Autobiographical memories (AM) are better remembered when an event is associated with strong emotional experiences. In this work, we introduce an experimental paradigm in VR to investigate the effect of emotional AM recall on a user’s physiological state when coupled with wearable electrodermal activity (EDA) sensors and integrated pupil trackers. With an objective to benchmark the effect of AM recall on human physiology, we replicated the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) in VR which displays positive, negative, and neutral valence words to participants for them to recall self-relevant memories associated with that word. We found that there was a positive effect of AM recall on EDA peak amplitude, EDA peak number, and pupil diameter when comparing with no recall. However, there was no impact on emotional AM recall. Finally, we discuss the limitations and possibilities of leveraging autobiographical memory to create personalized mobile VR experiences when used with wearable physiological sensors.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"28 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120905493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These experiences can be simulated in Extended Reality (XR) systems– interactive environments generated by computer technology combining real and virtual worlds. Such systems have shown to be excellent tools for providing guidance to teach different skills and activities. In this research, we introduce a comprehensive design space grounded in (i) XR technologies, and (ii) theoretical underpinnings of experiential learning and guidance. We use this design space to describe key design decisions in prior work and elucidate existing gaps. Employing the design space, we intend to build an adaptive, personalised instructional guidance system in XR, which offers various levels of guidance that adapt to users’ learning progress. We utilise the Kolb’s experiential learning cycle considering all four stages and transitions within it. With XR technologies, we offer the environment that can provide guidance to support learners to move spontaneously from one stage to another in the experiential learning cycle and further progress on the learning spiral. It is the latter that we explore in this research by adopting potential learning scenarios such as language learning and spatial navigation. We attempt to investigate how different factors of instructional guidance, such as the amount (minimal guidance, full guidance, and adaptive guidance) and the type (from direct instructions to associative models based examples), would affect the experiential learning process and learning outcomes of different learning scenarios in XR environments.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115586103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While they may increase societal resilience, their design, functionality, and underlying infrastructures must be resilient against disruptions caused by anthropogenic, natural and hybrid crises, emergencies, and threats. In order to research challenges, designs, and potentials of interactive technologies, the second iteration of the workshop investigates the space of mobile technologies and resilient systems for crisis response, including the application domains of cyber threat and pandemic response.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114638339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used feedback from interviews and participatory design workshops with clinicians to develop two prototypes of the streaming vital sign interface. We evaluated these prototypes in design-walkthroughs, finding that clinicians preferred the design displaying trend graphs for all four vital signs at once. We discuss how streaming data interfaces on interactive mobile devices can be used to provide situational awareness while unobtrusively supporting different levels of clinical experience.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129181811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While many studies in HCI have identified obstacles older adults encountered in technology use, little is known about the digital inequity that older adults experienced in adopting and using the tablet PC for the first time. In this study, we provided 28 low-income older adults with instruction sessions to help them set up and use tablet PCs. From these sessions, we found that while social connection as the most requested feature provides a positive experience, creating or managing a login account and being unfamiliar with common interaction techniques were challenging for older adults to use a tablet PC for the first time. We conclude with design implications for senior-friendly technology.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"17 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131693093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several approaches in augmented reality such as piano-roll visualizations have been explored but have not garnered enough success and adoption. These piano roll prototypes have introduced several features and modules that assist novices on aspects such in sight reading, timing and many others. However, improvisation, the act of allowing the piano user to incorporate their personal touch into their performance, and personalised learning have not been much explored in this domain. In this PhD, we are going to explore how we can encourage piano learners to improvise with the use of adaptive piano roll visualisations. Specifically, we are going to investigate how heuristics defined by experts and spatiotemporal models can be used to design visualisations that motivate and encourage learners based on their personalised learning patterns. Using these models and inputs, we will design and build a piano roll training system integrated with adaptive visualisations that serve as intervention helping learners. We will evaluate and compare these visualisations in various user studies where they get to play piano pieces and develop their improvisation skills. We intend to uncover whether these adaptive visualisations will be helpful in the overall training of piano learners. Additionally, we wish to explore whether these adaptive visualisations will allow us to discover affordances that can potentially improve piano learning in general.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133408469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, there is a need to examine the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of both the driving experience and VR immersion, and how they influence each other. This project is a step towards this goal, through (1) developing and fully validating a series of novel measures to fill critical gaps in the researchers’ toolbox; and (2) leveraging these tools to study the challenging but highly important task of using VR in a vehicle.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116347479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is an increasing emphasis on making AI more understandable to non-experts who are expected to use AI techniques but have limited knowledge about AI. We propose a mobile application to help non-experts understand convolutional neural networks (CNN) in an interactive way; it allows users to taking pictures of surrounding objects and use pre-trained CNN to recognize it. We use the latest XAI (Class Activation Map) technology to visualize the model decision (the most important image area leading to a specific result). This playful learning tool was implemented in college courses and found to help design students gain a vivid understanding of the functions and limitations of pre-trained CNN in the real world. We thereby contribute an online tool that could be used for twofold purposes: first, it could help non-experts interactively learn how a pre-trained CNN works. Second, it can be used by researchers to probe and characterize the non-experts’ process of sensemaking, which could contribute insights into explainable AI design beyond expert users.","PeriodicalId":281566,"journal":{"name":"Adjunct Publication of the 23rd International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121476245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
