Simulating such phenomena can be a useful guide for conservators and restorers. In this direction, the current paper proposes an aging simulation method which models the impact of physical forces using a particle-based approach. The proposed simulation method enhances the realism of the aging simulation through the creation of realistically shaped geometry regions for the decay formation under the effect of physical forces. Particularly, the case of gravitational accelerations effect was examined. The method is general and its application can be extended to different kinds of materials and weathering phenomena. A metallic sculpture has been used as a case study and the qualitative results presented in each intermediate processing step, demonstrate the overall functionality and the promising potential of the suggested approach in comparison with other existing methods and the decayed appearance of cultural heritage objects in their natural environment.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127367337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These sensor units recognise gestures of a user, enabling a comfort control in game applications. Despite the wide usage of motion sensor units in various applications, we utilize an array of detached and low-cost controller units and an Oculus Rift DK2 to develop two VR games, for the first time. In one application, the user can control a space-ship movements by its hand movements. The other game is a first-person shooting game, in which an array of sensors are used for aiming and shooting purpose. This type of control provides the feeling of full immersion inside a VR environment. The developed sensor unit is a promising controller for a broad range of applications in virtual and augmented reality industry.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"54 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113941049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proliferation can only be supported by exploiting key features characterizing 3D video nature in these investigations. In this paper, a Reduced Reference (RR) metric is developed considering that the spatial resolution and perceptually significant depth level are two effective features for efficiently evaluating depth perception of the 3D video. In order to determine the perceptually significant depth levels in the depth map sequences, abstraction filter is exploited in the development of the proposed metric. Owing to the fact that the depth perception significantly differs for the depth map sequences having dissimilar relative depth levels, this feature is also incorporated with the proposed metric through normalized standard deviation. Structural SIMilarity metric (SSIM) is utilized to predict the depth perception degraded with the change in the perceptually important levels of the compressed depth maps having dissimilar spatial resolutions and relative depth levels. The performance assessment of the proposed RR metric proves the effectiveness of the proposed metric for ensuring immersive 3D video services.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123984108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emerging technologies of Head-mounted displays (HMDs) equipped with positional tracking allow users now a Holodeck-experience. Live captured content for these devices needs to conform with both, requirements for 3D-TV or 3D-telecommunication systems, namely narrow-baseline high-quality 3D capture and more wide-baseline oriented free-viewpoint video (FVV). This contribution presents a server-client architecture that fits these requirements by combining features of view-dependent rendering with stereoscopic set-ups by optimizing multi-camera information for the viewpoint requested by a client rendering system, based on a games engine. We demonstrate our system with a HMD VR system and an auto-stereoscopic display. Our system achieves low latencies that are required for VR applications. Our results are lower than comparable networked FVV systems.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131120231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application fields span a wide range and recently the educational aspect started having a significant impact. In this paper we design a framework that allows the user to visit a virtual museum in which all canvases painted by Caravaggio and conserved in Rome are displayed. The aim of this project is two-fold: on one hand we provide the user with the possibility of having a personalized and educative exploration of an artistic content, while on the other hand we assess the acceptability of this virtual reality-based application by the final user. The system has been implemented in three different versions, one based on a standard interaction between subject and PC, while the other two rely on the use of Google Cardboard, a low-cost framework for virtual reality rendering. In order to assess the Quality of Experience of the users of the system, we performed subjective experiments that showed pros and cons of the proposed system and highlighted some guidelines towards the use of VR for serious gaming. The synergic cooperation between Art History and ICT gave to this project a peculiar aim in which both disciplines' interests and needs are profitably combined to build a Digital Humanities project. The result is a product, which is philologically accurate and at the same time innovative in terms of technologies used.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122958207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the resolution and accuracy of the modern 3D scanners are constantly improving, the captured 3D point clouds are usually highly incomplete, stressing the need of completion approaches with low computational requirements. In this paper, we introduce a novel regularized Laplacian interpolation approach for a fast and effective consolidation of a TVPC. Extensive evaluation studies, carried out using a collection of different incomplete TVPCs, verify that the proposed technique achieves plausible reconstruction output despite the constraints posed by arbitrarily complex and motion scenarios.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"3 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126035876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The output of this estimation can be fed into encoding and transmission units for compensation. The proposed method operates with minimum dependency on reference video. Content characteristics, no reference (NR) and reduced reference (RR) quality metrics are extracted and summarised prior to training stage. Content features are based on spatio-temporal activities within depth layers. Quality features include NR blockiness, NR blurriness and RR 3D stereoscopic video quality metric. Due to fast and accurate requirements for the quality estimation, decision trees are employed where a 0.94 accuracy is achieved.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116993831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a between-subjects study (n=50) exploring if visual realism (polygon count and texture resolution) affects presence during a scenario involving gameplay, graphics, and controls that, contrary to much existing research, resemble commercially available VR games. The results suggest that participants exposed to a higher degree of visual realism experienced a stronger sensation of presence, as assessed by means of self-reports, and physiological measures revealed that higher visual realism also was accompanied by stronger fear responses which may be indicative of stronger presence.","PeriodicalId":279013,"journal":{"name":"2017 3DTV Conference: The True Vision - Capture, Transmission and Display of 3D Video (3DTV-CON)","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115665614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
