The identification method is based on the real-time tracking of power transfer capability using a classical two-bus Thevenin equivalent network. The power margin is determined for quantifying the proximity to system collapse. A method of combining generator shedding and load shedding for emergency control actions against transient instability is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed method is rigorously tested and verified using the real-time power system simulator hardware-in-the-loop testing platform. The proposed method is simple, computationally very fast and easy to implement in the real-time system. The results are encouraging and appropriate for future integration into the Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection and Control system at TNB.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134331634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of SHE in low-voltage application with low switching frequency is investigated in this paper. Unipolar and bipolar PWM techniques are added to analyze and compare their performances in term of harmonic distortion, fundamental output components and quality of output waveforms. Simulation evaluation of H-bridge inverter confirms that unipolar PWM outbid all techniques yet SHE is comparably has the same performances as bipolar PWM despite of the use of low switching frequency.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134345386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In any condition, the behavior of a PV system can be analyzed by studying its constitutive PV cells. Single-junction PV cells are widely used in most of PV systems because of their low price. SJ cells have a disappointing defect and that is their low efficiency. Maximum efficiency for SJ cells is 15% in best conditions, which is not acceptable. So a new generation of PV cells with higher efficiencies have been produced and their technology is growing fast. New PV cells are multi-junction cells which have efficiencies about 50%. It is easy to predict that with more development in the related technology and lowering the price of MJ cells, they will have a significant share in PV systems. So it is necessary to implement a model for MJ PV cells to use in related simulations. In this paper after gathering basic analytical relations and equations of MJ cells, an appropriate model will be proposed.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132493396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, HI was represented as hidden state and the condition parameter factors in the HI algorithm namely Dissolved Gas Analysis Factor (DGAF), Oil Quality Analysis Factor (OQAF) and Furfural Analysis Factor (FAF) were represented as the observable states. A case study of 1130 oil samples from 373 oil-typed distribution transformers (33/11 kV and 30 MVA) were examined. First, the mean for HI in each year was computed and the transition probabilities for the condition data were obtained based on non-linear optimization technique. Next, the emission probabilities for each of the condition parameter factors were derived based on frequency of occurrence method. Subsequently, the future states probability distribution was computed based on the HMM prediction model and viterbi algorithm was applied to find the best optimal path sequence of HI for the respective observable condition. Finally, the predicted and computed HI were compared to the hypothesized distribution. Majority of the predicted HI agrees with computed HI. Predicted HI based on OQAF records the most accurate estimation throughout the sampling years. Inconsistencies are observed in year 2 and between year 7 and 10 for the predicted HI based on FAF. The predicted HI based on DGAF is in line with the computed HI during the first 2 years and deviates at the later stage of the sampling period.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126895527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper aims to use new criteria and approach to predict the occurrence of flashover of (100 * 60 mm) plates of silicon rubber insulator using harmonics component of leakage current. the signal of leakage current of insulator with different pollution levels was measured under different weather conditions. Furthermore, to evaluate the effect of weather variables, various values of water conductivity were used for the experiments. The new criteria (Ki) is ratio of sum of leakage current harmonics value at frequencies 0-100 Hz to sum of leakage current harmonics value at frequencies150-500 Hz have determined. The proposed criteria can be used as wireless diagnostic tools for contamination levels flashover can occurred. Power quality issue known as power quality disturbances can substantially affect high sensitive utilization equipment such the malfunction of sensitive electronic medical equipment and adjustable speed motor drives trip off-line. In this study, wavelet technology with different mother wavelet, decomposition tree and different sampling rate is performed on the input signal in real-time. The instrument also permits the partial implementation of a wavelet decomposition tree. The real signals from Chroma programming are used in LabVIEW® algorithm by Data Acquisition (DAQ) card to acquire and digitize the input line signal to obtain the results. The results obtained in simulation using real signals demonstrate good performance of the instrument developed for the detection and analysis of different power quality disturbances with proper time information of the signal. The classification performance of power disturbances then has been analysed using Support Vector Machine (SVM).","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114076968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The critical impact on the behaviour of power system can be observed during the line outage in a power grid connected with large-scale RER. Therefore, contingency analysis (CA) is crucial to assess such hybrid power grid. This paper proposes a framework based on CA to assess the simultaneous effect of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants integrated with the existing power grid, particularly, in the aspects of implementing effective measuring indices. Simulation studies have been carried out on a practical power system, which was modelled by considering the probability of solar irradiance at different locations in Sarawak. The study presented in this paper can provide an insight to identify the level of insecurity for a large-scale deployment of solar PV systems in Sarawak.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"49 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114127390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reliability and life of the battery power devices depends on state of charge (SOC) and the charging protocol used for charging the battery. In this paper, low frequency ripple current (LFRC) charging of Li-Ion battery using the Zeta bi-directional DC-DC converter is presented. Charging the battery at the optimal frequency with ripple current results in improved charge transfer efficiency, improved charging time and thereby improves the life of the battery. To realize the LFRC charging technique, Zeta bidirectional converter and mathematical model of 48V, 4Ah Li-Ion battery is designed and simulated in MATLAB/ Simulink platform. Moreover, an experimental prototype is developed to validate the LFRC charging technique.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129578049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An effective grounding system requires low resistance path which could be achieved by treating the surrounding soil with grounding enhancement materials to effectively reduce its earth resistance. Such grounding enhancement materials could be chemical or natural based, where only natural enhancement materials are considered in this study. Six grounding system installations with various ratio of Bentonite, Fly Ash and Wood Ash mixtures were installed at School of Graduate Studies, UPM, and were compared to a Reference grounding system which is without any natural enhancement material added to the vicinity of the ground conductor. The main aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of the natural enhancement material mixtures as grounding enhancement materials. Fall-of-potential method with 62% rule and 0° separation angle were employed to measure the grounding system installations’ daily earth resistances for comparison purposes, for 130 days, i.e. from 12th Jan 2018 to 22nd May 2018. The performance of seven grounding system installations considered in this study in the descending order were Bentonite and Wood Ash mixture, 100% Bentonite, 100% Wood Ash, Bentonite and Fly Ash mixture, Fly Ash and Wood Ash mixture, 100% Fly Ash, and Reference grounding systems, with the earth resistance values for the natural enhancement material mixture grounding systems were 20.17%, 20.61%, 24.17%, 25.48%, 28.96%, and 34.78%, respectively from the earth resistance value of the Reference grounding system on day-0. This clearly shown that Fly Ash may not be suitable to be used as natural enhancement material for grounding system installation. While, Wood Ash would be a new natural enhancement material as its performance is comparable to Bentonite, the widely used material.","PeriodicalId":278078,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon)","volume":"627 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125281463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
