In addition, ephedrine, as well as its isomers and analogues are controlled substances as they are the main precursors of more potent stimulants, i.e. amphetamines. We are presenting a Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) application built for the automated recognition of ephedrines based on their spectra recorded with a portable infrared laser spectrometer operating in the 1405–1150 cm−1. The spectra have been preprocessed with a feature weight wE, which emphasizes the most relevant absorptions. The class identity of each compound was then assigned by using HCA, based on the scores obtained by subjecting the preprocessed spectra to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Despite the narrowness of the spectral window in which the spectra are recorded, the system is very sensitive, as it detects all the controlled ephedrines. The use of classical or Li-ion batteries in the industry, mainly utilized in storage systems, is not a viable solution because these devices, after 2–3 years, lose their ability to store electricity and the materials employed are polluting, even banned in some countries. The European Union regulation like RoHS 1 and RoHS represent sometimes a real bottleneck. Fortunately in the last time on the market more and more are present electronic passive components like supercapacitors. The Supercapacitors (Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors — EDLCs) are the promising solution for the future. They do not contain lead or other polluting materials on a side and on an other side they are able to storage large quantity of electrical charge. EDLCs have a very long lifespan (> 106 unloading cycles) and very small internal resistance, which allows charging and discharging at very high currents (hundreds of A). Also, another advantage of using EDLCs battery systems in power structures is a decrease of the weight of the entire system. We have simulated and analysed the behaviour of a 100F/12V EDLC system by connecting 6 supercapacitors (600F/2.5V) in series. In this context, using an EDLC system, we have obtained interesting results after the primary power source has been disconnected. The proposed model is in the R&D phase, but the test results are promising. Simulation results show, that novel connection between convertors and windings of power transformer assures an advanced spectra of inverter-side winding voltages in comparison with standard interconnection between converters and windings of power transformer in the overmodulation zone. The analyzed installation includes also three strings of solar panels, connected with dc inputs of the corresponding inverters, and outputs of the inverters are connected specifically with the corresponding windings of power transformer. Any damage to the power feed components lead to delays in train traffic. This work proposed a modern computer-based diagnosis method based on diagnosis charts, both created by the authors. Running the hereby proposed software package and following its indications, the failure cause can be quickly identified, implicitly reducing traffic time delays. The software is user friendly, does not affect the traffic security in any way, and does not necessitate a specific, additional training of the maintenance staff. As a main contribution, this work proposes an intelligent algorithm derived from PSO. This algorithm has two main characteristics. The first one consists in the use of an improved version of PSO, namely Hybrid Topology Particle Swarm Optimization (HTPSO). The second characteristic is related to the kind of solved problems. The algorithm is devoted to the optimal control problems, even those who handle bilocal constraints concerning the state variables. In order to prove its efficiency, the HTPSO algorithm was tested on many optimal control problems. A case study is presented in the second part of this paper: the optimal control problem for a DC motor with bilocal constraints. In addition to the initial conditions, there are also final conditions related to the state variables. To this end different textural features are used, particularly second order type (extracted from co-occurrence matrix — Haralick features) and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG). These features are calculated from image patches and the obtained values are considered as input of a convolutional neural network for classification and segmentation. A logical OR operator is used between the decisions of the classifier based on Haralick' features and the classifier based on HOG descriptors. The algorithms are tested and validated on 100 images taken from a UAV mission. The method is using echoes generated by a JAVA platform capable of emulate sound propagation in a controlled 2D virtual environment [2][3]. Echoes originate from the ultrasonic waves generated inside a virtual environment which contains geometrical shape objects. The low complexity method is called RDT (Reaction Diffusion Transform) previously proved efficient in isolated speech recognition problems [4]. The classifier employed in this paper is also a low-complexity one (Fast Support Vector Classifier) previously developed by us in C++ and interfaced with Octave. Results are quite encouraging with 100% accuracy in discriminating circular versus square objects independent on their distance from the ultrasound speaker.
