Es hat sich jedoch gezeigt, dass Menschen auch aufgrund vorangegangener Geschmackserfahrungen schmecken können. Kann der Geschmack eines Gerichts im Gehirn erinnernd abgerufen werden, ist es also möglich zu schmecken, obwohl der Geschmackssinn (temporär) verloren gegangen ist? Ein solches Aufrufen sinnlicher Erfahrungen ist integrativer Bestandteil rezeptionsästhetischer Lektüreaspekte und kann die Bereiche aller Sinneskanäle umfassen: Wird eine innerdiegetische Saite angeschlagen, überträgt sich der Klang aufgrund von Erfahrungswerten in unsere Wahrnehmung.\u0000Open the Book, Strike Up the MusicForms and Functions of a Literary Soundtrack\u0000This article is based on the premise that literary texts exhibit a diversity of sounds that are not audible in the strict sense of the word. Instead, the literary sound experience is delegated to readers’ imaginations. It is only during the reading process that, depending on the readers’ experiences, sounds can be made ›audible.‹ Within the text, sounds are evoked by different literary devices. These include the use of literary soundtracks, which are generated when individual (pop) songs are quoted or alluded to in the text or the paratext. They also encompass references to band names, song titles or lyrics, or to sound storage media and their specific characteristics or to objects of everyday and popular culture (e.g. T-shirts). For the text analysis, a tool from the field of film music studies is employed: Georg Maas’s differentiation between a tectonic, a syntactic, a semantic and a mediating function of film music is used to discriminate between the diverse functions of pop music literary soundtracks. Jahrhunderts. Gemäß der biedermeierlich gestimmten, belehrenden Funktion des Textes steht kindliche Allmachtsfantasie im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Die Haltung des ›Mehr-mehr‹ überschreitet indes die Grenzen der Moralerzählung. Entgegen der abschreckenden Funktion scheint vielmehr der kleine Häwelmann in der Verschränkung von Norm-Übertritt und Eskapismus ein ›modernes‹ Kind seiner Entstehungszeit zu sein und durchaus mit den Figuren des Struwwelpeters vergleichbar, die der Arzt und Kinderpsychiater Heinrich Hoffmann 1845 entworfen hat.\u0000 \u0000»Dreams Undoubtedly Belong to Reality«Dream Narratives About Childhood and for Children\u0000The call for ›more!‹ is the force driving the protagonist of Theodor Storm’s literary fairy tale Der kleine Häwelmann (1850) on his imaginary journey through the night. This dream narrative is a combination of an exciting exploration of transcending borders with a hint of the moral tale, and can be seen as a model for the configuration of the dream motif in children’s and young adult literature. Although the dream narrative has a prominent place there, its investigation has hitherto almost exclusively taken place within the con­text of fantasy; the didactic functions of the dream, however, and the motif of the dream journey have largely been neglected. This article looks at how post­1945 children’s dream narratives explores representations of childhood. Benno Pludra’s Lütt Matten und die weiße Muschel (1963), a children’s story from the German Democratic Republic (GDR), is analysed and situated within the context of its literary system. Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are (1963) is next considered in relation to Pludra’s text in order to pro­vide a contrastive view to a key text from the Western literary system. Prophezeiungen und Träume – wie sich beispielsweise am Status des Orakels von Delphi als Omphalos (Giebel 2001, S. 7 f.) oder am vom römischen Philosophen Lukrez beschriebenen Beruf des Traumdeuters (Naf 2004, S. 90 f.) erkennen lasst – eine wichtige Rolle und nehmen ebenfalls politischen Einfluss (Trampedach 2015). Es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, dass auch gegenwärtige Mythenadaptionen, allen voran Rick Riordans Percy Jackson-Reihe bzw. mittlerweile korrekter: Reihen, in denen Percy Jackson mitunter als Crossover-Figur auftritt, auf Orakel, Prophezeiungen, Visionen und Träume vermehrt zurückgreifen.\u0000 \u0000»Don’t Let Morpheus Seduce You ...«Dreams, Oracles and Visions in Contemporary Retellings of Myths\u0000Oracles and dreams, which had a prominent position in antiquity, appear in the wake of the success of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series as frequent motifs in retellings of myths in contemporary young adult fantasy. This article examines three examples: Josephine Angelini’s Starcrossed trilogy (2011 – 2013), the first volume of Richard Normandon’s eponymous series La conspiration des dieux (2009) and Daniela Ohms’s two-volume Insel der Nyx (2013 – 2014). In these novels, the motifs serve to mirror typical topics of adolescence. Through their prophecies, the oracles circumscribe possible alter-native futures, and the protagonists react by either not complying or trying to prevent fulfilment. To regain self-determination, most of the young protagonists, and at least at one point in the narration, rebel against the predictions. Dreams (including daydreams), on the other hand, allow them to explore different concepts of identities. Oracles and dreams therefore become symbols for the changes that occur during adolescence. Sie wurde vom Staat gefördert und unterstützt, weil sie als wichtiges Instrument der sozialistischen Erziehung von Kindern und Jugendlichen galt (vgl. Lüdecke 2002, S. 434). Insofern besaß die KJL in der DDR einen vergleichsweise höheren gesellschaftlichen, politischen und künstlerischen Stellenwert als in der alten Bundesrepublik. Auch war die Grenze zwischen AutorInnen, die für eine erwachsene und eine kindliche bzw. jugendliche Leserschaft schrieben, nicht so strikt gezogen, wie man dies aus der Bundesrepublik kannte.\u0000 \u0000Learning to Write in the German Democratic Republic (GDR)Children’s and Young Adult Literature at the »Johannes R. Becher« Institute for Literature\u0000There was no shortage of children's and young adult literature in the German Democratic Republic (GDR )—it was promoted and supported by the state because it was an important instrument in the socialist education of children and young adults. Relative to this high status, it is not surprising that many of the best-known authors of children's and young adult’s books in the GDR studied at the renowned »Johannes R. Becher« Institute for Literature in Leipzig. This first, and, for a long time, only institute for creative and literary writing in German speaking countries was founded in 1955 and mandated with the task of training socialist writers. It was closed after German reunification in 1990 but was incorporated in 1995 into the University of Leipzig as the Leipzig Institute for Literature. In this article, an overview of the structure, tasks and goals of the Johannes R. Becher Institute is given, and selected texts for children and young adults that were written by its students are examined. Eine seltsame Gabe: Von ihren Träumen bleibt am Morgen etwas zurück.\u0000 \u0000»A Dream of a Dream«Dreaming as a Metafictional Device in Children’s and Young Adult Literature\u0000This article analyses the relationship between dreaming, art and identity in Franz Hohler’s Tschipo (1978) and Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle (2012 – 2016) and The Dreamer Trilogy (2019 – ). At the centres of their fictional universes lies the fantastic ability of specific characters to take things out of their dreams; an ability which is both a plot element and a narrative principle. In Tschipo, dreaming is used in analogy to storytelling, with the storyteller inventing worlds that are so vibrant that the audience is unable to discern what is ›real‹ and what is ›just‹ invented or dreamed. In Stiefvater’s books, the character of the dreamer is revealed to be a kind of artist who thrives on the thrill of creation and transgression. In all the texts, the concept of taking things out of dreams is transgressive on two levels: Formally, it is used to subvert traditional storytelling and to question the role of the narrator. In terms of plot, it is employed in order to articulate nonnormative identities, lifestyles and desires. It tells the story of 16-year-old Seth who drowns in the first chapter of the book and then finds himself in a desolate, abandoned place, wondering whether he is still alive or in some version of hell – or somewhere in between – and dreaming his last dream in the moment of death. Or might Seth have woken up from what could be called a collective dream, a virtual reality that has become the safe haven for humanity after the physical world has become uninhabitable? Neither the protagonist nor the reader is given a conclusive answer. This article addresses the literary strategies that are deployed in the novel to create this plurality of possible readings. Specific attention is paid to the way in which structural elements of the utopian novel and the adolescent novel are combined and hybridised. Der/die Träumende befindet sich in einem Stadium jenseits der Realität, in einem Dazwischen von Leben und Tod, und ist »mit einer Erlebenswelt und einer Erlebensweise konfrontiert, die [Manfred Engel zufolge] auf ebenso evidente wie rätselhafte Weise anders sind als die des wachen Lebens« (ebd.).\u0000 \u0000From Predictive Dreaming to Pathological DeliriumNew Interpretations of Seldom-Addressed Types of Dreams in Children’s and Young Adult Literature\u0000All major categories of dreams identified in psychoanalysis occur as literary dreams in children’s and young adult literature. However, there are some categories, such as predictive dreams and pathological delirium, which have rarely been addressed in the academic discussion. Using a transdisciplinary approach, this article analyses the characteristics and functions of both types of literary dreams in texts for young readers, in each case looking at a historical and a contemporary text in order to be able to trace its specific development. The article begins with an introduction of the characteristics and historical sources of literary dreams of both types. Then, with passing references to other texts that influenced the tradition of each type of literary dream, an analysis of Lou Andreas-Salomé’s novella Wolga (1902) and Siobhan Dowd/Patrick Ness’s young adult novel A Monster Calls (2011) addresses the predictive dream, while an analysis of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s literary fairy tale Nußknacker und Mausekönig (1816) and Libba Bray’s young adult novel Going Bovine (2009) addresses pathological delirium.
