Efficiency of ATM in transporting IP packets has been a subject of considerable interest and a much-researched topic-studies in the past include [R. Caceres, July 28 1991], [M. Hassan et al., 2000]. This paper attempts to specifically study the efficiency, with LLC/SNAP (logical link control/sub network attachment point) encapsulation technique being employed for transporting small sized IP packets over the ATM AAL5 (ATM adaptation layer 5). Since ATM chops a variable length PDU into fixed length cells and pads additional bytes to create the 48-byte cells, the transmission efficiency offered by ATM for small length PDU of 0-48 bytes ranges as low from 15% to 40%. This paper summarizes the efficiency for small length IP datagrams of size 8 bytes to 1500 bytes, which was verified using a test setup. Transmission efficiency can be defined as the ratio of number of useful bytes to the total number of bytes actually transmitted on the link.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. A tree structure is used with chain-casting between users, and the users are given an incentive to form many branches. The high-volume users thus form chain-casting trees which are better dispersed over the network than is the case with other content-delivery systems (CDNs) that carries commercial content has to include digital rights management (DRM), authentication, and billing facilities. Chain-casting is unsuitable for these tasks. In this method, a broker provides control of DRM, authentication, and billing. In typical chain-casting, the further an end-branch is from the root, the longer it takes to start viewing the required content. The method includes a function that breaks the content up into short blocks so that end-branch users are able to start viewing the content earlier than they would otherwise be able to-each block also includes redundant packets as a countermeasure for packet loss.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. The architecture is based on a multi-plane crossbar structure with a self-routing switch element. Contrary to conventional crossbar switches, the proposed switch does not need any central controller, complex scheduling schemes, speedup mechanism, or arbiter. The routing mechanism works in each self-routing switch element independently and uses polling handshaking protocol to transfer packets between internal circuits. Therefore, the modular design, high scalability, and asynchronous transfer become possible and easier. The throughput of the proposed switch is analyzed and simulated. Owing to the sub-switch plane mechanism, the throughput of a four plane switch without input port expansion can easily reach 100% simulated in both uniform distribution input traffic and hot spot input traffic model. The architecture has been verified in 100 Mbps Ethernet system with FPGA, and completely simulated in 1 Gb/s (IEEE 802.3z) Ethernet system with FPGA (VirtexII vc2v3000fg676-4, Xilinx Corp.). Because of its simplicity and scalable design, the proposed switch also may be implemented by VLSI technology to meet the 10 Gb/s (IEEE802.3ae) Ethernet switch requirements.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. Parametric modeling is a dominant approach to model speech signals. Within a localized interval, speech representation is equivalent to a noise driven output from an all-pole system that can be estimated using linear prediction. Besides the characteristics of speech, temporal variability of speech signal model is also due to the computation of linear prediction coefficients. Thus, an alternative representation is proposed based on the Gabor coefficients. In this paper, a comparison is made with the linear prediction coefficients to show the consistency of the parameters that are generated for implementation in the speech recognition system.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. The antenna structure is simple. The radiation characteristics of the antenna for various spacing between a probe inside rectangular ring and the dihedral corner reflector are analyzed. The numerical results of the radiation pattern, elevational and azimuthal beam peak in E-plane and H-plane, beamwidth and maximum directivity are substantially investigated. In addition, these characteristics are also compared among the included angles of 30/spl deg/, 45/spl deg/, 60/spl deg/ and 90/spl deg/ of dihedral corner reflector. The result of the analysis is very useful to design the antenna of high directivity with unidirectional beam.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat. On the other hand, advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) have brought about unprecedented convenience and possibilities. Over the past decade, the international community has come to realise the critical role that ICT can play in mitigating the impact of disasters. This recognition resulted in the adoption of the Tampere Convention (Treaty) on \"emergency telecommunications\", which creates an international framework for the provision of telecommunications resources for disaster mitigations and relief operations. The present paper first reviews the role that the international efforts for emergency telecommunications can play in countering and mitigating disasters, thereby providing a safe and secured environment for sustainable ICT development. Finally, the paper will issue a call to arms to both the public and private sectors to join hand in the noble effort of utilising modern ICT for mitigating disasters.","PeriodicalId":277507,"journal":{"name":"9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (IEEE Cat.
