The opposite is the case. We are born without a home and without reason, and have to exert ourselves and are fortunate if we succeed in building a secure home and a sound mind. ...the terms ‘home’ and ‘mental health’ refer to complex, personal traits-as-possessions, which must be acquired, cultivated, and maintained by ceaseless effort’.–Thomas Szasz (p. 9; quoted from Szasz’s book, Cruel Compassion: Psychiatric Control of Society’s Unwanted). (1) You don’t have to read this book as, judging from its title, you can imagine it to be a positive narrative for our cause; and that’s just what it is. However, do read and enjoy, that is my advice. Jerry M. Kantor (b. 1948) is a licensed acupuncturist and certified classical homeopath (CCH) and faculty member of the Ontario College of Homeopathic Medicine (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). He was the first acupuncturist to receive an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Anaesthesiology. Dr Kantor conducts his private medical practice in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). Insane Asylums is Dr Kantor’s fifth book, the others being, Interpreting Chronic Illness: The Convergence of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy and Biomedicine (2011), The Toxic Relationship Cure: Clearing Traumatic Damage from a Boss, Parent, Lover or Friendwith Natural, Drug-Free Remedies (2013), Autism Reversal Toolbox: Strategies, Remedies, Resources (2015; 2nd 2022), Heymischer Homeopathy: The Schmendrick’s Guide to Remedying Yiddish Kvetches (2017; Chaim Yankel, Kantor’s pseudonym). In 12 chapters and 5 appendices, the author spells out the successes which homeopathic therapeutics had at several mental institutions in the United States during the turn of the 20th century. In Chapter 4, Dr Kantor discusses, in some detail, the madness which befell Mary Todd Lincoln after her husband’s assassination. Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), the 16th President of the United States, served from 1861 to 1865, when he was killed by John Wilkes Booth on April 15 of 1865. Lincoln continues to be much revered in the United States. In this extraordinary chapter, the author discusses the charming yet mentally unstable widow the Lincoln family’s positive relationship with homeopathy, (Abraham was a believer), the mental health trial of Mary Todd and Richard J. Patterson, a compassionate allopathically educated physician who took special care of the widow at his sane asylum, Bellevue Place located in Batavia, Illinois. Research ethics may be defined as doing what is morally and legally right in research. Despite dealing with human beings, homoeopathy research deals with human clinical, pre-clinical (drug proving) trials, preclinical animal studies, veterinary studies and plant studies that demand varied ethical strategies. The importance of ethics in medical research is mandated to avoid adverse events before, during and after the trials. Ethics in medical practice and medical research is based on Nuremberg's Code and Declaration of Helsinki. The two major guidelines in the homoeopathic medical research publications are Reporting data on Homeopathic treatments (RedHot): A supplement to Consolidated Standards for Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for clinical trials and Reporting Experiments in Homeopathic Basic Research (REHBaR). This article discusses the evolution of ethics in medical research, principles of ethics, components to be considered pre-trial, during and post-trial. Arora, Meetu Goel","doi":"10.1055/s-0042-1755398","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1055/s-0042-1755398","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract Introduction  Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is defined as elevated levels of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) (TSH: 5–20 μIU/mL; normal range: 0.15–3.5 μIU/mL) with normal serum levels of free thyroid hormones mainly free T4 (0.89–1.76 ng/dL). SCH does not affect the development process very much and hence there are no universally accepted recommendations for its treatment but it is important to have optimal thyroid function for normal growth and development in children; it may progress to overt hypothyroidism and other health issues. So, its diagnosis in early stage of life and hence its treatment will definitely benefit the growing children. Objective  The objective of this study is to review the role of homoeopathy in SCH in younger aged females. Method  Total 212 cases were screened, 54 diagnosed cases of SCH were enrolled on the basis of inclusion criteria and 4 cases dropped out from the study. Total 50 cases were given individualised homoeopathic medicines based on repertorisation of totality of symptoms and in consultation with Materia Medica. Result  Results showed significant difference after comparing pre- and post-treatment values using paired t -test; the difference in mean values of Serum TSH values was found to be statistically significant ( p -value < 0.00001). At baseline, the mean TSH level was 7.158 μIU/mL which decreased to 4.368 μIU/mL ( p  < 0.00001). Conclusion  This study indicates the positive role of homoeopathic therapy in the management of SCH. Such study with bigger sample size through randomised controlled trial is needed for further validation.","PeriodicalId":283226,"journal":{"name":"Homœopathic Links","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114901789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Psychotropic medicines used for management are effective but are characterised by severe limitations. Alternate safe and effective treatment regimens are being explored. Homoeopathy is a system of medicine based on individualistic approach with potential relevance to psychiatry. Purpose  The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate the utility of homoeopathy in management of schizophrenia. Client Description  A 37-year-old female patient was brought by her husband to outpatient department of psychiatry. Auditory hallucinations, referential delusions, thought withdrawal and emotional outbursts were reported during the interview. Measures and Outcome  The physician's initial assessment lead to diagnosis of schizophrenia and confirmed as paranoid schizophrenia by the psychiatrist. Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia (CGI-SCH) was used to assess the severity of symptoms at baseline and consecutive follow-ups for 18 months. Intervention  The patient was prescribed a single dose of Natrum carbonicum 200C and repeated only once after 8 months, when sleep disturbance demanded repetition. Results  Baseline CGI-SCH scores in domains of severity of illness and degree of change were 29 and 20, respectively, which reduced to 5 (normal) in both domains by 4 months and remained the same for the next 2 years. Implications  This case study reinforces the utility of homoeopathy in schizophrenia and throws light on importance of a thorough case taking of psychiatric patients to elicit totality of symptoms to arrive at the similimum.","PeriodicalId":283226,"journal":{"name":"Homœopathic Links","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122715789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is mostly a result of genetic mutation caused due to consanguineous marriage. Due to deficiency of fibrin stabilising factor, a clot formed is weak and leads to fibrinolysis, which is evident as unstoppable bleeding from umbilical cord stump, epistaxis and bleeding from various organs. The condition is made worst due to intellectual disability as the patient is more prone to injuries due to lack of knowledge of impending dangers. The latest provision of gene therapy is yet to be achieved in such cases and therefore the biggest challenge lies in keeping these patients fit and functional with optimum quality of life. The anxiety of parents is intensified due to the overall condition of the patient. This case report presents homoeopathic management of one such case. The patient was under treatment for almost a decade. Acute homoeopathic medicines efficiently managed acute haemorrhagic episodes. Constitutional medicine Bufo Rana was prescribed in the asymptomatic phase, which helped to reduce the frequency and intensity of bleeding and also helped to improve social quotient of the patient. The social quotient was assessed employing the Vineland Social Maturity Scale, and the result shows that the social quotient of the patient has improved from 8.3 to 41.66. The anxiety of parents also reduced, which was measured using the Family Interview for Stress and Coping in Mental Retardation Scale. The case analysis was done using a paired t -test. The p -value is less than 0.0001 and highly significant. The evaluation of the homoeopathic treatment was done using modified Naranjo criteria for homoeopathy. Homoeopathy medicines efficiently managed the acute episodes of bleeding and also showed improvement in the intellectual disability.","PeriodicalId":283226,"journal":{"name":"Homœopathic Links","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122481308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Joachim-F. Grätz (b. 1963) is a German classical homeopath whose initial homeopathic mentor was Dr Otto Eichelberger (1918–2005) of Munich. Dr Eichelberger was one of the first to take into account the miasms in therapy and who also popularised the use of the Q-potencies in the German speaking world. Grätz, too, attended seminars given by Gerhard Risch (1927–1998), Dr Mohinder Singh Jus (1947–2019), George Vithoulkas, Michael Barthel, Yves LaBorde, Rajan Sankaran and Paul Herscu etc. This varied background provided the author with several different homeopathic perspectives to rely upon. For a period of time, Dr Grätz also served as lecturer in classical homeopathy at various academies of naturopathy in Munich, Salzburg and Vienna, and at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University. Dr Grätz’s other important source of inspiration came from Ryke Geerd Hamer (1935–2017) and that man’s recent contribution, German New Medicine (GNM). See Hamer’s opus, Kurzfassung der neuen Medizin, which appeared in 1994 (3rd edition, 2000). Since that time, others havewritten on this subject, e.g. Dr Katherine Willow’s German New Medicine: Experiences in Practice -An Introduction to the Medical Discoveries of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer (2019; Hamer did not publish any substantive works in the English language). See also the works of Andrea Taddei and Björn Eybl. Hamer’s approach, without going into detail, introduces the five biological laws essential to understanding disease and healing. He came upon his discoveries after the homicidal death of his son, Dirk. Grätz’s tome is essentially a summary of his approach to health and disease while also serving as critique of the dominant health care system which he spearheads in Chapter 1 (40pp), ‘Today’s Healthcare system A Critical Review’. Additionally throughout, he tackles all the various weak points of the conventional medical model in particular vaccination which he does so from the European Union perspective. Chapter 2 (50pp), ‘The Chronic Laws of Classical Homeopathy’, discusses just that, while Chapter 3 (40pp), ‘General Medical Basics Based on the Laws of Nature’, discusses GNM and Grätz’s understanding of it. Then comes Chapter 4 (20pp), ‘Encephalopathy: A Necessary Consequence of Vaccinations’, before the largest chapter of 350 pages, ‘Gentle Medicine: Helping People in the Third Millennium’. It is in this section that he explains his Gentle Medicine methodology which consists of three aspects, classical homeopathy plus GNM plus the heroic or interventionistic aspects of allopathic care. He does not offer a clear or concise explanation of GNM so one must supplement that area with other texts or information gleaned from the internet. He does mention Hamer’s 5 biological laws but offers little detail. Objective  The aim of this study is to assess the utility of individualised homoeopathic treatment (IHT) in managing painful episodes with the improvement in QoL of CP patients. Method  A pretest–posttest clinical study was conducted on 40 patients with CP. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) were the outcome measures, assessed at baseline and after 2 months of IHT. Modified Naranjo Criteria (MNC) evaluated the possible causal attribution of IHT. Results  There was a statistically significant reduction in pain NRS score (8.89 ± 0.84 vs 2.97 ± 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 5.44–6.39; p  < 0.01) as well as DLQI score (19.35 ± 2.95 vs 3.59 ± 1.99; 95% CI = 15.06–16.45; p  < 0.01) among 37 patients. The large effect size derived (4.17) clinically, substantiates the beneficial effects in managing the painful episodes of CP. The MNC scores (7–10) ascertained the likelihood of improvement due to IHT. Conclusion  IHT significantly reduced the pains due to CP and improved the QoL. Further studies are warranted with enhanced methodology.","PeriodicalId":283226,"journal":{"name":"Homœopathic Links","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123327747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
