LTE revises and improves system architecture from UMTS to provide services that are more efficient. Evolved-UTRAN (E-UTRAN) is the air interface of 3GPP and it is on the upgrade path for LTE mobile networks. E-UTRAN specifies better security architecture to protect users' information. However, E-UTRAN is still not perfect. This article studies vulnerabilities of non-access-stratum (NAS) of E-UTRAN. We present illustrative attacks to exploit such vulnerabilities and demonstrate the effectiveness and the impact of such attacks on normal users by using our self-developed simulation tool.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127622679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed scheme can reduce the feedback load of channel quality indicator (CQI) required for proportional fair scheduling at base station (BS). The probability distributions of instantaneous rate and average rate are studied. Then the distribution of proportional fair (PF) priority is obtained. Each user predicts the probability of being scheduled on the condition that its own PF priority is known. To reduce the amount of feedback load, a hard threshold of PF probability is designed for the CQI feedback reduction. This threshold is broadcast to all the users and only the users whose instantaneous PF priorities are higher than the threshold will feed back the CQI. The amount of feedback load saved by implementing the hard threshold is determined and the effect on the system throughput is analyzed. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the feedback overhead while minimize the throughput loss.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116838731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This due to the low cost deployment, the high capacity and the large coverage. Quality of Service (QoS) is achieved through the use of five service classes (UGS, ertPS, rtPS, nrtPS, and BE), an Admission Control (AC) mechanism, a traffic policer and a traffic shaper. The AC, traffic policer and traffic shaper are not defined in the standard. We focus on the laster by proposing in this study a new traffic shaper that avoids low priority traffic while it keeping good QoS for high priorities traffic. We evaluate the proposed algorithm by a markov chain to show the benefits of the proposed shaping algorithm.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124472557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In IEEE 802.16j, the multiple Relay Stations (RS) are added to employ multihop links for WiMAX systems to extend coverage range and capacity. Many works in literature concern the RS locations based on the effective cost and the optimum user capacity. Most of them assumed the lossless transmission between RS and Base Station (BS). Consequently, the distance between RS and BS has no effect on locating RS. However, the real performance of WiMAX signals has to take the physical link between RS and BS into account. Therefore, this paper proposes the design of suitable RS distances to provide the required Bit Error Rate (BER) in coverage range. The results indicate the importance of designing relay distances. Also this paper reveals the method to design the suitable RS location under BER consideration.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129875537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The code design method achieves a diversity order of 4 with two transmit and two receive antennas. Firstly, we demonstrate that the proposed 4D-TCM-STBC scheme with perfect CSI significantly outperforms the traditional STBC schemes under the same spatial diversity and signal constellation. Then, the Rayleigh fading channel parameters are estimated using a pilot symbols based least squares (LS) estimator. Simulation results demonstrate the good performance of the proposed non-coherent scheme against concatenated STBC and conventional TCM already published. Unfortunately, due to the weak convergence of LS estimator with reduced pilot symbols number, BER loss against coherent system is still observed but stands much smaller than BER loss shown by competitive schemes.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121440158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The efficiency of search algorithm is very important for vector quantization. In this paper, a planar-oriented ripple based greedy search algorithm is proposed to reduce the search time of vector quantization. In order to reduce the dimensions of vectors, principal component analysis is used to find the principal components with the most variability. To find the closer codewords, Voronoi diagram is applied to find the Voronoi cells, then, the adjacency list can be generated. Finally, to improve the efficiency of codeword searching, a greedy search is adopted to reduce the searching space. The results of the present study show that the proposed approach achieves a better performance than planar Voronoi diagram search algorithm.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126565478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As we know that the need for high quality and high capacity networks and estimating coverage accurately has become extremely important. Therefore, for more accurate design coverage of modern cellular networks, signal strength measurements must be taken in consideration, in order to provide an efficient and reliable coverage area. This paper addresses the applicability of Okumura-Hata model in Al Khuwair, Oman in GSM frequency band of 890-960 MHz. The study was carried out for urban area only, since measurements provided from local service provider were about the urban areas. The mean square error (MSE) was calculated between measured path loss values and those predicated on basis of Okumura-Hata model for this area. We accomplish the modification of model by investigating the variation in pathloss between the measured and predicted values, according to the Okumura-Hata propagation model for a cell in Al-Khuwair city and then finding the missing experimental data with spline and cubic regression. The selected model was considered the most suitable after initial study of several other models (not the scope of current study). The mean square error (MSE) was calculated between measured path loss values and those predicated on basis of Okumura-Hata model for an urban area. The MSE is up to 6dB, which is an acceptable value for the signal prediction. The obtained experimental data is compared and analyzed further using a cubic regression on the set of the experimental data. Scatter plot of the experimental data on path loss verses distance reveals a third order polynomial trend in the experimental data. Therefore the cubic regression model was fitted using method of least squares which estimates the parameters by minimizing sum of squares of the white noise. The coefficient of determination of this regression suggested that more than 90% variation in path loss can be explained.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133192674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when MSs roam in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks, the conventional handoff process is not suitable for seamless mobile services. In this paper, we propose a channel-switched AP architecture in which the neighboring APs cooperate in changing the RF channel periodically in a manner determined by an AP manager so that a MS can maintain a wireless connection to APs through a RF channel even if it moves to the neighboring AP service areas. Therefore, even though a MS moves between APs, it does not require the conventional handoff process since it recognizes all the APs as one AP. Performance results verify that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional WLANs in the seamless mobility management.","PeriodicalId":281865,"journal":{"name":"2012 Computing, Communications and Applications Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123694721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
