of the network.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125135909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While it is important to ensure the desired level of coverage, it is also necessary to do so with a minimum number of sensors from a network cost perspective. In this paper, we assume that the sensors are deployed at random uniformly in a three-dimensional FoI and all the sensors may not have the same sensing range and/or probability of being alive. In such a 3D heterogeneous WSN, we derive the critical condition for the desired level of coverage of the FoI using a probabilistic model. We validate our analysis and demonstrate its benefits. We also demonstrate an application of the analysis to the design of a minimum-cost 3D heterogeneous WSN.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128642246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hafid, Mustapha Boushaba","doi":"10.1109/ANTS.2013.6802890","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ANTS.2013.6802890","url":null,"abstract":"Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are reliable. However, in dense WMNs, interferences cause a significant degradation of end-to-end throughput of multi-hop paths. If WMNs are designed without reliability in mind, multipath routing and non-overlapping routes (i.e., protection routes) to gateways are not sufficient to ensure a reliable WMN design. Indeed, when taking into account Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, alternative paths may fail to re-route traffic in case of failures. Thus, the key challenge in WMN design is the definition and the measurement of WMNs reliability. In this paper, we define a new Reliability Analytical Measurement, called RAM, that allows the measurement/evaluation of WMN reliability in the planning phase and thus the comparison between different designs in terms of reliability. RAM is based on a Multi-Commodity Network Flow (MCNF) model. It considers probabilities of node failures and analytically computes the impact of non-reparable failures.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125146009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MIMO is a widely researched topic, and understanding of MIMO concepts have an interaction with other essential enhancement mechanisms in the system including link adaptation, resource scheduling, inter stream interference, rank of the channel, etc. This paper mainly aims to target the MIMO mode adaptation strategies in LTE systems by considering the rank and other key parameters like antenna correlation, doppler frequency, bit rate, throughput, etc. 3GPP LTE rel-8 has adopted seven MIMO modes and variable modulation and coding schemes (MCS) to effectively utilize the available resources for maximizing the throughput of the system. In this paper, new techniques for obtaining appropriate rank and a new MIMO mode switching algorithm to maximize data rate of the user equipment (UE) for a given channel consider at the receiver with reasonable complexity, and there by improving the average system throughput are proposed. The paper considers only four MIMO modes namely transmit diversity, open loop spatial multiplexing (OLSM), closed loop spatial multiplexing (CLSM) and beam-forming with different modulation levels. MIMO mode switching is done based on throughput value between open loop modes namely transmit diversity and OLSM for high mobility UE in the presence of co channel interference (CCI). Similarly, mode switching is done between closed loop modes namely CLSM and beam-forming for pedestrian UE in the presence of CCI. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance benefits of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results reveal that these new techniques improves the system throughput significantly.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127204991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) allows opportunistic uses of spectrum holes by enabling the coexistence of licensed (primary) users and unlicensed (secondary) users. Data dissemination in a CRN is very useful to propagate non-urgent messages in order to limit cost and complexity of the network. MAC protocols in existing legacy wireless networks do not support the coexistence of licensed and secondary users. This limits the productive utilization of spectrum holes by secondary users. In this paper, we propose a distributed TDMA based MAC protocol for data dissemination in multi-hop ad-hoc CRNs. Our protocol aims at not only ensuring highest message reachability but also avoiding collision among secondary users. It classifies the set of available channels based on both primary radio unoccupancy and number of cognitive radio neighbours having the channel in their available channel set. The secondary users prepare a TDMA schedule using a distributed approach. Secondary users select the best channel from the available channel set using a channel selection strategy. This increases data dissemination reliability in multi-hop ad-hoc CRNs. Simulation results show the efficacy of proposed method.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131119798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, the access segment consumes a major fraction (about 67%) of the energy consumption in end-to-end fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) based telecommunication networks, and thus the energy consumption of access networks remains a crucial concern. In this paper, we present a thorough analysis of energy consumption in various NGOA technologies. In this analysis, we have also accounted the effects of low power modes (e.g., sleep modes) and the use of optimal split ratios for the considered technologies on the energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124358839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current protocols such as TCP/IP were not originally designed with mobility as a key consideration, and therefore underperform under challenging mobile and wireless conditions. MobilityFirst, a clean slate architecture proposal, embraces several key concepts centered around secure identifiers that inherently support mobility and trustworthiness as key requirements of the network architecture. This includes a hop-by-hop segmented data transport that allows late and dynamic rebinding of endpoint addresses to support mobility. While this provides critical gains in wireless segments, some overheads are incurred even in stable segments such as in the core. Bypassing layer 3 decisions in these cases, with lower layer cut through forwarding, can improve said gains. In this work, we introduce a general bypass capability within the MobilityFirst architecture that could provide both better performance and enable both individual and aggregate flow-level traffic control. Furthermore, we present a detailed OpenFlow-based design to bypass layer 3 routing in MobilityFirst, using layer 2 VLAN tagging. Finally, we present a prototype that shows that it is possible to use OpenFlow to create the bypass.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114402926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper observes the relationship between throughput and path length, self-contention and interference and it investigates the effect of multiple data rates over multiple data flows in the network. Drawing from the limitations of the 802.11 specification, the paper proposes a scheduler named Hop Based Multi Queue (HBMQ), which is designed to prioritise traffic based on the hop count of packets in order to provide fairness across different data flows. The simulation results demonstrate that HBMQ performs better than a Single Drop Tail Queue (SDTQ) scheduler in terms of providing fairness. Finally, the paper concludes with a number of possible directions for further research, focusing on cross-layer implementation to ensure the fairness is also provided at the MAC layer.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123504047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hierarchical structure is the most preferable way of handling complex systems of any kind. Hence in this paper we devise a large hierarchical switched network using OpenFlow and propose the concept of adaptive replacement in flow table to evict uncertain flows at a particular time. Open Flow is a protocol which separates the control plane and data plane which helps in managing flow table and also to place controllers in large hierarchical networks.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129494713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Enterprise building having high deployment of femtocells, users keep moving from place to place inside the building. As a result existing handover schemes lead to a lot of handovers. These handovers are happen to provide seamless connectivity. However, some of the handovers can happen at locations where user mobility is constrained and therefore unnecessary. These unnecessary handovers can even lead to considerable packet loss, decrease in system throughput and high signaling cost. Mitigating these unnecessary handovers requires the notion of location and user mobility in indoor environment. In this paper, we propose an efficient self-organizing network (SON) based handover scheme to mitigate unnecessary handovers with the help of estimated user position information. Simulation carried out in NS-3 show that our proposed scheme achieves 31% improvement in reducing handover delay compared to an existing scheme.","PeriodicalId":286834,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS)","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124640000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
