This paper takes the well-known Prospecting Asteroids Mission from NASA, an autonomous and autonomic system for future exploration of asteroid fields, which can be considered as a axiomatic example of how autonomic principles can be applied in real terms. Introducing the agent modeling language (AML), we demonstrate using a series of didactic examples how AML can be applied to efficiently, accurately and comprehensively model the PAM system. A selection of AML models specifying the PAM domain, goals, architecture, and behaviors are presented which help demonstrate the utility of AML when modeling autonomous and autonomic systems","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125926770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Swarm technologies by D'Arrigo, P, Santandrea, S. (2005) use context-awareness in short-haul networks between components, and long-distance networks allow communication with Earth. However, the propagation delays limit real-time communications, deep space being an environment in which the speed of light becomes a restriction. Therefore, the development of a protocol stack which is adaptive to application requirements and external influences will help to maximise communication synchronicity. As part of a first year doctorate research programme, this paper correlates current stack functionalities with interplanetary application requirements. A redesigned stack proposes to resolve this misalignment. Context-awareness is incorporated, enabling intelligent protocol selection using application layer knowledge and environmental information, with particular attention given to transport protocols. The paper concludes by considering transport protocol characteristics when deployed beside a context-aware layer, with the long-term aim being the development of a transport protocol suitable for deployment in the state-of-the-art context-aware stack","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125561042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The graph structure reflects the pipeline-based processing of applications typical for adaptive data processing and transfer in mobile and pervasive environments. Parametrizable components and connectors represent mechanisms for processing application data as well as its mediation between components. Further elements represent contextual information and its mapping to component and connector parameters allowing an explicit definition of adaptation control. Thus, the model enables the explicit modeling of adaptation mechanisms as well as of reconfigurations inform of alternative paths, both controlled by parameter changes. The meta-model provides a certain view and abstraction on adaptive software systems which can be combined with other views to create comprehensive system descriptions. It represents a platform independent model (PIM) not tied to a certain component platform and can be mapped to existing component platforms like J2EE or Microsoft .NET using an MDA-approach","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126420342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The former focuses on deploying an application, which is composed of fine-grained components, in a mobile distributed computing environment based on resource information that is spread through context-data. The latter focuses on letting the component deployment configuration adapt itself when the resources in the environment change due to device mobility. Both techniques are solved using a single mechanism that is based on an extended version of collaborative reinforcement learning (CRL) in the design of our component deployment framework. In order to find local optimal solutions for deploying a component-based application in a distributed resource constrained environment, the CRL method balances the resource consumption of components on several nodes that are in each other's proximity","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128963333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AOMs provide a meta-layer architecture through which controlled (i.e. domain meaningful and correct) transformations of base-level computation can be achieved. Our work is derived from a model driven approach to systems construction, in which architectural modelling artefacts of a development process are used directly to construct a system AOM. Modification of modelling is explicitly mapped to AOM adjustment, and thus to system modification. We propose an extension to this approach to capture dynamic and autonomic concerns. We explore how resulting systems models might readily accommodate unforeseen changes in the environment and react appropriately without the need for programmer intervention","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116622567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective is to exploit and reuse the synergy of groups to optimize data access in a distributed system. A self management based on thematic similarity between nodes is an efficient manner of optimizing data access (availability and selectivity). The evaluation and the test of such architecture before its large deployment are, however, extremely important. Therefore, a simulation tool called P2PEACE is developed. It is designed primarily to visualize interactions between the network nodes and provide some related statistics to measure the exchange performance. In fact, the existing simulation environments offer good tools of testing the performance of an isolated node (e.g. Web cache) or algorithms used for cooperation between groups. However, these approaches do not give a clear vision of the content mobility between the system nodes. In this paper, a method to analyze collective nodes as a global system and understand how contents move around them is, therefore, proposed. Results showed that a semantic organization can greatly optimize the exchanges in such a situation","PeriodicalId":279708,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (ICAS'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131345571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Policies can be used to express required or desired behavior of systems and applications and so can be used to specify to an autonomic management system the expected operational characteristics of these systems. Such policies can be captured and mapped into autonomic management actions, providing the kinds of directives on which an autonomic management system can rely in order to meet requirements.
